Long Chain Fatty Acids And Pc12 Cell Death, Joel E. Ulloth
Long Chain Fatty Acids And Pc12 Cell Death, Joel E. Ulloth
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Hypoxic-ischemic and traumatic injury to the central nervous system (CNS) are major sources of morbidity and mortality. The broad goal of this dissertation research is to gain a better understanding of the cascade of injury events that follow hypoxic-ischemic and traumatic injury and how they may contribute to the cell death. To accomplish this goal, one of the major secondary events common to both traumatic and hypoxic-ischemic injury was investigated: the prolonged hydrolysis of membrane phospholipid with the release of massive quantities of free (non-esterified) fatty acid (FFA). The central hypothesis of this dissertation research is that elevated levels of …

In particular, the Article explores the ways in which those insights can help illuminate the deep structure of human legal systems. That effort is termed "biolegal history."
Multifractal Analysis Of Memory Usage Patterns, Jonathan Browning Crowell
Multifractal Analysis Of Memory Usage Patterns, Jonathan Browning Crowell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The discovery of fractal phenomenon in computer-related areas such as network traffic flow leads to the hypothesis that many computer resources display fractal characteristics. The goal of this study is to apply fractal analysis to computer memory usage patterns. We devise methods for calculating the Holder exponent of a time series and calculating the fractal dimension of a plot of a time series. These methods are then applied to memory-related data collected from a Unix server. We find that our methods for calculating the Holder exponent of a time series yield results that are independently confirmed through calculation of the …

A Study Of Muscle Activation In A Mathematical Model Of The Human Head And Neck, Janet Brelin-Fornari, A. Arabyan
Crash Safety Center Publications
A model of the human head and neck that incorporates active and passive muscles is utilized in the analysis of non-impact loading in high “g” environments. The active muscles have the capability to be activated partially and in different combinations. The model is implemented in MADYMO using lumped parameters and Hill muscles. A comparison of simulation results with experimental data, generated by the Naval Biodynamics Laboratory (NBDL) for neck flexion and rebound, shows excellent agreement for a 15g impulsive load.

The Natural Role Of Mathematics In The Sciences: How Maharishi's Vedic Science Answers The Question Of The Unreasonable Effectiveness Of Mathematics In The Sciences, Catherine A. Gorini
Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal
Mathematicians and scientists have for a long time tried to understand why mathematics, a subjective creation of the human intellect, is so effective in the sciences, which study the objective, physical world. Satisfactory reasons have not been found because there has not been a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the subjective and the objective aspects of life. In this paper we will see that Maharishi’s Vedic Science, by explaining the link between the subjective realm where mathematics is located and the objective world that science examines, can resolve this problem in a natural way.
Going To Nowhere : Narratives Of Patagonian Exploration, Mark W. Bell
Going To Nowhere : Narratives Of Patagonian Exploration, Mark W. Bell
Master's Theses
Since its discovery on Magellan's circumnavigation, Patagonia has been treated differently than any other region in the world. Effectively, Patagonia has been left empty or vacated by the North. But this emptiness and blankness have compulsively attracted curious travel writers who have filled the emptiness of Patagonia with self-reflexive projections. From Charles Darwin and W.H. Hudson to Bruce Chatwin and Paul Theroux, Northern commentators have found in Patagonia a landscape that accommodates their desire for self-reflexivity and self-consciousness. Thus, Patagonia has been simultaneously filled and evacuated by the Northern mind. As a result, Patagonia has become increasingly about the self …
Dr. Darwin Meet The Great Physician, Alan L. Gillen
Dr. Darwin Meet The Great Physician, Alan L. Gillen
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Darwinists have repeatedly used the terms “constrained” and “failing” physiology to describe our heart and blood vessels. After all, the leading cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Therefore, by Darwinian reasoning, the anatomical and physiological design of the circulatory system must be bad, and evolution in its randomness has given us a “raw” deal. This position is stated by Nesse and Williams (1995, p. 5), “Bones, physiology, the nervous system — the body has thousands of consummate designs that elicit our wonder and admiration. By contrast, however, many aspects …

Variations In The Histamine Content Of Mink Testes Due To Injections Of Gonadotrophic Hormones And Application Of Free Radicals In Vitro, Grant I. Wilson
Biology
It was hypothesized that gonadotropic hormones and oxygen-derived free radicals affect histamine production in the testes. Luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin, a combination of these three hormones, or saline (controls) were injected for either 4 or 7 days into seven wild-type (demi) and seven dark male mink per group. All mink were euthanized with carbon monoxide. Their testes were removed and frozen on dry ice. The histamine content was analyzed using radioimmunoassay. The control wild-type mink injected for either 4 or 7 days had histamine values of 8.15 μg/g and 7.56 μg/g, respectively. In wild-type mink, there was no …

Food And Drug Law Summer Internship Program: Issues In Food And Drug Law, Melinda Michelle Moss
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In recent years, the main food regulatory agency, the Food and Drug Administration, has faced a number of diverse and complicated issues. The impact of these issues has resonated throughout the entire food community. The coarse of action that regulators decide to take in coming years will change how the nation relates to food. Regulators and industry leaders must deal with the increased amount of responsibility they hold, the changing face of food products, contention between industry and consumers, and administrative shortcomings. Both the Food and Drug Administration and industry leaders are working to maintain the high level of food …

Increasing Attendance At Voluntary Academic Tutoring Sessions On A Large University, Meghan Sadler
Honors Theses
High attrition rates have become an impetus for colleges and universities to develop programs to help students during the first years of their education. Various services such as supplemental instruction, tutoring, testing, counseling, college success seminars, and remedial help are offered to help students be successful in their university studies. While these services may be offered, encouraging students to voluntarily attend these sessions is a problem. This study was conducted to analyze the effect of prompts on improving the attendance at voluntary content tutoring sessions at a large Midwestern University. The participants were college students enrolled in any course that …

Assimilation Concerns Of Immigrant High School Students To The United States, Michelle Jeannette Garcia
Assimilation Concerns Of Immigrant High School Students To The United States, Michelle Jeannette Garcia
Student Work
This dissertation examined the difficulties in assimilation faced by immigrant students in our nation's public schools. One paradigm through which these difficulties might be viewed is the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance was defined as the psychological discomfort aroused by dissonant cognitions experienced by an individual. A review of the literature substantiated the fact that immigrant students are bombarded by dissonant cognitions every day in American schools as they adapt to their new lives here. Some resolve the psychological stress caused by these dissonant cognitions better than others.
