Hard-Working Words, Chris Cole

Word Ways

There are about two million words in the English language and exactly twenty-six letters in the English alphabet. Therefore, the average English word should be less than five letters long, since there are over eleven million words that can be spelled with five letters. However, in fact the average length of an English word is around twelve letters.

An Interactive, Graphical Typeface Identification System, Charles Iii Myers

Theses

Most, if not all, published type identification books suffer from serious drawbacks which make them difficult to use by both typographic novices and professionals. Few effective computerized programs exist to simplify the identification of typefaces. The purpose of this project is to create an effective, visually attractive, interactive and easy-to-use model of a type identification system, which, if successful, will be fully developed. This is accomplished by combining the graphics and interactivity of the World Wide Web with the database management capabilities of modern database products. The user is given a series of "questions" regarding readily observable structural characteristics of …

Two thousand years after the writing of Psalm 139, Andreas Vesalius (Figure 1) began to unlock the mysteries of the human body. When Vesalius was born in Brussels in 1514, no one could have foreseen that anatomy would be changed forever. During Vesalius’ time, the teachings of the Greek physician Claudius Galen (130-201 A. D.) were the ultimate authority on anatomy. Because Galen had dissected very few (if any) human cadavers, his anatomical descriptions were limited to animal dissections. Galen’s works contained many errors because his conclusions regarding human body functions were based on data obtained from nonhuman animals. Vesalius …

Validation Of Passive Air Sampling Monitors Onboard United States Navy Submarines, Larry A. Mcfarland Jul 2000

Validation Of Passive Air Sampling Monitors Onboard United States Navy Submarines, Larry A. Mcfarland

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

An operating submarine creates a unique air quality mixture of compounds that result from a combination of human metabolism, construction materials, materials brought onboard and compounds created through the interaction of ship systems. A comprehensive study of submarine atmospheres is ongoing during deployments of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. As part of the overall effort, a paired air sampling comparison field validation was conducted to compare the air sampling effectiveness of passive diffusive monitors compared to more traditional active air sampling methods when sampling for acrolein, formaldehyde and ozone in the enclosed submarine atmosphere. Acrolein monitors containing 2-hydroxymethylpiperidine (HMP) impregnated glass …

Countering The Global Landmine Epidemic Through Basic Scientific Research, Mark S. Rountree, Robert M. Harris Jun 2000

Countering The Global Landmine Epidemic Through Basic Scientific Research, Mark S. Rountree, Robert M. Harris

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Since their first use during the U.S. Civil War (Croll 1998), blast landmines have played a role in almost every armed conflict from the World Wars to the most recent limited skirmishes. Landmines are the epitome of the consummate soldier: always ready, never tiring. Mines are simple devices that can be fabricated with little effort and from readily available materials. In Sri Lanka, numerous news releases covering the conflict mention a "Johnny mine" (Botsford 1997), which is a local term for an improvised explosive device. Manufactured mines can be inexpensive, costing as little as two dollars apiece. If mine laying …

Physio-informatics is a new systems model for linking human physiologic systems to information systems in the most general way. Physio-informatics is used here to denote a systems based, physiologically robust reference architecture for designing and refining interactive human-computer interface systems in ways that increase operational throughput of information. In this dissertation, a systems model for interactive human-computer interface systems is developed. This model is a physiologically based reference architecture for designing and developing interactive human computer interface systems to match the human nervous system’s ability to transduce, transmit, and render to consciousness the necessary information to interact intelligently with information. …

Investigation Of The Baroreflex Of The Rat : Steady State And Dynamic Features, Xiaorui Tang May 2000

Investigation Of The Baroreflex Of The Rat : Steady State And Dynamic Features, Xiaorui Tang

Dissertations

The baroreflex is one of the most important feedback systems in the body to maintain blood pressure variation within the homeostatic range. In this dissertation, the important features of the carotid and aortic baroreflexes have been extensively investigated on ventilated, central nervous system intact, neuromuscular blocked (NMB) rats using different control system and signal processing tools. Studies have demonstrated that sinoaortic denervation (SAD) caused substantial increases in the blood pressure variability. Comparing the pre- and post-SAD blood pressure spectra, there was a significant increase of power in the very low frequency region (0.00195 -0.2 Hz), and a significant decrease of …

Faculty Publications and Presentations

We wrote The Human Body: An Intelligent Design (Gillen et al. 1999) to help readers understand physiological principles in the human body from a creation perspective. The majority of biology and physiology textbooks bring an evolutionary perspective. Very few books and articles discuss a creation perspective on human anatomy and physiology.

I (ALG) have now written a second book (Gillen, 2000) entitled Body by Design: The Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, that emphasizes historical and anatomical evidences for a creationbased science of the human body. Both books have been written to fill this gap in the literature on …

Fighting Aids With Holistic Weapons: An Integrated Approach, Tom Goodwin Apr 2000

Fighting Aids With Holistic Weapons: An Integrated Approach, Tom Goodwin

Honors Theses

The current AIDS epidemic has changed the way we view the world as well as our society as a whole. Diseases have ravaged humanity since the dawn of time, so what makes AIDS so much different from every other disease encountered by man? One reason is its transmission method. We know that HIV passes from person to person via blood, semen, and vaginal secretions. Most people that suffer from this disease contract it during sex, during intravenous drug use, or during a blood transfusion. Early accounts of HIV disease occurred in minority groups, namely homosexual men. This may have bee …

A Pharmacokinetic Study Of The Effects Of Stress On Chemical Exposure, Sierra H. Suhajda Mar 2000

A Pharmacokinetic Study Of The Effects Of Stress On Chemical Exposure, Sierra H. Suhajda

Theses and Dissertations

Following the Gulf War there were many concerns raised about human exposure to the combination of chemicals and stress. Stress causes several changes in basic functions of a human body, from breathing and blood flow changes to hormonal and enzyme changes, and increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier. Each of these changes can strongly influence chemical uptake, distribution, and accumulation in the body. The purpose of this thesis was to model and predict the changes that will occur when stress is combined with chemical exposure. Physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling is one tool that can be used to visualize, predict, and …

Improving Uav Handling Qualities Using Time Delay Compensation, Andrew J. Thurling Mar 2000

Improving Uav Handling Qualities Using Time Delay Compensation, Andrew J. Thurling

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated control loop time delay and its effect on UAV handling qualities. Compensation techniques to improve handling qualities in the presence of varying amounts of time delay were developed and analyzed. One technique was selected and successfully flight-tested on a UAV. Flight-testing occurred at a constant flight condition with varying levels of additional time delay introduced into the control loop. Research pilots performed a pitch tracking task and gave Cooper-Harper ratings and comments. Tracking errors were used as a quantitative measure of Pilot/Display/UAV system performance. Predictive pitch compensation was found to significantly reduce pilot workload and improve Cooper-Harper …

The Use Of Animals In Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, & Recommendations, Jonathan Balcombe Jan 2000

The Use Of Animals In Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, & Recommendations, Jonathan Balcombe

eBooks

Despite recent advances in technology and increasing societal concern for animals, animals continue to be exploited and killed in large numbers so that students can learn about their structure and function. Dissection may not be without its merits from an educational standpoint, if well implemented, but it appears from student surveys that it usually is not. When one considers the associated costs—animal suffering and death in the supply trade, disruption of wild animal populations, messages that tend to undermine rather than reinforce respect for life and concern for others, rising costs of animal carcasses (as compared with alternatives with longer …

Predictors Of Academic Success In The University Of North Dakota Master Of Physical Therapy Program, Sherry Sisneros Jan 2000

Predictors Of Academic Success In The University Of North Dakota Master Of Physical Therapy Program, Sherry Sisneros

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Due to the fact that the number of positions available in the University of North Dakota's Physical Therapy program is few yet the number of qualified applicants is many, the admissions committee has the responsibility to be selective in their process to ensure the most qualified students are admitted. In order to determine the most qualified students, one needs to determine the possible variables that predict not only academic, but clinical success as well.

Data was gathered from 145 students who attended the UND-PT program with admit years of1991-1995. Traditional descriptive and analytical statistics were utilized to describe applicants, outcomes, …
