Sachu Saharu: Tru Helper. A Melodic Analysis Of Christian Music In Garhwal, North India, Laura Eilders
Sachu Saharu: Tru Helper. A Melodic Analysis Of Christian Music In Garhwal, North India, Laura Eilders
Masters Theses
This thesis is an ethnomusicological examination of the development of indigenous worship music in Garhwal; a region in Northern India. It focuses on a comparative aspect so as to draw conclusions regarding the elements of music that is identified as Garhwali. It includes a melodic analysis of Garhwali Christian songs written by Rajesh Dongriyal and songs recorded by young women at two Garhwali villages. The theoretical framework is based upon the need of every group of people to have music about Christ in their own language and style of music. The assumption is that this will serve as a powerful …

The Monacan Nation Pow Wow: Symbol Of Indigenous Survival And Resistance In The Tobacco Row Mountains, Samuel R. Cook, John L. Johns, Karenne Wood
Southern Anthropologist
This article explores the meaning of the Monacan pow wow to those who live in the host community. We contend that this pow wow constitutes a political expression for the Monacan people, a celebration of survival as indigenous people not only in a state where Indian policy took the form of "documentary genocide" (Smith, 1992), but in a county where local power brokers managed to configure a local political economy in which Indians were integrated at the bottom of a virtual caste system. Considered in a community context, this gathering also constitutes a space where the Monacan people can articulate, …

Spirituality In Limbo: An Observation And Analysis Of Mongolia’S Modern Religious Climate, Dustin Saldarriaga
Spirituality In Limbo: An Observation And Analysis Of Mongolia’S Modern Religious Climate, Dustin Saldarriaga
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper is essentially a history of religion in Mongolia with the purpose of illuminating the present state of religion at a socially, culturally, and politically unique point in Mongolia’s history. It has only been fourteen years since Mongolia experienced a political transition from totalitarianism to democracy, and the country now finds itself in a kind of “Limbo” with respect to not only the political state of the nation, but also the spiritual state of its individuals. The result is a religious climate filled with uncertainty and speculation, but also with passion and love. I attempt to explore this current …

Music Education For The 21st Century: Epistemology And Ontology As Bases For Student Aesthetic Education, José Luis Aróstegui, Robert Stake, Helen Simons
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
We seek to understand why persons develop their musical preferences by identifying with a particular cultural group and social background. This identification is greatly shaped by experience in their environment. Resources employed for this identification are mostly different from those employed in schools to foster academic knowledge. ...

Perceptions Of Racial Profiling: Rap Music, Utah, And Police In American Culture, Theresa A. Martinez
Perceptions Of Racial Profiling: Rap Music, Utah, And Police In American Culture, Theresa A. Martinez
Utah Law Review
What about scholars like us who are interested in the methods and the measurement of racial profiling? Will we go to the source itself?. Will we go into the belly of the police department and ask police about their perceptions? Will we go that far? All these steps and more are part of the process of making change. Perhaps we will uncover the hard fact that police perceptions are not so different from those of our white sons and daughters in this nation. But we must look and we must pay close attention; not to do so would be a …

Canons In Harmony, Or Canons In Conflict: A Cultural Perspective On The Curriculum And Pedagogy Of Jazz Improvization, Kenneth E. Prouty
Canons In Harmony, Or Canons In Conflict: A Cultural Perspective On The Curriculum And Pedagogy Of Jazz Improvization, Kenneth E. Prouty
Research & Issues in Music Education
This essay examines how jazz educators construct methods for teaching the art of improvisation in institutionalized jazz studies programs. Unlike previous studies of the processes and philosophies of jazz instruction, I examine such processes from a cultural standpoint, to identify why certain methods might be favored over others. Specifically, jazz education is treated as a fusion of two distinct historical and cultural forces: those of musical academia, and of the jazz community. I argue that methods of teaching improvisation reflect a dual identity, in which these two cultural traditions sometimes exert an uneven influence upon the learning environment. Improvisational curricula, …

Joseph Cooper Walker, Esq. (C. 1761-1810), A Forgotten Irish Bard: A Dissection Of His Advertisement As A Map To His Melodies, Hilary Brady Morris
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
In conducting preliminary research for my undergraduate honors thesis, I discovered a two-volume publication in Mullins Library at the University of Arkansas, The Historical Memoirs of the Irish Bards (1818) by Joseph Cooper Walker, Esq. (c. 1761-1810). It held a variety of information on the music and poetry of ancient Ireland. What interested me most was the collection of melodies at the end of the first volume. Looking at overviews of Irish music collection, I saw little mention of Walker and his Irish Bards. Upon further investigation, I found that the first edition of his book (1786) contained only fifteen …

An Ethnoarchaeomusicological Investigation Of Highland Guatemalan Maya Dance-Plays, Mark Harold Howell
An Ethnoarchaeomusicological Investigation Of Highland Guatemalan Maya Dance-Plays, Mark Harold Howell
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Instrumental music played on two valveless trumpets and a wooden slit-drum currently accompanies the highland Guatemalan Maya dance-play Rab'inal Achi. These two instrument types are known from the Prehispanic record and have been associated with the play since its first mention in the mid-nineteenth century.
The script of the Rab'inal Achi is considered by many scholars to have Prehispanic roots. The possibility that its accompanying music also originated in Precolumbian times is the impetus behind my study. To explore this possibility I apply ethnoarchaeomusicological research methods, incorporating data supplied by iconology-iconography, ethnographic analogy, history, archaeology, and music analysis. Ethnoarchaeomusicological …

A Practical Guide To Twentieth-Century Violin Etudes With Performance And Theoretical Analysis, Aaron Michael Farrell

This document is a partial catalog of what is readily available to violinists for studies relating to twentieth-century repertoire. More studies in this area exist throughout the world, so those presented here are intended merely as a starting point. The document also contains factual information about the studies, as well as performance and theoretical analysis and biographical information about the composers. This information is designed to serve a variety of purposes. The factual and biographical information may be used by the violinist to choose appropriate etudes for himself/herself or a student. Later, the in-depth analysis will assist players throughout the …
"Never Could Read No Road Map": Geographic Perspectives On The Grateful Dead, Daniel R. Culli
"Never Could Read No Road Map": Geographic Perspectives On The Grateful Dead, Daniel R. Culli
LSU Master's Theses
The Grateful Dead hold a unique niche in the musical, social, and cultural history of the United States. However, while the volume of available academic literature concerning the band is increasing, the Grateful Dead remain to be nearly ignored by academia and, to this point apparently, completely ignored by cultural geographers. This paper introduces the Grateful Dead into the field of geography. I analyze the geography of certain aspects of the band, such as its context in San Francisco, the carnival atmosphere of the entire phenomenon, the over 2300 tour dates, as well as the huge catalog of lyrics sung …
