A Body Of Her Own: Cultural Constructions Of The Female Body In A.S. Byatt's Strange Stories, Sabine Coelsch-Foisner Oct 2003

A Body Of Her Own: Cultural Constructions Of The Female Body In A.S. Byatt's Strange Stories, Sabine Coelsch-Foisner

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Byatt's short fiction, from her first collection Sugar and Other Stories (1987) to Elementals (1998) is marked by a continuous preoccupation with the body: the body as the product of social signifying practices, the body as the site of desires, fears, and anxieties, the body as the source of experience, the body as creator and created. In brief, the body is treated as the centre of existence, consciousness and identity. Yet, these are constantly called into doubt in Byatt's stories, which depict heroines trapped between asserting their identity and submitting to cultural dictates of beauty and behavior. In …

On The Prospect Of “Daubertizing” Judicial Review Of Risk Assessment, Thomas O. Mcgarity Oct 2003

On The Prospect Of “Daubertizing” Judicial Review Of Risk Assessment, Thomas O. Mcgarity

Law and Contemporary Problems

Lawyers for companies subject to federal health, safety and environmental regulation hope that stringent substantive judicial review will relieve their clients of the burdens of much regulation without the need for troublesome legislative battles they seem unable to win. McGarity argues that assigning a Daubert-like (Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals Inc) gatekeeper role to courts engaged in judicial review of agency risk assessments is a profoundly bad idea.

Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll Sep 2003

Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll

Theses and Dissertations

Excavations at a high altitude archaeological site (3350 m) in the eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, uncovered at least three ephemeral brush structures. These temporary timberline dwellings are the highest structures excavated in Utah to date. The periods of occupation range from the early Fremont period to the post-contact era. It is believed that the Fremont occupations are logistical in nature, possibly representing male hunting parties. Logistical camps imply a departure from, and return to, a residential camp. Ethnographic studies show that most residential camps are located within proximity to culinary plants to facilitate collection by women. In the Uinta Mountains, …

Technology, Transformation, And New Operational Concepts, Elihu Zimet, Robert E. Armstrong, Donald C. Daniel, Joseph N. Mait Sep 2003

Technology, Transformation, And New Operational Concepts, Elihu Zimet, Robert E. Armstrong, Donald C. Daniel, Joseph N. Mait

Defense Horizons

Throughout history, technology has been central to warfare, often giving qualitative advantages to numerically inferior forces. Typically, the rate of technology development has been relatively slow and the introduction of new weapons systems even slower, which has allowed evolutionary development of operational concepts. Today’s accelerated pace of technology development no longer allows sequential development of operational concepts. In addition, the current global political environment has placed demands upon the military that range from engaging in major regional conflicts to stabilization, reconstruction and peacekeeping, all creating a continuous need for flexible, adaptive systems and new concepts of operation.

The first purpose …

Market Incentives, Farmers’ Response And A Policy Dilemma: A Case Study On Expansion Of Chat Production As A Cash Crop In The Eastern Ethiopian Highlands.\, Tesfaye Lemma Tefera, Johann Kirsten, Sylvain Perret

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper discusses the reasons for and effects of the dramatic expansion of chat production as a cash crop in the Hararghe Highlands of Ethiopia. Despite the Ministry of Agriculture’s deliberate attempt to marginalize and openly discourage chat production, farmers continue shifting their scarce resources to chat production. Using data generated by a rural livelihood survey from 197 randomly selected households, economic and non-economic factors contributing to the expansion of chat production are identified and its food and nutritional security impact was analyzed. The case study confirms once more again the power of market incentives in encouraging agricultural activity of …

Athletic Trainers' Perceptions Of Competence In Therapeutic Exercise, Christopher J. Jones Jun 2003

Athletic Trainers' Perceptions Of Competence In Therapeutic Exercise, Christopher J. Jones

Masters Theses

As the athletic training profession continues to expand, it is necessary to evaluate the preparedness of the entry-level certified athletic trainer (ATC). The purpose of this research is to determine if entry-level certified athletic trainers perceive that they have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform specific tasks related to therapeutic exercise.

An online questionnaire was sent out to 450 entry-level certified athletic trainers in District Four. A total of 69 subjects returned the survey for a response rate of 15.3%. The questionnaire utilized a Likert-type scale consisting of questions derived in the area of therapeutic exercise of the NATA …

Attributes Of An Exemplary Curriculum In Entry-Level Undergraduate Athletic Training Education, Aric J. Warren Jun 2003

Attributes Of An Exemplary Curriculum In Entry-Level Undergraduate Athletic Training Education, Aric J. Warren

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Athletic training is an allied health profession that is currently undergoing reform of its educational curriculum standards and requirements for education programs. Despite the improvements in the curricula, initial passing rates on the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination are consistently low. The purpose of this study was to examine entry-level undergraduate athletic training curricula accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) to determine what elements constitute an exemplary curriculum and to formulate a model of an exemplary curriculum for others to replicate. It was hypothesized that an exemplary curriculum in entry-level …

Time-Frequency Investigation Of Heart Rate Variability And Cardiovascular System Modeling Of Normal And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Copd) Subjects, Douglas Alan Newandee May 2003

Time-Frequency Investigation Of Heart Rate Variability And Cardiovascular System Modeling Of Normal And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Copd) Subjects, Douglas Alan Newandee

Dissertations

A study has been designed to add insight to some questions that have not been fully investigated in the heart rate variability field and the cardiovascular regulation system in normal and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) subjects. It explores the correlations between heart rate variability and cardiovascular regulation, which interact through complex multiple feedback and control loops. This work examines the coupling between heart rate (HR), respiration (RESP), and blood pressure (BP) via closed-loop system identification techniques in order to noninvasively assess the underlying physiology.

In the first part of the study, the applications of five different bilinear time-frequency representations …

Thermoregulating Ability And Minimum Flight Temperature In Interior Alaska Dragonflies (Odonata: Anisoptera), Todd Sformo May 2003

Thermoregulating Ability And Minimum Flight Temperature In Interior Alaska Dragonflies (Odonata: Anisoptera), Todd Sformo

Biological Sciences

The use of operative environmental temperature (Te) has been a major advance in the study of thermal ecology. I review the use of operative temperature in thermal biology with an emphasis on insects. Then I use data from dragonflies in Interior Alaska (Odonata: Anisoptera) to compare the efficacy of operative and ambient temperature when examining thermoregulating ability. I conclude that although the use of Te may provide more accurate measures of thermoregulation under specific environmental conditions, the use of ambient temperature usually leads to the same conclusions about thermoregulating ability. I next examine the relationships between thermoregulating ability, minimum flight …

Measuring Images: Differences, Quality And Appearance, Garrett M. Johnson May 2003

Measuring Images: Differences, Quality And Appearance, Garrett M. Johnson

Theses

In order to predict the overall perception of image quality it is necessary to first understand and quantify the appearance of images. Just as color appearance modeling evolved from traditional colorimetry and color difference calculations, image appearance modeling evolves from color image difference calculations. A modular framework for the creation of a color image difference metric has been developed and tested using several psychophysical datasets. This framework is based upon traditional CIE color difference equations, and the S-CIELAB spatial extension to the CIELAB color space. The color image difference predictions have been shown to correlate well with experimental data. The …

Paper Session I-A - Learning About Life On Space Station, John J. Uri, Cynthia P. Haven, Gary C. Jahns

Space Congress® Proceedings

The International Space Station as humanity’s outpost in low Earth orbit, is an ideal platform for studying how to live in space, as well as to conduct research to learn more about life. A long-duration microgravity platform such as ISS allows the study of biological and physiological processes free of the one constant force to which they have been subjected since the origin of life on Earth: gravity. Although construction of ISS is still under way, the US Laboratory Module Destiny has been outfitted with its full complement of 10 research facilities, two of them dedicated to life sciences research. …

Character Education: How Does It Affect Student Self-Perception Of Both Character And Achievement In An Integrated Curriculum?, John M. Schembri

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Over the last few decades, change in communities, families, and education has placed an increasing demand on teachers to supplement societal deficiencies at school with hopes of improving the quality of child and adolescent development. In an effort to address this growing need, educators have revamped their traditional teaching styles to meet the educational needs of all students. This has been accomplished by initiating integrated curriculums that create more inviting, student-centered environments that focus on authentic education. The goal is to teach content through real-world scenarios in hopes to supplement valuable life lessons. This study focused on 48 students in …

Iowa Physicians: Legitimacy, Institutions, And The Practice Of Medicine, Part One: Establishing A Professional Identity, 1833-1886, Susan C. Lawrence

Department of History: Faculty Publications

IN JUNE 1850, twenty-five physicians met in Burlington, Iowa, to establish the Iowa Medical and Chirurgical Society. John Sanford, the organizing force behind the new society, had attended the third annual meeting of the American Medical Association in 1849 and had been inspired by the call for physicians to organize state, district, and county associations. Physicians needed to band together not only to improve medical knowledge and practice by giving papers and discussing their experiences among their peers, but also to promote their professional interests through political and social action. The founding members of the Iowa society expressed their anxieties …
