The Loss And Persistence Of Black-Owned Farms And Farmland: A Review Of The Research Literature And Its Implications, Jess Gilbert, Gwen Sharp, M. Sindy Felin
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This paper reviews 115 articles and books published since 1971 that comprise almost all of the scholarly research on black farmers and land loss. It provides a general overview as well as discussion of the benefits of landownership for the black community. Several causes of black land and farm loss are reviewed: forced sales due to "heir property," lack of access to government programs, and continuing racial discrimination by lenders and government agencies. A number of the works cited provide possible ways to slow the loss of black-owned land, including strategies to increase the profitability of individual farms and increased …

From Social Work To Human Services, David Stoesz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social work has forfeited its professional mandate and should be replaced by "human services." In three traditional areas of responsibility-child welfare, public welfare, and mental health-social work has failed to meet its societal obligation. Meanwhile the profession has used postmodern thought to justify a focus on internal constituency groups. A template for professional education in human services is proposed.

Industrial Activity In Cleveland, Robert Sadowski, Ziona Austrian

This report has four primary objectives. First, survey industrial activity in the city of Cleveland using employment and payroll data for the period from 1993 to 2000; report on key findings related to industry sectors and industries at the two-digit standard industrial classification (SIC) code level; and compare the city of Cleveland to suburban Cuyahoga County and the remainder of the Cleveland primary metropolitan statistical area (PMSA). Second, identify those industries in Cleveland that reported substantial employment levels, average annual wages, employment growth, and wage growth during the study period (high performing industries).
