Fisheries Research Report No. 123 - Review Of Productivity Levels Of Western Australian Coastal And Estuarine Waters For Mariculture Planning Purposes, Alan Pearce, Stuart Helleren, Mark Marinelli, Fisheries Western Australia Dec 2000

Fisheries Research Report No. 123 - Review Of Productivity Levels Of Western Australian Coastal And Estuarine Waters For Mariculture Planning Purposes, Alan Pearce, Stuart Helleren, Mark Marinelli, Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Research Reports

The measurement of chlorophyll-a (a simple estimate of phytoplankton biomass) is often used as an indicator of water quality. Chlorophyll measurements are relatively sparse for most of the Western Australian continental shelf, although there are areas such as the Perth metropolitan coastal zone, Wilson Inlet and the Albany harbours where some intensive studies have been undertaken.

This review of both published and unpublished chlorophyll concentrations in Western Australian waters has shown a high degree of variability in space (both horizontally and vertically) and time, and statistics on the seasonal distribution of chlorophyll have been derived for those regions with sufficient …

Environment, Cultures, And Social Change On The Great Plains: A History Of Crow Creek Tribal School, Robert W. Galler Jr. Dec 2000

Environment, Cultures, And Social Change On The Great Plains: A History Of Crow Creek Tribal School, Robert W. Galler Jr.

Dissertations

This study explores the socio-cultural history of a school for Native American students on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in central South Dakota. The case study places the school's history (1886-present) within the context of the historic interaction between environment, cultures, and social change on the Great Plains.

This work focuses on a Catholic school and the multi-dimensional students and staff who constitute its story. These individuals acted neither as perpetually passive students nor simplistically sinister administrators. Instead, this dissertation broadly explores the challenging nature of intercultural relations that led to the founding of the school and how tribal/Catholic interactions …

Religion And U.S. Culture, James L. Heft Dec 2000

Religion And U.S. Culture, James L. Heft

Journal of Catholic Education

After reviewing the history of the interplay between religion and culture in the U.S., this article explores important facets of contemporary American society that color the experience and meaning of religious faith. Among these are excessive individualism, a heightened awareness of the need for personal integrity, and the desire for personal religious experience. While religion is often treated as a “classroom pariah” at universities, the author argues that there are numerous possibilities for a more full integration of religion into university life and overall American culture.

The Effects Of Colonization On The Career Development And Occupational Choices Of African Students Studying In The United States, Augustine E. Bessong Dec 2000

The Effects Of Colonization On The Career Development And Occupational Choices Of African Students Studying In The United States, Augustine E. Bessong

Dissertations

A quantitative research design was utilized to understand the perceptions of the effects of colonization on career choices and occupational development of Africans in the United States. In face-to-face, 60-90 minute interviews using a semistructured interview guide developed by the researcher, participants were asked open-ended questions about the effects of colonization on their career choices and occupational development. Using purposeful sampling, 12 African male and female students, 7 enrolled at one Southeastern university and S from a large metropolitan city in the Southeastern United States, were interviewed for data collection.

Interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed. Transcripts were analyzed using the …

Comparative Literature And The Culture Of The Context, Jan Walsh Hokenson Dec 2000

Comparative Literature And The Culture Of The Context, Jan Walsh Hokenson

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Comparative Literature and the Culture of the Context," Jan Walsh Hokenson poses a series of interrogatives around the question of what, as comparatists, we have learned about "literature in the context of the culture it represents" (Mario J. Valdés). She argues that in theoretical terms, culture has become the new vessel for the old wine of sources and influences, and that global intercultural contexts will change the analytical categories for comparatists in the coming millennium. In Hokenson's opinion, if comparative literature is to survive it must regain the panoptic view, and if it is to thrive as …

Theory, Period Styles, And Comparative Literature As Discipline, Slobodan Sucur Dec 2000

Theory, Period Styles, And Comparative Literature As Discipline, Slobodan Sucur

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Theory, Period Styles, and Comparative Literature as Discipline," Slobodan Sucur attempts to answer the following question: Can a rapprochement be brought about between various, often antagonistic, literary-theoretical views and the concept of comparative literature itself, which requires accord, consensus, agreement, etc., for it to function as a concrete body and discipline? Sucur attempts dealing with this question in three parts of the paper: First, he establishes a relationship/link between the theoretical discord of today (humanism, formalism, deconstruction, etc.) and the high theorizing which began during the Jena-Berlin phase of Romanticism (Shelling, Hegel, F. Schlegel, etc.); secondly, he …

Ryanodine Receptor Adaptation, Michael Fill, A. Zahradníková, Carlos A. Villalba-Galea, I. Zahradník, A. L. Escobar, S. Györke

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

In the heart, depolarization during the action potential activates voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels that mediate a small, localized Ca2+ influx (ICa). This small Ca2+ signal activates specialized Ca2+ release channels, the ryanodine receptors (RyRs), in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). This process is called Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR). Intuitively, the CICR process should be self-regenerating because the Ca2+ released from the SR should feedback and activate further SR Ca2+ release. However, the CICR process is precisely controlled in the heart and, consequently, some sort of negative control mechanism(s) must exist to …

Review Of Cutting Into The Meatpacking Line: Workers And Change In The Rural Midwest By Deborah Fink, Philip Garcia Oct 2000

Review Of Cutting Into The Meatpacking Line: Workers And Change In The Rural Midwest By Deborah Fink, Philip Garcia

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This self-proclaimed anthropological and historical study about Midwest wage earners confronts many contemporary issues about the workplace in its 201 pages of text and photographs. Globalization, plant closings, deregulation, immigrant workers, repetitive motion disorders, sexual harassment, and employee drug testing are just some of the topics covered. The author gathered first-hand data during five months of employment at a large pork processing plant outside Des Moines, Iowa; she augmented her observations with extant information on Iowa's rural economy for the twentieth century, especially tabulations from the US Census and reports from local newspapers.

The book's main interest is the effect …

Review Of En Aquel Entonces: Readings In Mexican-American History Edited By Manuel G. Gonzales And Cynthia M. Gonzales, Jorge Iber Oct 2000

Review Of En Aquel Entonces: Readings In Mexican-American History Edited By Manuel G. Gonzales And Cynthia M. Gonzales, Jorge Iber

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In their introduction editors Manuel G. and Cynthia M. Gonzales claim their task is to examine the diversity and complexity of "Chicano history" from the sixteenth through the twenty-first centuries. This is an ambitious undertaking, and they acknowledge that "the story is too varied and complex to be incorporated under a single rubric" (xi). Still, the effort is certainly worthwhile and in this case fairly effective.

The sheer volume of chronologically arranged articles (thirty-one) is impressive, as is the roster of contributors. Topics such as Tejano life in Texas, land grant adjudication, labor unrest in California, beet workers on the …

Josiah Quincy's 1844 Visit With Joseph Smith, Jed L. Woodworth Oct 2000

Josiah Quincy's 1844 Visit With Joseph Smith, Jed L. Woodworth

BYU Studies

A prophet's claims have always invited attention. The Prophet Joseph Smith took calls from an array of personalities who would not be satisfied without seeing this curiosity in the flesh. The visitors came from near and far and from every walk and station of life: politicians and priests, paupers and pundits, charlatans and seekers, and almost everything in between. Arriving first in a trickle and then in a stream, they found the Prophet wherever he had gathered the Saints. Some of the travelers left accounts of their visits, and from these sketches later generations came to know Joseph, too.

“The History Of Us”: Social Science, History, And The Relations Of Family In Canada, Cynthia Comacchio Oct 2000

“The History Of Us”: Social Science, History, And The Relations Of Family In Canada, Cynthia Comacchio

History Faculty Publications

This essay provides a selective overview of the Canadian historiography on family. The roots of family history not only extend backwards much further than the “new social history,” bom of the tumultuous 1960s, they are buried deep in several other disciplines, most notably sociology, anthropology, and demography, whose practitioners were concerned as much with the historical process of family change as with the state of families contemporary to their times. I consider how pioneering social scientists, by grappling with the family's relationship to structural change, historicized early 20th century family studies and offered up many of the questions, concepts, theories, …
