Interview With Richard Eldridge, W. Desmond, Richard Thomas Eldridge
Interview With Richard Eldridge, W. Desmond, Richard Thomas Eldridge
Philosophy Faculty Works
Desmond: Talking to Richard on the way over, I proposed that our discussion would focus on the theme of autonomy and embeddedness or relatedness. This is a recurrent concern in all of Richard’s writing. I thought it would be a good idea to look at this issue of autonomy and embeddedness in a variety of different forms, in relation to different philosophers that have influenced the work of Richard, but also in a variety of different domains such as ethics, aesthetics or literature, romanticism. Working With Gay And Lesbian Students At Catholic Colleges And Universities: A Student Affairs Perspective, Sandra M. Estanek
Journal of Catholic Education
Controversy often surrounds issues of sexual ethics on campus. This article offers a helpful framework for consideration of one of today’s difficult issues: ministry to gay and lesbian students at Catholic institutions. By demonstrating how one may be faithful to Magisterial teaching, the Gospel command to love, and solid principles of human development and psychology, the author offers concrete steps for establishing and protecting a climate of conversation.

The Way of the Lord Jesus, Vol. 3: Difficult Moral Questions. By Germain Grisez. Franciscan Press (217-228-5670). 927 pages. $35.
Here is a uniquely valuable work, practical and direct, written in plain English by a mature scholar who wears his immense learning lightly. The "difficult moral questions" it treats are two hundred in number, each with an Analysis and a Reply. (And there are two narrative Appendices.)

Journal of Catholic Education
Mutuality is a salient feature of any spirituality that is authentically Catholic. While there are at least four different forms of mutuality, a comprehensive view of its various forms establishes mutuality as a formal moral norm for Christian conduct. As such, mutuality proves to be a vital incarnational principle that can assist Catholic educators in critically evaluating their ministry.

Interreligious Friendship: A New Theological Virtue, James L. Fredericks
Interreligious Friendship: A New Theological Virtue, James L. Fredericks
Theological Studies Faculty Works
Today, in an effort to respond to their religiously pluralistic situation, Christians should recognize friendships with non-Christians as a theological virtue. The first section of this essay reviews some of the recent discussion of virtue theory, noting that virtues are enduring aspects of character that incorporate values and skills, have histories, and often act as correctives to vices. The second section reflects on friendship as a virtue, using Aristotle, Sartre, and Levinas, among others. The third section discusses interreligious friendship in particular as an example of a human excellence, a new virtue that incorporates values and skills and helps Christians …

The religious intellect must recognize that in the nineteenth century it confronts a unique situation, unprecedented both in the depth of its challenge and in the extension of its claims. During that period, the denial of the reality of God rose to achieve an articulate and influential presence within the intellectual culture of western Europe. This denial was no longer the persuasion of this or that idiosyncratic figure such as Diagoras of Melos or Theodore of Cyrene in preChristian antiquity; nor did it constitute the mentality of a peculiarly enlightened cast such as the d'Holbachian circle in Paris in the …
