Globalization, Broiler Production, And Community Controversy In East Texas, Douglas H. Constance
Globalization, Broiler Production, And Community Controversy In East Texas, Douglas H. Constance
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The poultry industry was the first livestock commodity sector to adopt an industrial organizational model. In recent years the pouItry industry has expanded beyond national boundaries into a globalized system of production. The globalization of agriculture and food is a frequent topic of discussion for researchers interested in rural society. A common focus of these discussions is the consequences of corporate penetration on rural areas and the ways local communities respond to such corporate actions. This paper uses the case of the introduction of large-scale broiler production in East Texas combined with a sociology of agriculture and food conceptual framework …
Lagoons, Litter, And The Law: Cafo Regulation As Social Risk Politics, Larry L. Burmeister
Lagoons, Litter, And The Law: Cafo Regulation As Social Risk Politics, Larry L. Burmeister
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The restructuring of the animal agriculture industry in the United States, a response to globalization dynamics within the world economy, has created a new social risk profile which did not exist in this industry prior to the adoption of factory farm technology. Analysis of the CAFO [concentrated animal feeding operation] regulation debate in Kentucky illustrates the political economy genesis of social risk politics accompanying this new technology. The politics of regulatory efforts to ameliorate such risk, an increasingly frequent occurrence in the risk society era, are examined in a recent attempt to promulgate a CAFO regulatory regime in Kentucky. This …

Natural Fire Regime: A Guide For Sustainable Management Of The Canadian Boreal Forest, Yves Bergeron, Alain Leduc, Brian D. Harvey, Sylvie Gauthier
Natural Fire Regime: A Guide For Sustainable Management Of The Canadian Boreal Forest, Yves Bergeron, Alain Leduc, Brian D. Harvey, Sylvie Gauthier
Aspen Bibliography
The combination of certain features of fire disturbance, notably fire frequency, size and severity, may be used to characterize the disturbance regime in any region of the boreal forest. As some consequences of fire resemble the effects of industrial forest harvesting, conventional forest management is often considered as a disturbance that has effects similar to those of natural disturbances. Although the analogy between forest management and fire disturbance in boreal ecosystems has some merit, it is important to recognise that it also has its limitations. Short fire cycles generally described for boreal ecosystems do not appear to be universal; rather, …

Search For Radiative B,-Hadron Decays In Pp̅ Collisions At √S=1.8 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We have performed a search for radiative b-hadron decays using events produced in pp̅ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV and collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The decays we considered were B̅d0→K*0(→K-π+) γ, B̅s0→φ(→K+K-) γ, Λb0→ Λ(→pπ-) γ, and their charge conjugates. Two independent methods to identify photons from such decays were employed. In the first method, the photon was detected in the electromagnetic calorimeter. In the second method, the photon was identified …
Viscoelasticity From A Microscopic Model Of Dislocation Dynamics, M. Christina Marchetti, Karl Saunders
Viscoelasticity From A Microscopic Model Of Dislocation Dynamics, M. Christina Marchetti, Karl Saunders
Physics
It is shown that the dynamics of a viscoelastic medium can be modeled as that of a two-dimensional crystal with a finite concentration of dislocations, as well as vacancy and interstitial defects. At the longest length scales the viscoelasticity is described by the simplest Maxwell model, whose shear and compressional relaxation times are obtained in terms of microscopic quantities, including the density of free dislocations. At short length scales, t bond orientational order effects become important and lead to wave vector dependent corrections to the relaxation times.

Computer Attacks On Critical National Infrastructure: A Use Of Force Invoking The Right Of Self-Defense, Eric Talbot Jensen
Computer Attacks On Critical National Infrastructure: A Use Of Force Invoking The Right Of Self-Defense, Eric Talbot Jensen
Faculty Scholarship
Computer networks create tremendously increased capabilities but also represent equally increased vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilites are especially acute in relation to potential attacks on critical national infrasturucture. This Article proposes that international law must evolve to recognize that attacks against a nation's critical national infrastructure from any source constitute a use of force. Such attacks, therefore, give the victim state the right to proportional self-defense - including anticipatory self-defense - even if the computer network attack is not an armed attack under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Due to the instantaneous nature of computer network attacks, the right to …
Monetary Policy In Post-Crisis Indonesia: Some Lessons Learned, Reza Anglingkusumo
Monetary Policy In Post-Crisis Indonesia: Some Lessons Learned, Reza Anglingkusumo
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
The base money-targeting framework has shown signs of success in containing the reemergence of inflationary pressures in post crisis Indonesia. We have attributed this initial success to the plausible existence of the monetarist type economic relationships that have lent support to the effectiveness of the framework. Moreover, a clear cut and overriding commitment to maintain monetary stability clearly enhanced the framework’s performance. To further improve the effectiveness of monetary policy in the future, we suggest the use of a full-information strategy in formulating monetary policy such as the one employed by the European Central Bank (ECB).

Security is emerging as a growing concern throughout the distributed computing community. Typical solutions entail specialized infrastructure support for authentication, encryption and access control. Mobile applications executing over ad hoc wireless networks present designers with a rather distinct set of security requirements. A totally open setting and limited resources call for lightweight and highly decentralized security solutions. In this paper we propose an approach that relies on extending an existing coordination middleware for mobility (Lime). The need to continue to offer a very simple model of coordination that assures rapid software development led to limiting extensions solely to password protected …

Carneades' Pithanon And Its Relation To Epoche And Apraxia, Suzanne Obdrzalek
Carneades' Pithanon And Its Relation To Epoche And Apraxia, Suzanne Obdrzalek
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Though the interpretation of ancient texts is notoriously difficult, Cameades presents what one might call a worst-case scenario. In the first place, he wrote nothing. His faithful disciple Clitomachus, attempting to play Plato to Cameades' Socrates, reportedly recorded Cameades' teachings in four hundred books. Not one remains. However, Clitomachus' attempt to make a philosophy of Cameades' anti-theoretical stance was not a complete failure; Cameades had a tremendous influence on the later Academy as well as the Stoa, and his views (or lack thereof) have been handed down to us by both Sextus Empiricus and Cicero. These sources are, nonetheless, problematic. …
