The Concept Of Social Exclusion And Rural Development Policy, F. Dale Parent, Bonnie L. Lewis Dec 2003

The Concept Of Social Exclusion And Rural Development Policy, F. Dale Parent, Bonnie L. Lewis

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Since the early 1970s rural research and public education programs have been intensified in efforts to improve living conditions and strengthen community life in rural America (Southern Perspectives 2000). During much of the 1990s, the nation, including the rural South, experienced a growing economy, a booming stock market, and declining unemployment rates (Gibbs 2001). However, many serious social problems traditionally associated with the rural South remain to this day (Gibbs 2001). This paper introduces the concept of social exclusion, used extensively in European countries and now part of the European Union's official lexicon. Social exclusion is defined as the process …

Faith Based Initiatives And Black Churches: Relationships In A Small City, Said Sewell Iii Dec 2003

Faith Based Initiatives And Black Churches: Relationships In A Small City, Said Sewell Iii

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This exploratory study examined characteristics of black churches in a small southern city that affected the likelihood that such churches would play an active role in faith-based community services. A formal mail survey of church ministers in black Protestant churches in this city was employed. Results were discussed in light of federal policies that promote faith-based initiatives to meet local social service needs. The results indicated that the majority of the black churches in this study were active in addressing local needs through indirect (sermons, lobbying local governments) rather than direct (program development and implementation) means. Among a range of …

New Opportunities For Social Research On Forest Landowners In The South, John Schelhas, Robert Zabawa, Joseph J. Molnar Dec 2003

New Opportunities For Social Research On Forest Landowners In The South, John Schelhas, Robert Zabawa, Joseph J. Molnar

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Many of the issues of importance to forest management and policy have important social components. Yet, in the South, social research on forests has lagged behind economic and biophysical research. In this paper we identify some important new opportunities for social research on forests in the South, focusing on non industrial private forests because they represent the majority of the South's timberland. We identify six important areas for social research. One, research on diversity of forest land owners and how different landowners relate to and use their forests. Two, social relationships of forest landowners, including household and family structure and …

Historical Analysis Of Timber Dependency In Alabama, Glenn R. Howze, Laura J. Robinson, Joni F. Norton Dec 2003

Historical Analysis Of Timber Dependency In Alabama, Glenn R. Howze, Laura J. Robinson, Joni F. Norton

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Almost every part of Alabama is heavily forested and by most standards the forest products industry is the state's leading industry. A significant portion of the total employment and the majority of the manufacturing employment of these counties are in forest product enterprises, criteria used here to define timber dependent counties. This paper will use the historical demographic, economic, and agricultural census data to trace the development of timber dependency in rural counties in Alabama. Understanding the social and land use history is critical in examining timber dependency in Alabama today. Conclusions will be drawn between rural and timber dependent …

Regional Comparisons Of Timber Dependency: The Northwest And The Southeast, Joni F. Norton, Glenn R. Howze, Laura J. Robinson Dec 2003

Regional Comparisons Of Timber Dependency: The Northwest And The Southeast, Joni F. Norton, Glenn R. Howze, Laura J. Robinson

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

We perform a comparison of the timber dependency and socioeconomic characteristics of timber dependent counties for three states in the Northwest region (Idaho, Oregon, and Washington) and three states in the Southeast region (Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi) of the United States. The purpose of this research is to examine whether two forested areas of the United States experience timber dependency in similar ways. This research defines timber dependent counties as those with 20 percent or more of the total employment in forest-based industries. Questions related to forest-based employment patterns and socioeconomic correlates of timber dependency are examined. Tests of difference …

Public Interests In Private Property: Conflicts Over Wood Chip Mills In North Carolina, Sarah T. Warren Dec 2003

Public Interests In Private Property: Conflicts Over Wood Chip Mills In North Carolina, Sarah T. Warren

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The controversy over chip mills in North Carolina is part of a larger public discussion of forest policy throughout the southern Appalachians, Ozarks, and Ouachitas. Chip mills have become a symbol of forest resource exploitation in the southern Appalachians, and many studies and commissions have been established for analysis of the conflict. In this paper I describe the tensions that have arisen between new public views of appropriate property use and more traditional views of natural resource use. Based on the results of a social impact assessment conducted in the summer of 1999 as part of a broader study on …

Piezoresistive Properties Of Ito Strain Sensors Prepared With Controlled Nanoporosity, Otto J. Gregory, Tao You Dec 2003

Piezoresistive Properties Of Ito Strain Sensors Prepared With Controlled Nanoporosity, Otto J. Gregory, Tao You

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A ceramic strain gage based on reactively sputtered indium-tinoxide (ITO) thin films is being developed to monitor the structural integrity of components employed in aerospace propulsion systems operating at temperatures in excess of 1500°C. The hightemperature stability and piezoresistive properties depend to a large extent on the thickness of the active ITO strain elements comprising these ceramic strain gages. Scanning electron microscopy of the thick ITO sensors revealed a partially sintered microstructure consisting of a contiguous network of submicrometer ITO particles with well-defined necks and isolated nanoporosity. It appeared that densification of the ITO particles was retarded during high-temperature exposure …

Prosecuting Martha: Federal Prosecutorial Power And The Need For A Law Of Counts, Michael L. Seigel, Christopher Slobogin Dec 2003

Prosecuting Martha: Federal Prosecutorial Power And The Need For A Law Of Counts, Michael L. Seigel, Christopher Slobogin

UF Law Faculty Publications

Martha Stewart's case illustrates a wide variety of prosecutorial decision-making. We have defended the U.S. Attorney's decision to investigate and prosecute Stewart, but called into question the further decision to charge her with five counts. As a way of curtailing the redundant charging phenomenon, which is widespread, we have suggested that the courts develop a law of counts to cabin prosecutorial charging discretion. Thus, our proposal to create a law of counts would not require prosecutors to act against their short- or long-term interests. Rather, it would be implemented by judges using the interpretive method, without going so far as …

On Analytical Methods And Inferences For 2 X 2 Contingency Table Data Using Wildlife Examples, Richard M. Engeman, George D. Swanson Dec 2003

On Analytical Methods And Inferences For 2 X 2 Contingency Table Data Using Wildlife Examples, Richard M. Engeman, George D. Swanson

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The 2 X 2 contingency table is common analytical method for wildlife studies, but inappropriate analyses and inferences are not uncommon. Issues of concern are presented for selecting the appropriate test for analyzing these data sets. These include the choice of test relative to experimental or sampling design and breadth of intended inferences, the careful statement of hypotheses, and analyses with small sample sizes. Examples from the wildlife literature are used to reinforce the statistical concepts.

Solvent And Primary Deuterium Isotope Effects Show That Lactate Ch And Oh Bond Cleavages Are Concerted In Y254f Flavocytochrome B2, Consistent With A Hydride Transfer Mechanism, Pablo Sobrado, Paul F. Fitzpatrick Dec 2003

Fitzpatrick

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Yeast flavocytochrome b2 catalyzes the oxidation of lactate to pyruvate; because of the wealth of structural and mechanistic information available, this enzyme has served as the model for the family of flavoproteins catalyzing oxidation of α-hydroxy acids. Primary deuterium and solvent isotope effects have now been used to analyze the effects of mutating the active site residue Tyr254 to phenylalanine. Both the Vmax and the V/Klactate values decrease about 40-fold in the mutant enzyme. The primary deuterium isotope effects on the Vmax and the V/K lactate values increase to 5.0, equivalent to the intrinsic isotope effect for the wild-type enzyme. …

Solid-Like Dynamics In Ultrathin Films Of Polymeric Liquids, Gaurav Singh, Ravi F. Saraf, Yves Martin Dec 2003

Solid-Like Dynamics In Ultrathin Films Of Polymeric Liquids, Gaurav Singh, Ravi F. Saraf, Yves Martin

Papers in Nanotechnology

In this letter, we demonstrate that, at mesoscales, nonferroelectric liquid films of polydimethyl siloxane. exhibit significant electrostriction not present in the corresponding bulk state. Remarkably, the observed electrostrictive effect has a response time ,20 ms in contrast to .5 ms recorded in conventional bulk ~ferroelectric polymers. The emergence of this fast electrostrictive strain in thin films is explained in terms of the amalgamation of two contrasting dynamic features—the influence of a highly mobile, viscous layer ~at the air/film interface. on the less-mobile, but fast responding, solid-like layer at the film/substrate interface. The effect is observed for thickness below 200 nm.

Metaphysics H 6 And The Problem Of Unity, Hye-Kyung Kim Dec 2003

Metaphysics H 6 And The Problem Of Unity, Hye-Kyung Kim

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

I argue that H 6 should be taken as Aristotle's clarification on the causelessness in the unity of the parts of definition. In H 6 Aristotle is concerned with a general metaphysical problem affecting - threatening - his theory of substance at two major points. The unity of genus and differentia in the definition of form has to be accounted for without appealing to a unifying cause. If it were not accounted for, form would not be the primary cause of being and thus not primary substance. The unity of the parts of the definition of composite substance also has …
