“Faculty of color in higher education, in general, face unique challenges simply by their presence, therefore, it is unrealistic to expect that Christian institutions are immune to secular cultural influences.”

To All Nations: An Exegetical Analysis Of The Parables Of The Lord In Luke, James A. Mann
To All Nations: An Exegetical Analysis Of The Parables Of The Lord In Luke, James A. Mann
Faculty Dissertations
This dissertation provides students of the New Testament and missions a biblical foundation for missions as revealed in the Gospel of Luke, and especially that foundation revealed in the parables found in this gospel. The study first examines the Gospel of Luke and the theme of universal missions found within it. Next, the history and theory of parable research and interpretation are examined. From this point the parables of the double and triple traditions are compared and contrasted in order to determine if Luke reveals his theme of universal missions in these parables.
Ultimately, this study focuses on an exegetical …

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Luther was truly a great liturgist. Along with his reform of the Mass, which included his Formula Missae and his Deutsche Messe, he also produced two baptismal rites, an Order of Marriage, an Order for Confession, a German and Latin Litany, and an Ordination Rite. He also contributed commentary on worship in general, wrote several hymns, and produced music. For the purpose of this project we will focus primarily on his reform of the Mass and his selection of hymns.

Stewardship Educational Program Based On The Lukan Pericopes (Pentecost Season - Series C), Glen Borhart
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
This Major Applied Project seeks to enable the members of the congregation to grow in the stewardship of all that the Lord has entrusted to their care. Through regular and ongoing scriptural education the members of the congregation will mature in their faith. As faith grows, Christian stewardship grows. The scope of this Major Applied Project is limited, yet the principles utilized here will serve as a model for any pastor or congregation to better implement a program of year-round stewardship education. By its connection to the weekly Gospel readings, the program addresses the Christian's role as steward in the …

Religion And Mental Health: What Are Virginia Minister's Perceptions Of Counseling And Psychology, Clay E. Peters, Ii
Faculty Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to ascertain which, if any, variables would effect how a minister felt about counseling and psychology, and what impact this may have on the possibility that he or she would refer to secular counselors for those in their congregations who are having difficulties beyond the pastor's expertise. The study investigated this possibility by examining the following variables: age, pastoral experience, educational level, and the amount of psychology class credits that a minister had in training. In addition, it sought to determine what influence a minister's theological belief and his or her denomination had on …

Have We Need Of Invoking Postmodernity? Identity And Difference In Theological Discourse, Jeffrey Bloechl
Have We Need Of Invoking Postmodernity? Identity And Difference In Theological Discourse, Jeffrey Bloechl
Journal for Christian Theological Research
While the term "postmodernity" remains vague or equivocal, theologians increasingly concede that it is one which they can not avoid trying to understand and deal with. One definition of the term proceeds by way of sharp contrast with specific features of modernity, thus clearly distinguishing postmodernity from even late modernity. The key to this distinction seems to be a particular conception of "difference" which is worked out rigorously in Heidegger's, "The Principle of Identity." Proceeding from Heidegger's claim to think difference anterior to identity, postmodernity is then presented here as the source of considerable difficulty to a theology which would …

Chiasmus Bibliography, John W. Welch, Daniel B. Mckinlay
Maxwell Institute Publications
Introduction
John W. Welch
In 1978, my colleagues and I completed our work on Chiasmus in Antiquity, which was published in 1981 by Gerstenberg Verlag in Hildesheim, Germany. That volume contained a bibliography generated mainly by Robert F. Smith. Over the past two decades, I have continued to collect bibliographical information on numerous books and articles that either speak about or make use of chiasmus. Those additional sources have been included here, expanding the earlier bibliography, in an effort to be as comprehensive as possible. These items are presented alphabetically by author, and again in four main categories. Brief annotations …

Friedman, E. H. (1985). Generation to Generation: Family Process in Church and Synagogue. New York: Guilford Press. This is the foundation text for this course. You may find this challenging reading if family systems terms are new to you. Friedman's insights into the processes of family and church are worth the price of the book - especially chapters 8 & 9. Guerin, P.J., Jr., Forgarty, T. F., Fay, L.F., Kautto, J. G. (1996). Working with Relationship Triangles. New York: Guilford Press. Guerin, et al. adds some meat and bones to many of Friedman's principles. I found this book very engaging, …

Perspectives On The Church And Church Growth Theory, Charles Van Engen
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
Because we will be talking about the church and its nature during this conference, I thought it might be good for us to be reminded of some basic characteristics of the church and the various ways the church has seen itself. At the risk of oversimplification, I would like to briefly survey ten broad perspectives on the Church which one may derive from the Church’s history and relate them to Church Growth theory. The ten perspectives mentioned in this paper are in no way meant to be exhaustive of the multiple ways one may view the Church. I do not …

The Deacon: Ministry Through Words Of Faith And Acts Of Love, Benjamin Hartley, Paul E. Van Buren
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
From the moment the 1996 General Conference of The United Methodist Church reordered its ministry and adopted the new Order of Deacon, there has been much speculation on the meaning of the new Order, how it should be developed, and what difference it should make. (Some saw no reason for the new Order or could not grasp the reason for such an Order, and others thought they knew all the answers and have judged the establishment of the deacon on their understandings.)
The Section of Deacons and Diaconal Ministries in the Division of Ordained Ministry has the responsibility of resourcing …
