Spirituality And Culture In Higher Education, Larry C. Menyweather-Woods
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)
This session will examine the need for students of color to be active or involved within local Community, both "Faith & Secular." The session will discuss the historical writing of Richard Niebuhr, author of Christ and Culture. who challenged faith groups to discover the role of "faith," [that which now is referenced as "spirituality}, and culture can enhance the maturing process, especially in relationship to Higher Education. The presentations will focus specifically on the role of spirituality and culture relating to students of color in a predominantly Eurocentric environment.
Erasmus And Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion
Erasmus And Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Although Erasmus (1467?-1536) lived in Switzerland for ten years, a longer period of time than in any country except his native Holland, and was, in fact, buried in Basel, scholars have written very little of substance on his lengthy connections with Switzerland and Swiss intellectuals and publishers. This is surprising because links between Erasmus and specific European countries have attracted a great deal of interest from leading Erasmus scholars. In his 1954 book Erasme et l 'Italie, Augustin Renaudet examined the important connections between Erasmus and Italian theologians and philosophers. Not only did Erasmus earn his doctorate in sacred theology …

Was The Chronicler A Spin Doctor?: David In The Books Of Chronicles, Mark A. Throntveit
Was The Chronicler A Spin Doctor?: David In The Books Of Chronicles, Mark A. Throntveit
Faculty Publications
Yes, the Chronicler was a spin doctor—but a necessary one. He used the David story to address the needs of his postexilic community who questioned the value of God’s old promises to David in this new time of Persian domination, without a king, worshiping in a temple that was the mere shadow of Solomon’s glorious edifice.
Preaching The David Story, Rolf A. Jacobson
Preaching The David Story, Rolf A. Jacobson
Faculty Publications
The David story is the longest and most complete biblical treatment of any one human life. This allows the story to speak to many stages of the faith journey. The story is not fully present in the pericopes, but the preacher can choose to use this material in a sermon series to address the spiritual and moral contexts of our age.

The ‘Earth-Dwellers’ And The ‘Heaven-Dwellers’ In Revelation: An Overlooked Interpretive Key, A. Boyd Luter
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
Research and publication on the Book of Revelation has escalated to a frenetic pace. In such a climate, in which, seemingly, every exegetical and theological nuance has been treated from virtually every conceivable angle, it would seem unlikely that any material of significance would be overlooked. However, as will be seen, careful study of two overlooked groups in the Apocalypse, to whom we will refer, shorthand, as the "earth dwellers" and the "heaven dwellers," provides considerable insight in regard to both the exegesis and biblical theology of this challenging book. Further, building from the exegetical/biblical theology conclusions, it is possible …

Big Picture Curricula For Multiethnic Ministry, Tom A. Steffen
Big Picture Curricula For Multiethnic Ministry, Tom A. Steffen
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
This article will propose a storied, big-picture approach to multiethnic ministry. It will advocate curriculum that builds a cathedral rather than isolated rooms. Before considering story-based, big-picture curricula I will first look at how the multiethnic church, and other types of churches, relates to the dominate theological themes of unity and diversity.

"Angels Carrying Savage Weapons:" Uses Of The Bible In Contemporary Horror Films, Mary Ann Beavis
Journal of Religion & Film
As one of the great repositories of supernatural lore in Western culture, it is not surprising that the Bible is often featured in horror films. This paper will attempt to address this oversight by identifying, analyzing and classifying some uses of the Bible in horror films of the past quarter century. Some portrayals of the Bible which emerge from the examination of these films include: (1) the Bible as the divine word of truth with the power to drive away evil and banish fear; (2) the Bible as the source or inspiration of evil, obsession and insanity; (3) the Bible …

The Elusive Search For The Truth: A Book Review Of Peter Gomes's Strength For The Journey: Biblical Wisdom For Daily Living, Devonya N. Havis
The Elusive Search For The Truth: A Book Review Of Peter Gomes's Strength For The Journey: Biblical Wisdom For Daily Living, Devonya N. Havis
Trotter Review
Through his collection of sermons, published in his book Strength for the Journey: Biblical Wisdom for Daily Living (HarperCollins Publishers, 2003), Peter Gomes sets out to evoke a transformation in the reader by offering meditations on questions that often arise when we contemplate how to lead the "good life". He offers biblical wisdom as a practical means in which to achieve happiness. Ultimately however, his solution to life's complexities is abstract and he fails to provide a roadmap with which to negotiate the complexities.

The Old Testament Source Of Rev 21:3c, Helen Cadogan
The Old Testament Source Of Rev 21:3c, Helen Cadogan
Master of Art Theology Thesis
This paper intends an assessment of the textual form of Rev 21:3c as an OT reference; as such it may have something to contribute to the discussion commenced by Menken and continued by Schuchard on deciphering the form of the OT in the NT. Even though other aspects of Revelation study may be vital, the limitations of this research preclude more than the most cursory excursion, if any at all, into the ongoing dialogue on the use of the OT in the NT,language, style, authorship, unity, symbolism, the historical context of Revelation, or whether the author of the Gospel, the …
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Isaiah 56-66, Curtis W. Fitzgerald
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Isaiah 56-66, Curtis W. Fitzgerald
Faculty Dissertations
This study examines the continuity and cohesiveness of the prophecies comprising Isaiah 56-66, or Third Isaiah (TI). The method used is rhetorical criticism, a discipline set forth by James Muilenburg in his address before the Society of Biblical Literature in 1968. Because of the doubts concerning the authenticity of some of the prophecies in TI, and skepticism from some scholars about an overall theme in TI, the need for studies of TI from a rhetorical perspective are warranted. Using the method initiated by Muilenburg and developed by many able scholars in recent years, this limited examination of TI from a …
