Justified By Faith And Judged By Works: A Biblical Paradox And Its Significance, Mark Seifrid
Justified By Faith And Judged By Works: A Biblical Paradox And Its Significance, Mark Seifrid
Other Faculty Scholarship
Within the space of two short chapters in Romans, Paul declares, “It is not the hearers of the Law who are righteous before God, rather those who do the Law shall be justified” (Rom 2:13); and, “According to our evaluation, a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the Law” (Rom 3:28).

Decretal Theology And The Development Of Covenant Thought: An Assessment Of Cornelis Graafland's Thesis With A Particular View To Federal Architects William Ames And Johannes Cocceius, Jan Van Vliet
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
In this essay we first offer some general comments about Cornelis Graafland's work, leading up to and including his gloss on the covenant/predestinarian thought of key representatives of the Puritan tradition. Then comes a brief exposition of the views of John Calvin and William Ames on the relationship of these two heads of doctrine, followed by a more detailed examination of the unique theology of Johannes Cocceius. We assess the earlier (1957) groundbreaking work of Charles S. McCoy and the more contemporary (1988, 1997) scholarly investigation of Willem Jan van Asselt in order to determine whether these scholars perceive the …

Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler
Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The near-death phenomenon has initiated a new debate over Jesus' and Paul's claim in the New Testament that the gospel message therein outlines the only way to salvation. Despite twenty-five years of writing and research by near-death (NDE) advocates the dispute continues not only over the disparity between the gospel and NOE but over the origin and meaning of the near-death experience itself. Initially it was medical and pharmacological questions that focused the discussions. More advanced theories are being offered suggesting that the right temporal lobe of the brain acts as a "circuit board" or gateway for a range of …
Principles, Practices, And Problems-The Pastoral Theology Of St. John Chrysostom, Jack Ferguson
Principles, Practices, And Problems-The Pastoral Theology Of St. John Chrysostom, Jack Ferguson
Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers
The importance of this limited outline of the life of St. John Chrysostom is that it highlights the pastoral periods of his work within the context of the two metropolitan communities which he served. It also locates within these periods several of his major works which yield, upon examination, a wealth of material as well as many points of comparison concerning the rudiments of his pastoral theology.
The Considerations Of Interpretation Through The Function Of Imagery In The Song Of Songs And Its Application To The Current Believing Community, Sanggeol Lyu
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Song of Songs parallels with the synthetic method of literary criticism. This criticism places value on the text because it is literature for the believing community to maximize the celebration of delight and consummation of love within marriage and it deemphasizes the search for the hidden meaning beyond the text. Literary criticism demonstrates not only the function of the literary message but also the aesthetic effect, and is suitable and adaptable to explain and help determine the identity of today's young adults. The study focuses on the wisdom of others and how it is adapted for today. It also …

God's Power For The Believer, Andre Snavely
God's Power For The Believer, Andre Snavely
Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers
So the questions that will be examined in this paper include the following. Does God manifest His power in any way other than salvation, either through miracles to bring people to salvation or to bless those who are already saved? What is the purpose of God showing His power? What is the connection between God's power and faith and between His power and His righteousness? And finally, how does a biblical theology of God's power give an answer to those who demythologize His power into a social program? These and other questions are very much on the minds of Christians …

On The Resurrection Appearances Of Jesus, Gary R. Habermas
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
In this essay I will evaluate Evan Fales's approach to the resurrection appearances of Jesus. His strategy is creative and lively, employing a considerably different approach from that of most contemporary scholars, hence its provocative nature.

Strategies For Successful Establishment And Development Of Schools For Missionary Kids On The Mission Field, Unkil Jung
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this project is to investigate and find solutions to the educational needs of missionary children. Many of MK schools are being forced to close, yet the need for a good education still exists for missionary families on the field. How to provide a good education for these missionary children has become a major problem.
This study is motivated by the writer's personal experience as the founder and director of Bangkok International Academic School (BIAS). The information for this thesis was gathered through the writer's personal visits and interviews with other educators in Christian schools in several countries. …

The Remnant Church, Randall Otto
The Remnant Church, Randall Otto
Journal for Christian Theological Research
The invisible church idea is an apologetic device developed by the Reformers to comply with the creeds’ statements concerning a “catholic church” and is based on a conception of individual election that itself may need revision. The Reformed doctrine of an invisible church has no basis in the OT or NT, for in both it is those who unite and persevere in faithful obedience with God through his mediator in the covenant community who are saved. The invisible church should thus be replaced with remnant church, for the remnant is the ecclesiola in ecclesia which public demonstrates election in saving …

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway
Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway
Libraries
The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
In an effort to understand the mental health needs and resources of Korean Christians, we collected quantitative and qualitative data through surveys and interviews with Korean pastors and Christian educators. Several mental health concerns were identified: the high level of daily stress faced by many Koreans, marriage and family concerns, conflicts between Korean culture and the teachings of the church, and a tendency to keep emotional discomfort suppressed. Mental health resources include deep spiritual commitment to a life of prayer, high levels of commitment to family and community, cultural values of persistence and patience, and reliance on Christian communities for …

Dialogue On The Practice Of Law And Spiritual Values, James F. Henry, Joseph Allegretti, Robert A. Baruch Bush, Dr. Sarah Cobb
Dialogue On The Practice Of Law And Spiritual Values, James F. Henry, Joseph Allegretti, Robert A. Baruch Bush, Dr. Sarah Cobb
Fordham Urban Law Journal
This dialogue focuses on the relationship between religious/moral values and the various methods employed to resolve legal conflicts, with a primary focus on alternative dispute resolution techniques. General topics touched on include the intangible benefits of ADR (such as better relationships, transformative potential, and the effectiveness of apology) and new moral/ethical problems involved with practicing ADR. Joseph Allegretti explores two questions: (1) why Christianity provides a theoretical justification for ADR, and (2) what a Christian approach to ADR might look like. In an essay exploring the Jewish perspective on ADR, Robert Baruch Bush analyzes the Talmud's explicit preference for judges …
