Fargo: A Biblical Morality Play, Mary Ann Beavis Oct 2000

Fargo: A Biblical Morality Play, Mary Ann Beavis

Journal of Religion & Film

Although it is ostensibly a secular film in which religion is absent, Joel and Ethan Coen's Fargo (1996) can be interpreted as a Biblical Morality Play. In particular, the development of the Biblical Virtues of Law, Wisdom and Family are personified in the character of the police chief Marge Gunderson, and the corresponding Sins of Lawlessness, Foolishness, Greed and Betrayal of Family are personified by the criminals Carl Showalter, Gaear Grimsrud and Jerry Lundegaard.

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward Sep 2000

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward

Peer Reviewed Articles

Modeling the scheduling of patient appointments is an important issue in simulating a health care delivery facility. A simulation model must include the control logic of appointment scheduling software and the explicit and implicit decision rules used by the human scheduler in selecting an appointment time. Expert systems provide one way of modeling such control logic and decision rules. We describe a structure for an expert system that models patient appointment scheduling and the integration of such an expert system within a simulation model. An example expert system for a small animal veterinary clinic is presented.

The Development Of Family Ministry For The Local Church, Daryl W. Pitts Sep 2000

The Development Of Family Ministry For The Local Church, Daryl W. Pitts

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

All social and cultural indications demonstrate that the American society is in desperate need. Divorce rates and addictions have multiplied both within and without the church. The local church is uniquely positioned to offer hope and healing, from a biblical perspective to those who have been beaten, bruised, and left beside the freeway of the New World Order. The local church also has the ability to provide preventative services so its members can avoid these life hazards. Based on surveys and research, this project presents a strategy to implement a comprehensive professional pastoral Christian counseling service for the local church.

Preaching: A Ministry Of Newness, Gregory A. Smith Aug 2000

Preaching: A Ministry Of Newness, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The message of the New Testament draws heavily on the concepts of newness and renewal. Nearly three dozen New Testament passages discuss “new” things—new wine, new commandment, new creation, new song and new Jerusalem, to name a few. The imagery of newness occurs in narrative, didactic and apocalyptic literature and is used by every New Testament author except James and Jude. Not only does the biblical concept of newness provide a useful paradigm for interpreting New Testament theology, but it also outlines the contours of the task of preaching. Preaching is the proclamation of a new message for the purpose …

Form, narrative and historical criticism are used to perform an exegesis of this passage. In the end, what may be loosely termed a "biblical theology" approach is undertaken to address the theological and pastoral implications of this passage.

Prayer And Church Growth In The Korean Church, Seung Il Kang May 2000

Prayer And Church Growth In The Korean Church, Seung Il Kang

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study contends that prayer is an indispensable element for church growth. Prayer brings spirituality, power and vitality to a church. Prayer is to be done with other elements of church growth. Prayer has a universal and unique character because no growth is possible without prayer even though other elements are performed well.

The two elements for church growth, personal and programs, are discussed in their relationship with prayer. The personal element includes pastors and laymen praying about their specific positions of serving. The program element of prayer provides something like an initial explosion in such programs as worship, evangelism, …

Christianity In Latvia In The Twentieth Century, Liva Fokrote

Seminary Masters Theses

This paper is about Christianity in Latvia in the twentieth century. The country of Latvia is located on the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea in Northeastern Europe. Christianity was brought to this country at the end of the twelfth century. Only in the twentieth century did the Christian Church in Latvia become truly indigenous and diverse.

The Church history in Latvia began with the crusading attempts of German bishops and religious orders that brought Roman Catholicism to Latvia at the end of the twelfth century. The Catholic bishops and religious orders dominated both the ecclesiastical and political life in …

Orthos Logos, Recta Ratio: Pope John Paul Ii, Nihilism, And Postmodern Philosophy, Michael Peters Jan 2000

Orthos Logos, Recta Ratio: Pope John Paul Ii, Nihilism, And Postmodern Philosophy, Michael Peters

Journal for Christian Theological Research

Pope John Paul II's encyclical letter, Fides et Ratio, delivered in Rome at Saint Peter's, on 14 September 1998, is the first encyclical to address the relationship between faith and reason, and other matters philosophical, for over a hundred years. Pope John Paul II suggests that, in the history of philosophy, postmodernism appears as a form of nihilism, resulting from the crisis of rationalism. He argues for a new dialogue between theology and philosophy to recover authentic wisdom and truth. This article reviews and discusses the argument of the letter, briefly sketching the Pope's argument concerning the relationship of the …

The Covenant Theology Of Francis Roberts, Won Taek Lim Jan 2000

The Covenant Theology Of Francis Roberts, Won Taek Lim

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

The object of this study is to show how the covenant theology of Francis Roberts (1609-1675), an English Puritan, stands in the mainline of the Reformed tradition and assists in defining the seventeenth-century development of "covenant" or "federal" theology. In particular Roberts' covenant theology not only reflects the development and refinement of English covenant thought after the Westminster Assembly but also evidences the ongoing dialogue between the English Reformed writers, the Scottish Reformed writers, and the Reformed thinkers in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands. To judge the place of Roberts' covenant theology in relation to Reformed orthodoxy, the present study …
