The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Literature pertaining to the “liability of newness” contends that newer firms face particular difficulties and a greater risk of failure. This article seeks to determine if “newness” is also a disadvantage in the acquisition of debt capital. Results indicate that newer firms were significantly less likely to have lines of credit and were also significantly more likely to have been turned down for their most recent loan. Even when we control for length of relationship with the primary financial services provider, personal guarantees, and collateral, younger firms were still more likely to be turned down for loans. Small firms are …

Patient medical errors cause thousands of individual injuries and deaths each year. Factors Impacting E-Government Development, Keng Siau, Y. Long Dec 2004

Factors Impacting E-Government Development, Keng Siau, Y. Long

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

E-government is a way for governments to use new technologies such as the Internet to provide citizens with more convenient access to government information and services, to improve the quality of services, and to provide greater opportunities for citizens to participate in democratic institutions and processes. This research investigates factors impacting e-government development. Based on the growth theory and human capital theory from the economics literature, we hypothesize that information and computer technology, and human development are two factors impacting e-government development. The hypotheses were empirically tested using secondary data from the United Nations and the United Nations Development Programme. …

Building Research Across The Marketing-Psychology-Design Trilogy., Daniela Buchler, Philippa Ashton Nov 2004

Building Research Across The Marketing-Psychology-Design Trilogy., Daniela Buchler, Philippa Ashton

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper seeks to find links between concepts and research methods in Marketing, Psychology and Design using product differentiation as the central theme of the investigation. It focuses on the possibilities of cross–paradigm research and shows linking differentiation and perception is both original and lacking: “although many writers seem to imply that differentiation is based on customer perceptions, the connection between the intentions of the firm, and the subsequent perceptions of the customer is not well explained” (McGovern, 1987:5). Design in this context is the ‘hub’ that, by giving meaning to products, links aspects of marketing and psychology. One study …

Innovation Planning Toolkit., Vijay Kumar Nov 2004

Innovation Planning Toolkit., Vijay Kumar

DRS Biennial Conference Series

To maintain leadership position, companies need to be continuously proactive in exploring new opportunities for innovation. Focusing on core offerings, customer support, and relationship management is a safe way to sustain business and maintain continued revenue flows. But complacency with the successes of core offerings and eagerness to serve the core customer base frequently leads to inaction in the search for new opportunities. Companies deliberately need to be in an active sensing mode during which new opportunities are continuously sought. An active innovation culture needs to evolve within organizations. This should be predominantly characterized by continuous exploration and search for …

Career System Practices: A Pallative Or Strategic Approach To Managerial Internal Labor Market Choices?, Schalon Harrison Newton Nov 2004

Career System Practices: A Pallative Or Strategic Approach To Managerial Internal Labor Market Choices?, Schalon Harrison Newton

Student Scholarship

With departments of human resource (HR) struggling over the past ten years to establish an equal strategic role with operating managers and other functional specialties, there is ongoing debate regarding the strategic alignment and practical impact of human resource management (HRM) practices. A manageable domain for studying the impact of HR in supporting organization strategy is that of formal career system (CS) programs. Investments in CS programs are made with the expectation that there will be a return in the form of internally developed and strategically deployed managerial talent. However, do these systems actually influence internal labor market decisions, such …

Community Coalitions: Understanding Volunteer Dynamics In A Complex System, Carmen Simmons Nov 2004

Community Coalitions: Understanding Volunteer Dynamics In A Complex System, Carmen Simmons

Student Scholarship

In recent years, volunteers and practitioners alike have been drawn to creating and participating in various types of alliances and coalitions as a way to address and solve complex community problems. Community coalitions, in particular, have brought together diverse volunteers and agencies committed to specific community change. In many cases these community coalitions have been highly successful. However, just as often, they have failed to reach their goals and produced messy, unpredictable, and disappointing results. Community coalitions are complex systems populated with volunteers and professionals and their networks. They move these shadow systems forward in unpredictable and sometimes counterproductive ways …

The Wage Effects Of Schooling Under Socialism And In Transition: Evidence From Romania, 1950-2000, Daniela Andrén, John S. Earle, Dana Sapatoru Nov 2004

The Wage Effects Of Schooling Under Socialism And In Transition: Evidence From Romania, 1950-2000, Daniela Andrén, John S. Earle, Dana Sapatoru

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We estimate the impact of schooling on monthly earnings from 1950 to 2000 in Romania. Nearly constant at about 3-4 percent during the socialist period, the coefficient on schooling in a conventional earnings regression rises steadily during the 1990s, reaching 8.5 percent by 2000. Our analysis finds little evidence for either the standard explanations of such an increase in the West (labor supply movements, product demand shifts, technical change) or the transition-specific accounts sometimes offered (wage liberalization, border opening, increased quality of education). But we find some support for institutional and organizational explanations, particularly the high productivity of education in …

Access To Quality Care: Links Between Evidence, Nursing Language, And Informatics, Beth Ann Swan Phd, Crnp, Norma M. Lang Phd, Rn, Faan, Frcn, Anne M. Mcginley Phd, Crnp

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

Despite evidence on nursing’s contribution to the quality of care, much of what nurses “do” remains essentially invisible.

It is vital to recognize the need for a paradigm shift in nursing that utilizes new informatics tools required for optimum use of evidence related to the delivery of quality nursing care.

Embedding nursing language within informatics structures is essential to make the work of nurses visible, and articulate evidence about the quality and value of nursing in the care of patients, groups, and populations.

The Changing Political Economy Of Party Membership, Riccardo Pelizzo Nov 2004

The Changing Political Economy Of Party Membership, Riccardo Pelizzo

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Although few scholars would dispute from an empirical point of view the fact that parties change their electoral strategies, ideological stances and organizational structures over time, there is not much agreement on how these changes, above all party organizational change, have to be understood from a theoretical point of view. This is especially true with regard to the transformations that party organizations have undergone from the early 1970s on. In fact, although party organizational changes in the past three decades have generally been considered to be signs of the so called party crisis, the agreement on this analytical perspective is …

The Rise And Decline Of Structural Remedies, Russell L. Weaver Nov 2004

The Rise And Decline Of Structural Remedies, Russell L. Weaver

San Diego Law Review

One of the most significant remedial developments during the twentieth century was the rise and (partial) decline of the structural injunction in which courts, usually federal courts, restructure or reshape legislative or administrative agencies such as schools or prisons. Structural remedies appear to be inconsistent with the judicial function conceptually. Despite this concern, federal courts have entered structural relief in an extraordinary array of cases that have dramatically reshaped society. This Article examines the structural remedy and offers some reflections on its appropriate use.
