An Empirical Test Of A Communibiological Model Of Trait Verbal Aggressiveness, Kristin M. Valencic, Michael J. Beatty, Jill E. Rudd, Jean A. Dobos, Alan D. Heisel
An Empirical Test Of A Communibiological Model Of Trait Verbal Aggressiveness, Kristin M. Valencic, Michael J. Beatty, Jill E. Rudd, Jean A. Dobos, Alan D. Heisel
Communication Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to test Beatty and McCroskey's communibiological model of trait verbal aggressiveness. In general, this model views trait verbal aggressiveness as an expression of temperament; specifically, that trait verbal aggressiveness represents low thresholds for the fight or flight (FFS) neurobiological system. This model further contends that behavioral inhibition circuitry (BIS) moderates FFS activation by tempering aggressive impulses, otherwise FFS activation would manifest itself in the form of physical rather than verbal attacks. Beatty and McCroskey (1997) propose that low thresholds for stimulating the behavioral activation system (BAS) should be related to trait verbal aggressiveness to …

Fmri Of Monkey Visual Cortex, Lisa Stefanacci, Paul Reber, Jennifer Costanza, Eric Wong, Richard Buxton, Stuart Zola, Larry R. Squire, Thomas D. Albright
Neurology Collection
While functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is now used widely for demonstrating neural activity-related signals associated with perceptual, motor, and cognitive processes in humans, to date this technique has not been developed for use with nonhuman primates. fMRI in monkeys offers a potentially valuable experimental approach for investigating brain function, which will complement and aid existing techniques such as electrophysiology and the behavioral analysis of the effects of brain lesions. There are, however, a number of significant technical challenges involved in using fMRI with monkeys. Here, we describe the procedures by which we have overcome these challenges to …
The Future Of Electromagnetic Field Litigation, Michael C. Anibogu
The Future Of Electromagnetic Field Litigation, Michael C. Anibogu
Pace Environmental Law Review
This Article explores the dynamics and complexity of the electromagnetic field controversy. Presently, there are many unanswered questions with respect to the effects electromagnetic radiation has on people who live or work near power lines. This Article examines the state of domestic and international scientific evidence that exists regarding the risks of electromagnetic radiation. Ultimately, the Article concludes that although the present state of the legal and scientific field is not conducive to electromagnetic field litigation and plaintiffs will face difficulty in receiving settlement awards, the judicial route is not closed off to them.

Factors Concerning The Conservation Of A Rare Shale Endemic Plant: The Reproductive Ecology And Edaphic Characteristics Of Penstemon Debilis (Scrophulariaceae), Amy L. Mcmullen
Biology
The management of a rare, edaphic endemic plant species requires an understanding of the ecological setting and processes that contribute to its restriction. Included in the ecological processes is a set of biotic characters associated with the reproductive ecology, including its breeding system, pollination vectors, and germination requirements. The geologic and soil setting of the plant must also be characterized in order to understand the plant's restriction to the substrate. These issues were addressed by this study of the rare endemic Penstemon debilis O'Kane and Anderson (Scrophulariaceae). Penstemon debilis consists of six populations that occur on talus slopes of the …

Synthesis Of Novel Amino Acids And 310- And Alpha-Helical Alpha, Alpha-Disubstituted Amino Acid Rich Antimicrobial Peptides, Thomas Scott Yokum
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Amphipathic peptides rich in α, α-disubstituted amino acids (ααAAs) were synthesized and examined for antimicrobial activity and helix preference in various solvent systems. Also, a series of polar, ααAAs were synthesized for incorporation into helical peptides and a red-shifted tryptophan analog was synthesized as a fluorescent probe.
A series of short, amphipathic, 310- and α-helical peptides containing 50 to 80 percent ααAAs was synthesized. Various combinations of 1-aminocyclohexane-lcarboxylic acid, α-aminoisobutyric acid, and 4-aminopiperidine-4-carboxylic acid were incorporated using preformed acid fluorides. In vitro testing revealed that most of these peptides show direct antibacterial activity against E. coli and …
Biological Characterization Of Rev Variation In Equine Infectious Anemia Virus, Michael Belshan, Matthew E. Harris, Anne E. Shoemaker, Thomas J. Hope, Susan Carpenter
Biological Characterization Of Rev Variation In Equine Infectious Anemia Virus, Michael Belshan, Matthew E. Harris, Anne E. Shoemaker, Thomas J. Hope, Susan Carpenter
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Sequence analysis identified significant variation in the second exon of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) rev. Functional analysis indicated that limited amino acid variation in Rev significantly altered the export activity of the protein but did not affect Rev-dependent alternative splicing. EIAV Rev can mediate export through two independent cis -acting Rev-responsive elements (RREs), and differences among Rev variants were more pronounced when both RREs were present. Variation in Rev may be an important mechanism for regulation of virus replication in vivo and may contribute to changes in clinical disease.

Do Smaller Classes Mean Greater Academic Achievement In High School Biology Classes?, Elaine Awalt
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if students in small classes would show greater academic achievement in high school biology classes. The study involved two high school biology classes, one with an enrollment of 20 students, and one with an enrollment of 25 students. Both groups of students were given pretests on the subject of invertebrates. A four week study of this topic followed. Teaching techniques and assignments were identical for the two groups. At the end of the four week study a posttest was given to all students.
The results of the pre and posttest were then …

The Effects Of Tactile/Kinesthetic Instructional Strategies In The Biology Classroom, Janice Batten Sees
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the addition of tactile/kinesthetic instruction to the biology classroom could significantly increase learning. Various kinds of tactile/kinesthetic lessons were taught to three experimental groups who also received visual and auditory instruction. These tactile/kinesthetic lessons included task cards, task puzzles, manipulatives, total body movement, and large floor games. The control group only received visual and auditory instruction. The subjects were 84 College Biology students from Buena Regional High School, a school in rural South Jersey. The classes varied in gender and race. The same instructor taught all classes and the length of …

Developmental And Hormonal Regulation Of The Expression Of Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 Protein Levels In Baboon Placenta, Kathleen Elizabeth Dunstan
Developmental And Hormonal Regulation Of The Expression Of Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 Protein Levels In Baboon Placenta, Kathleen Elizabeth Dunstan
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Cytosolic phospholipase A2 ( cPLA2) specifically catalyzes the release of arachidonate from membrane phospholipids, thus initiating synthesis of prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and other eicosanoids. The human and nonhuman primate placenta actively synthesize high levels of eicosanoids which play both an autocrine and paracrine role in placental function. Previous studies in Dr. Miriam D. Rosenthal's laboratory have shown that cPLA2 mRNA levels are developmentally regulated. The present study was designed to determine whether placental cPLA2 protein levels increased during gestation. Since the marked increases in estrogen levels during normal pregnancy have been shown to enhance morphological and …
