Post-Caldera Eruptions At Okmok Volcano, Umnak Island, Alaska, With Emphasis On Recent Eruptions From Cone A, Delenora M. Grey Dec 2003

Post-Caldera Eruptions At Okmok Volcano, Umnak Island, Alaska, With Emphasis On Recent Eruptions From Cone A, Delenora M. Grey

Geosciences

Okmok volcano has undergone two caldera-forming eruptions, 12,000 and 2050 BP, and has been quite active in historic time. The historic eruptive record has been compiled and augmented with descriptions and photographs of recent eruptions. Eruptions in 1958 and 1997 produced the first post-caldera lava flows to traverse most of the caldera floor. The source of these flows, Cone A, has been constructed largely during the 20th century. Major element analysis of lavas from eight major intracaldera cones reveals two chemically and spatially separate trends, which suggest two separate magma sources beneath the caldera, one feeding an arc of cones …

Structural Controls On Megaporosity In Eogenetic Carbonate Rocks: Tinian, Cnmi, Kevin Wayne Stafford Dec 2003

Structural Controls On Megaporosity In Eogenetic Carbonate Rocks: Tinian, Cnmi, Kevin Wayne Stafford

Theses and Dissertations

Tinian and Aguijan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), are volcanic, back arc islands in the western Pacific formed by Pacific Plate subduction under the Philippine Plate. The islands are composed of Eocene volcanic cores mantled by Plio-Pleistocene carbonate facies and raised Holocene beach and reef deposits. The entire sequence has been tectonically uplifted and contains high-angle normal faults, while isostatic subsidence and scarp failures overprint tectonic brittle failure features. A cave and karst inventory on Tinian and Aguijan surveyed 114 features and is believed to adequately represent the megaporosity (cave) development. Two distinct cave classes were identified: mixing …

Modeling Of Permafrost And Gas Hydrate Stability Zone Within Alaskan Arctic Shelves And Continental Margins, Sergei I. Pokrovsky Aug 2003

Modeling Of Permafrost And Gas Hydrate Stability Zone Within Alaskan Arctic Shelves And Continental Margins, Sergei I. Pokrovsky

Geosciences

A mathematical model was used to determine the behavior of the thermal regime and temperature and pressure conditions due to climate and sea level variations of the gas hydrate stability zone formation at four sites within the Alaskan Arctic Shelf. Two soil types, coarse-grained and fine-grained, and three types of programs were used. The programs were distinguished by whether or not they took unfrozen water and latent heat into account. Simulations suggest the presence of subsea permafrost in a vast area of shelf near Prudhoe Bay. Near Barrow and Lonely subsea permafrost extends up to several tens of kilometers offshore, …

Lateral Magma Transport During The 1912 Eruption Of Novarupta: Insights From Magnetic Imaging, Graham J. Hill Aug 2003

Lateral Magma Transport During The 1912 Eruption Of Novarupta: Insights From Magnetic Imaging, Graham J. Hill

Geosciences

The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes (VTTS), on the Alaska Peninsula, was formed by the cataclysmic eruption of Novarupta (Katmai) in 1912. During the eruption, three magma types were tapped (7-8 km³ of rhyolite, 4.5 km³ of dacite, and 1 km³ of andesite). Contemporaneous collapse of Mount Katmai while Katmai-like andesite and dacite magma joined the eruption at Novarupta provides incontrovertible evidence for magma transport from beneath Mount Katmai caldera to the vent 10 km west at Novarupta (Hildreth and Fierstein, 2000). Shallow storage of the andesite and dacite magmas beneath Mt. Katmai prior to the eruption of 1912 is …

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

This project has drawn together existing research data relating to natural and human impacts on the Abrolhos Islands marine habitats. It has surveyed current uses of these habitats and placed anthropogenic impacts within the context of natural perturbations. Through public forum presentation and debate, this work has allowed real issues, not perceptions, to surface and be addressed properly. This was achieved by defining a strategic programme of research through a scientific workshop process involving all community stakeholders. A two volume Fisheries Research Report (WA) summarizes current knowledge and details the workshop proceedings and strategic research plan.

Automatic Processing Of High-Rate, High-Density Multibeam Echosounder Data, Brian R. Calder, Larry A. Mayer Jun 2003

Automatic Processing Of High-Rate, High-Density Multibeam Echosounder Data, Brian R. Calder, Larry A. Mayer

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Multibeam echosounders (MBES) are currently the best way to determine the bathymetry of large regions of the seabed with high accuracy. They are becoming the standard instrument for hydrographic surveying and are also used in geological studies, mineral exploration and scientific investigation of the earth's crustal deformations and life cycle. The significantly increased data density provided by an MBES has significant advantages in accurately delineating the morphology of the seabed, but comes with the attendant disadvantage of having to handle and process a much greater volume of data. Current data processing approaches typically involve (computer aided) human inspection of all …

The Consolidation Analysis Of A Clay Layer In The City Of Belem Do Para, Brazil, John Bezerra Jr. May 2003

The Consolidation Analysis Of A Clay Layer In The City Of Belem Do Para, Brazil, John Bezerra Jr.

Theses

In this study, an analysis was done on a particular clay layer found in the city of Belem do Para, Brazil. Various soil tests were conducted including a consolidation analysis. Data were gathered and analyzed in order to obtain a better understanding of how the soil responds under certain loading conditions. There have been no previous studies done on this material and so when it has been encountered in the field geotechnical engineers provide the safest, but not necessarily best design method possible. In the case of large buildings, piles are driven past this material to competent sand. There have …

Geologic Studies Of Mercury By The U.S. Geological Survey Jan 2003

Geologic Studies Of Mercury By The U.S. Geological Survey

United States Geological Survey: Publications

A liquid at room temperature, mercury is a unique metal with unusual properties. Elemental mercury has long been used in thermometers because it responds to changes in temperature. In fact, mercury’s many diverse properties have made it useful for many products. Mercury is a good metallic conductor with a low electrical resistivity; it has been used in electrical products including electrical wiring and switches, fluorescent lamps, mercury batteries, and thermostats (Eisler, 1987). Mercury also is used in navigational instruments to measure changes in temperature and pressure. In the medical field, mercury is used as a component in dental fillings and …

Status Of Coral Reefs Of Little Cayman, Grand Cayman And Cayman Brac, British West Indies, In 1999 And 2000 (Part 1: Stony Corals And Algae), Carrie Manfrino, Bernhard Riegl, Jerome L. Hall, Robert Graifman

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

A benthic assessment of the isolated Cayman Islands was completed at 42 sites. Major changes in the reef community structure were documented by comparison with earlier studies. Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis, once abundant as shallow framework builders, were uncommon. Diseased stony corals were seen in >90% of the study sites, with the highest averages in Little Cayman, especially at Bloody Bay which is one of the most highly regulated marine parks in the Cayman Islands. The Montastraea annularis species complex accounted for two-thirds of the diseased corals which, along with other massive species, were affected largely by white-plague …

Faculty Scholarship

Biological habitats and mineral resources in deep-waters should be identified, summarized into a database and their locations mapped. Comprehensive maps of deep-water resources are a prerequisite for managing these areas and their associated resources. In addition, this type of information is useful in mitigating conflicting user-group interests and protecting biodiversity. In the South Atlantic Bight (SAB), biological habitats of importance to deep-water fisheries resources include coral mounds, “live bottom” areas, rock outcroppings, man-made structures, tilefish mud bottom, and possibly mineral deposit areas such as manganese nodules and pavement sites. Congressional mandates, such as the Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) provisions of …

Systematics Of The Western Lyresnake (Trimorphodon Biscutatus) Complex: Implications For North And Middle American Aridland Biogeography, Thomas James Devitt Jan 2003

Systematics Of The Western Lyresnake (Trimorphodon Biscutatus) Complex: Implications For North And Middle American Aridland Biogeography, Thomas James Devitt

LSU Master's Theses

The Western Lyresnake (Trimorphodon biscutatus) is found generally from the desert southwestern United States southward along the pacific lowland versant of Mexico to northwestern Costa Rica. This species exhibits substantial geographic variation in size, squamation, and color pattern across its range, and as such has had an unstable taxonomic history. I investigated populations of T. biscutatus representing currently and formerly recognized forms using both morphological and molecular methods to infer the evolutionary history of this widespread, polytypic taxon. Multivariate statistical analyses (principal components and discriminant analysis) of morphological data (432 specimens, 33 characters) yielded six statistically significantly different groups, consistent …

Analytical Study On Flood Induced Seepage Under River Levees, Senda Ozkan Jan 2003

Analytical Study On Flood Induced Seepage Under River Levees, Senda Ozkan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A common and potentially dangerous phenomenon associated with flooding is seepage under levees and the formation of sand boils. Seepage flow due to hydrostatic head gradients of floods may cause deformation of pervious layers leading to heave, piping and sand boils. Underseepage may also cause irreversible changes in the characteristics of the porous medium. A series of independent flood events may have cumulative effects on pervious layers causing sand boils to grow. Current underseepage analyses for levees are based on steady-state flow. Transient seepage flow due to rapid changes in river head may contribute to cumulative effects and cause critical …

Uncovering Strata: An Investigation Into The Graphic Innovations Of Geologist Henry T. De La Beche, Renee M. Clary

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

An historical investigation into the types of illustrations in the Golden Age of Geology (1788-1840) revealed the nature and progression of graphic representation at the dawning of geology as a science. Exhaustive sampling of geology texts published in the period of focus proceeded until saturation was achieved. Qualitative analysis and evaluation of early illustrations were accomplished with Edward R. Tufte's theory of graphic design. Hypothesis testing around a correlation coefficient revealed significance at the 99% confidence level for relationships between publication year and number of included graphics, and publication year and the graphic density of texts. Henry T. De la …

The Monumental Legacy Of The Antiquities Act Of 1906, Mark Squillace

Publications

The Antiquities Act of 1906 authorizes the President of the United States "to declare by public proclamation, historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interest that are situated upon [federal] lands . . . to be national monuments . . . " The law was passed during the Theodore Roosevelt administration, and Roosevelt quickly set about designating a wide range of lands and resources as national monuments, including notably, the 800,000 acre Grand Canyon National Monument. Roosevelt's expansive interpretation of the law was embraced by later presidents and ultimately by the Supreme Court. In …
