College Graduates In The Nonmetropolitan South: Origins And Prospects, Robert M. Gibbs
College Graduates In The Nonmetropolitan South: Origins And Prospects, Robert M. Gibbs
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study documents the regional origins of the college-experienced population in the nonmetro South, using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 Cohort. As of 1994, the nonmetro South had generated over half of its own college-experienced adults between the ages of 30-38, a higher rate than that of any other region. Although the results of logistic regression estimates show that nonmetro southerners were less likely to attend college, those who left the region for college were more likely to return than other regional migrants, especially after age 30. In addition, the relatively low demand for college-trained labor in the …

Migration In The Nonmetropolitan South, Mark Nord, John Cromartie
Migration In The Nonmetropolitan South, Mark Nord, John Cromartie
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Data from multiple sources are analyzed to provide a picture of domestic migration patterns, characteristics of migrants, and effects of migration on poverty and human capital in the rural South during the 1990s. Migration trends in the 1990s were quite favorable for the rural South. Net migration was positive and substantial and represented a gain of people in their early career years including a disproportionate share of young families. The "brain drain" that characterized the 1980s has at least slowed, and possibly stopped. The comparative advantage of rural areas is increasingly found in their natural amenities and low population densities …

Numerical Simulation Of The Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer Flow Over The Cape Canaveral Region And Gulf Stream Using Avhrr Sst – An Atmospheric Seabreeze Model, Charles R. Bostater, Manuel Gimond, Erik Uhlhorn, Ted Mcnally
Numerical Simulation Of The Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer Flow Over The Cape Canaveral Region And Gulf Stream Using Avhrr Sst – An Atmospheric Seabreeze Model, Charles R. Bostater, Manuel Gimond, Erik Uhlhorn, Ted Mcnally
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
An atmospheric mesoscale numerical model has been developed and applied to the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) in the vicinity of sharp sea-surface temperature (SST) gradients. The Gulf Stream offshore ofEast Central Florida near Cape Canaveral is the region of interest. The model equations which govern atmospheric behavior are based on the basic conservation laws ofmass, momentum, and energy. A "primitive" equation formulation is used to produce preliminary predictions ofhorizontal velocity, potential temperature, and water vapor. The hydrostatic approximation is applied to the vertical momentum conservation equation and the anelastic form ofthe continuity equation is used to approximate mass conservation. …

Looking To The Future ... Distance Education Issues In Nebraska, Nn21 Distance Education/Outreach Action Team
Nebraska Network 21: Publications
The Nebraska Network 21 (NN21) Action Team on Distance Education/Outreach has studied a variety of issues related to distance education in order to better serve the people of Nebraska. Distance education has grown rapidly in Nebraska, but is clearly in its infancy. Many important issues still are being identified and are far from understood. The possibilities of distance education are yet to be fully realized. But in a state with a small, spread-out population such as ours -- perhaps in any state -- it would seem that distance education holds great promise for making many forms of education accessible to …

A workshop was held September 27 through 29, 1999, to address issues relating to national trends in mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular diseases; the apparent slowing of declines in mortality from cardiovascular diseases; levels and trends in risk factors for cardiovascular diseases; disparities in cardiovascular diseases by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geography; trends in cardiovascular disease preventive and treatment services; and strategies for efforts to reduce cardiovascular diseases overall and to reduce disparities among subpopulations. The conference concluded that coronary heart disease mortality is still declining in the United States as a whole, although perhaps at a slower rate than …

Competency-Based Education: Teaching And Assessing Oral Communication In Fairbanks, Alaska High Schools, Diane Blair Barnett
Competency-Based Education: Teaching And Assessing Oral Communication In Fairbanks, Alaska High Schools, Diane Blair Barnett
Communication
Nationwide developments in the area of educational standards and accountability have produced a movement toward competency-based education in which teachers are increasingly tasked with facilitating the competencies within these developing standards. As a result, professionals in the Communication discipline have an opportunity to apply their knowledge of effective communication practices to provide benefits for students and teachers. The first phase of this study examined State and local educational standards in areas of speaking, listening, and group communication. Local and State standards identified as most closely aligned with standards developed by Communication professionals served as the basis for developing a questionnaire …
A Qualitative Study Of The Women And Children's Residential Treatment Center Substance Abuse Treatment Program, Phillip Elwyn Gilbert
A Qualitative Study Of The Women And Children's Residential Treatment Center Substance Abuse Treatment Program, Phillip Elwyn Gilbert
Psychology
This thesis presents the results of a formative process evaluation of the Fairbanks Native Association Women and Children's Residential Treatment Center abuse program using interviews, participant observation, and grounded theory methods of qualitative research. Eight clients and eight staff were interviewed across the domains of culture, spirituality and family. A theory of program operation emanated from and was grounded in the data: program functioning was significantly affected by the relationship perceived by the clients to exist between themselves, (their needs, values, desires, goals and world view) and the program's goals and priorities.
The Geography Of Isolation: Nineteenth Century Science, Exploration And The Conception Of The Aleutian Islands, Annette Watson
The Geography Of Isolation: Nineteenth Century Science, Exploration And The Conception Of The Aleutian Islands, Annette Watson
Arctic and Northern Studies
The purpose of this thesis is threefold: first, to follow the early history of Alaska from the point of view of the Aleutian Islands; second, to follow how the history of science intersects with this history. Third, to show how nineteenth century science and scientists conceived of the Aleutians, and how their conceptions translated to public perceptions of landscape. The Aleutian Islands went from being the center of the newly-purchased Alaska in 1867--to an isolated chain of islands stretching beyond the margins of the map. Tracing the progression of this isolation demonstrates how landscape--an amalgamation of physical experience and myth--is …
