Relative Abundance Of Postlarval And Juvenile Penaeid Shrimps In Submerged Aquatic Vegetation And Emergent Marsh Habitats, Jeffrey C. Howe, Richard K. Wallace
Gulf of Mexico Science
Postlarval and juvenile densities of Farfantepenaeus aztecus, Farfantepenaeus duorarum, and Litopenaeus setiferus were compared among emergent marsh (Spartina alterniflora), submerged aquatic vegetation (Ruppia maritima), and adjacent unvegetated areas at the east end of Fowl River along Mobile Bay, AL. A total of 108 samples were collected between July 1994 and Nov. 1995, of which 76 samples contained at least one of the three penaeid species. Of the 507 penaeid shrimp collected, 303 (60%) were collected in the R. maritima beds, 152 (30%) in the S. alterniflora, and 52 (10%) in the sand/mud habitat. …

Mammal Research In Southern Africa: Present Patterns And Future Priorities, Johan T. Du Toit, L. S. Broomhall
Mammal Research In Southern Africa: Present Patterns And Future Priorities, Johan T. Du Toit, L. S. Broomhall
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
We conducted a survey to identify present patterns and future priorities for mammal research in southern Africa (countries including and southwards of Angola, Zambia and Tanzania). Two sets of peer-reviewed journals were scanned for papers on southern African mammal research over the period 1988-1998: one set comprised five journals published in South Africa; the other comprised 10 journals published abroad. For the same period we reviewed titles of M.Sc. and Ph.D. dissertations completed in zoology departments of South African universities. A questionaire was administered by e-mail to. 126 researchers active in mammal research in southern Africa, concurrently with a separate …

Modeling And Simulation Of The Dynamic Behavior Of Monoliths: Effects Of Pore Structure From Pore Network Model Analysis And Comparison With Columns Packed With Porous Spherical Particles, Athanasios I. Liapis, J. J. Meyers, Orrin K. Crosser
Crosser
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A mathematical model is presented that could be used to describe the dynamic behavior, scale-up, and design of monoliths involving the adsorption of a solute of interest. The value of the pore diffusivity of the solute in the pores of the skeletons of the monolith is determined in an a priori manner by employing the pore network modeling theory of Meyers and Liapis [J. Chromatogr. A, 827 (1998) 197 and 852 (1999) 3]. The results clearly show that the pore diffusion coefficient, D(mp), of the solute depends on both the pore size distribution and the pore connectivity, n(T), of the …

Toward A Viable Coastal Resource Management Strategy For Liberia : The Formation Of An Autonomous Integrated Coastal Resource Management Commission, Cyrus L. Gray Jr.
World Maritime University Dissertations
Most of Liberia’s population of three million live in the vicinity of its 350 miles long coast and depend to a large extent on the resources and economy associated with the coastal area. There is also a huge potential for earnings from the exploitation of offshore petroleum, something, which has been discovered in Liberian waters but remains unexploited. The level of development in these areas, environmental considerations, regional cooperation and compliance with internationally agreed standards and conventions leaves much to be desired for Liberia. This dissertation is an appraisal of Liberia’s treatment of these important issues, both in legislation and …

Problem Pengembangan Produk Dalam Bank Syariah, Cecep Maskanul Hakim
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Remote Sensing Observations Of Winter Phytoplankton Blooms Southwest Of The Luzon Strait In The South China Sea, Dan-Ling Tang, I-Hsun Ni, Dana R. Kester, Frank E. Muller-Karger
Marine Science Faculty Publications
The Luzon Strait is a channel between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. This area is traditionally classified as an oligotrophic zone with low primary productivity. Even so, high concentrations of pigment were detected 100 km southwest of the Strait through analysis of historical Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) data that the Nimbus-7 satellite collected during the winters of 1979 to 1986. These blooms were observed in December 1979, February 1983, February 1985, and January 1986, when sea surface temperatures measured with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAAs) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) were 23 to …

Structure And Function Analysis Of Lin-14, A Temporal Regulator Of Postembryonic Developmental Events In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Yang Hong, Rosalind C. Lee, Victor Ambros
Dartmouth Scholarship
During postembryonic development of Caenorhabditis elegans, the heterochronic gene lin-14 controls the timing of developmental events in diverse cell types. Three alternativelin-14 transcripts are predicted to encode isoforms of a novel nuclear protein that differ in their amino-terminal domains. In this paper, we report that the alternative amino-terminal domains of LIN-14 are dispensable and that a carboxy-terminal region within exons 9 to 13 is necessary and sufficient for in vivo LIN-14 function. A transgene capable of expressing only one of the three alternativelin-14 gene products rescues a lin-14 null mutation and is developmentally regulated by lin-4. …

Oxidative stress markers as well as high concentrations of copper are found in the vicinity of Aβ amyloid deposits in Alzheimer's disease. The neurotoxicity of Aβ in cell culture has been linked to H2O2generation by an unknown mechanism. We now report that Cu(II) markedly potentiates the neurotoxicity exhibited by Aβ in cell culture. The potentiation of toxicity is greatest for Aβ1–42 > Aβ1–40 ≫ mouse/rat Aβ1–40, corresponding to their relative capacities to reduce Cu(II) to Cu(I), form H2O2 in cell-free assays and to exhibit amyloid pathology. The copper complex of Aβ1–42 has a highly positive formal reduction potential (≈+500–550 mV versus …

The Perspectives Of Care And Justice And Their Influence On Clinician Conceptualization Of Client Anger., Dona Corcoran Zanotti
The Perspectives Of Care And Justice And Their Influence On Clinician Conceptualization Of Client Anger., Dona Corcoran Zanotti
Theses and Dissertations
Anger is a dominant, but under-researched, emotion in our society. Mental health providers devote a considerable portion of their time to helping clients deal with anger. However, neither they nor researchers are able to say what treatment is most efficacious or for whom. Gender, age, and culture are all involved in the experience and expression of anger and how anger manifests itself differently among individuals, and possibly in how anger is interpreted by mental health providers. One way to better understand client anger and clinician's conceptualization of that anger is through the examination of anger narratives. This study examined anger …
Isolation And Identification Of Proteoglycans In Human Glenohumeral Joint Capsule., Susan Jeno
Isolation And Identification Of Proteoglycans In Human Glenohumeral Joint Capsule., Susan Jeno
Theses and Dissertations
Characterization of the biochemical structure of cartilage and tendon has been a focus of research in recent decades, but little is known about joint capsules. Classified as dense irregular connective tissue, the extracellular matrix of joint capsules contains water, collagen, and non-collagenous macromolecules including proteoglycans (PGs), and glycoproteins, but specific biochemical composition of human glenohumeral joint capsule has not been elucidated. Structure and function are intimately related, therefore, understanding the structure of the capsule is essential to analysis of its function. The purpose of this research study was to isolate and characterize the PG content and relative proportion of each …
N-Acetyltransferase Genetic Polymorphisms And Breast Cancer Risk., Anne Carlson Deitz
N-Acetyltransferase Genetic Polymorphisms And Breast Cancer Risk., Anne Carlson Deitz
Theses and Dissertations
Aromatic and heterocyclic amine carcinogens found in cigarette smoke and well done meat require host-mediated metabolic activation before initiating tumors in target organs. The N-acetyltransferase isozymes, NAT1 and NAT2, catalyze the activation (O-acetylation) of aromatic and heterocyclic amines and also the deactivation (N-acetylation) of aromatic amines. Both NAT1 and NAT2 are subject to genetic polymorphisms. Using molecular epidemiological studies, in vitro studies in human mammary tissues, and a genetically defined rapid and slow acetylator congenic hamster model, we tested our hypothesis that rapid NAT1 and/or NAT2 acetylators are at an increased risk of breast cancer, especially those women exposed to …
