An Investigation Of The Interest For A Nurse Re-Entry Program In Southeastern Ohio, Marsha K. Rodgers Dec 2002

An Investigation Of The Interest For A Nurse Re-Entry Program In Southeastern Ohio, Marsha K. Rodgers

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In the United States and throughout the world there is a serious concern in the growing nursing shortage. Many recruitment and retention techniques are currently being used to ease the nursing shortage. One such avenue is a nurse re-entry program. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the interest for a RN re-entry program in southeastern Ohio.

The data collected during the investigation used both qualitative and quantitative research techniques. Information was received through two survey questionnaires and two focus groups. The instruments were designed with the purpose of determining how many registered nurses were not working in …

Globalization, Broiler Production, And Community Controversy In East Texas, Douglas H. Constance Dec 2002

Globalization, Broiler Production, And Community Controversy In East Texas, Douglas H. Constance

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The poultry industry was the first livestock commodity sector to adopt an industrial organizational model. In recent years the pouItry industry has expanded beyond national boundaries into a globalized system of production. The globalization of agriculture and food is a frequent topic of discussion for researchers interested in rural society. A common focus of these discussions is the consequences of corporate penetration on rural areas and the ways local communities respond to such corporate actions. This paper uses the case of the introduction of large-scale broiler production in East Texas combined with a sociology of agriculture and food conceptual framework …

Passing The Cluck, Dodging Pullets: Corporate Power, Environmental Responsibility, And The Contract Poultry Grower, Joseph J. Molnar, Thomas Hoban, Gail Brant Dec 2002

Passing The Cluck, Dodging Pullets: Corporate Power, Environmental Responsibility, And The Contract Poultry Grower, Joseph J. Molnar, Thomas Hoban, Gail Brant

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Broiler production is concentrated in a few southem states where farmers are highly dependent on contract arrangements for income and livelihood. Poultry is the first animal industry to industrialize and its model of contract farming has been emulated by other animal industries. Environmental standards are becoming increasingly stringent and many farmers are faced with crossroad decisions about investments in dead bird and manure disposal facilities. Asymmetrical power relationships shift waste management responsibilities to growers in a number of ways. This paper details maneuvers poultry integrators use to avoid environmental risk and transfer it to their contract growers. Corporations "pass the …

Lagoons, Litter, And The Law: Cafo Regulation As Social Risk Politics, Larry L. Burmeister Dec 2002

Lagoons, Litter, And The Law: Cafo Regulation As Social Risk Politics, Larry L. Burmeister

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The restructuring of the animal agriculture industry in the United States, a response to globalization dynamics within the world economy, has created a new social risk profile which did not exist in this industry prior to the adoption of factory farm technology. Analysis of the CAFO [concentrated animal feeding operation] regulation debate in Kentucky illustrates the political economy genesis of social risk politics accompanying this new technology. The politics of regulatory efforts to ameliorate such risk, an increasingly frequent occurrence in the risk society era, are examined in a recent attempt to promulgate a CAFO regulatory regime in Kentucky. This …

Display Medium Using Emitting Particles Dispersed In A Transparent Host, Michael Bass, Hans Jennsen Dec 2002

Display Medium Using Emitting Particles Dispersed In A Transparent Host, Michael Bass, Hans Jennsen

UCF Patents

Two and three dimensional color image displays. The displays include a display medium having a substantially uniform dispersion of red, green and blue visible light emitting particles sized between approximately 0.5 to approximately 50 microns therethrough. The particles can be dye doped polymethylmethacrylate(pmma) plastic, and the display medium can be pmma, acrylic plastic or glass. Other particles can be used such as rare earth doped crystals. The two dimensional display uses three laser sources each having different wavelengths that direct light beams to each of three different types of particle in the display medium. Light is absorbed by the particles …

Viscoelasticity From A Microscopic Model Of Dislocation Dynamics, M. Christina Marchetti, Karl Saunders Dec 2002

Viscoelasticity From A Microscopic Model Of Dislocation Dynamics, M. Christina Marchetti, Karl Saunders

Physics

It is shown that the dynamics of a viscoelastic medium can be modeled as that of a two-dimensional crystal with a finite concentration of dislocations, as well as vacancy and interstitial defects. At the longest length scales the viscoelasticity is described by the simplest Maxwell model, whose shear and compressional relaxation times are obtained in terms of microscopic quantities, including the density of free dislocations. At short length scales, t bond orientational order effects become important and lead to wave vector dependent corrections to the relaxation times.

Loading Microcolumns For The Separation Of Analytes From A Sample In The Millisecond Time Scale, David S. Hage, William A. Clarke Dec 2002

Loading Microcolumns For The Separation Of Analytes From A Sample In The Millisecond Time Scale, David S. Hage, William A. Clarke

David Hage Publications

The present invention generally relates to a microcolumn capable of separating an analyte from a sample in the millisecond time domain. The microcolumn is capable of such rapid separation by employing small column volumes that can tolerate medium to high flow rates. The invention also relates to a method of loading a microcolumn capable of separating an analyte from a sample in the millisecond time domain using plural injections of the packing material.

Computer Attacks On Critical National Infrastructure: A Use Of Force Invoking The Right Of Self-Defense, Eric Talbot Jensen Dec 2002

Computer Attacks On Critical National Infrastructure: A Use Of Force Invoking The Right Of Self-Defense, Eric Talbot Jensen

Faculty Scholarship

Computer networks create tremendously increased capabilities but also represent equally increased vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilites are especially acute in relation to potential attacks on critical national infrasturucture. This Article proposes that international law must evolve to recognize that attacks against a nation's critical national infrastructure from any source constitute a use of force. Such attacks, therefore, give the victim state the right to proportional self-defense - including anticipatory self-defense - even if the computer network attack is not an armed attack under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Due to the instantaneous nature of computer network attacks, the right to …

Geometric Improvement Of Trace Network Road with Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System. Together with a great development in road network at such district, it must be followed by changing information that should be suited to the condition at present. For supporting the information changes, the remote sensing technology could be applied. It is one of technology with a great increment and needed to various applications. The application of remote sensing technology is close related to spatial field which is used to be achieved from non digital because of limitation facilities and other obstacle. However with remote sensing technology, those …
