Proposal For An Effective Legal Framework To Protect The Marine Environment From Pollution : The Case Of Plastic Garbage Pollution In The Coastal Waters Of Tanzania, Farida Idrisa
World Maritime University Dissertations
There is an increasing amount of man-made debris that litterthe world's oceans and coastal waters, and associated problems which this brings. This debris consists mostly of persistent materials such as plastics, metal. glass and rubber. This dissertation provides an insight into problems and threats associated with plastic garbage. 'Apart from its persistence in the environment, plastics float for years and are concentrated into specific location by ocean currents causing permanent and irreversible damage to the marine ecosystem. Thus, sources and impacts of plastics into the marine environment are discussed. The increase in population. industrialisation. urbanisation and the rising standards of …

Sensitivity Of Spruce/Moss Boreal Forest Carbon Balance To Seasonal Anomalies In Weather, Steve Frolking
Sensitivity Of Spruce/Moss Boreal Forest Carbon Balance To Seasonal Anomalies In Weather, Steve Frolking
Earth Sciences
A process-oriented, daily time step model of a spruce/moss boreal ecosystem simulated 1994 and 1995 productivity for a Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study site near Thompson, Manitoba. Simulated black spruce net primary productivity (NPP) was 139 g C m−2 in 1994 and 112 in 1995; feathermoss NPP was 13.0 g C m−2 in 1994 and 9.7 in 1995; decomposition was 126 g C m−2 in 1994 and 130 in 1995; net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was an uptake of 26.3 g C m−2 in 1994 and 2.5 in 1995. A very dry period for the first half of the …

Attention Deficit Disorder : A Multimodal Treatment For A Multifaceted Disorder, Sara F. Freeman
Attention Deficit Disorder : A Multimodal Treatment For A Multifaceted Disorder, Sara F. Freeman
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) afflicts many children, as well as adults, and can be damaging to a child's well being. As a result, physicians and researchers have invested a great deal of time in investigation [of] the reasons so many children suffer from the disorder. Additionally, searching for a cure has consumed much time and effort. While this goal has not yet been accomplished, researchers have made great advances towards alleviating the symptoms of the disorder. Recently, research has focused on multimodal therapy as an option. Consequently, the child with ADD has several treatments, or combination of treatments, from which …

Intracellular Lipid-Binding Proteins And Their Genes, David A. Bernlohr, Melanie A. Simpson, Ann Vogel Hertzel, Leonard J. Banaszak
Intracellular Lipid-Binding Proteins And Their Genes, David A. Bernlohr, Melanie A. Simpson, Ann Vogel Hertzel, Leonard J. Banaszak
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Intracellular lipid-binding proteins are a family of low-molecularweight single-chain polypeptides that form 1:1 complexes with fatty acids, retinoids, or other hydrophobic ligands. These proteins are products of a large multigene family of unlinked loci distributed throughout the genome. Each lipid-binding protein exhibits a distinctive pattern of tissue distribution. Transcriptional control, regulated by a combination of peroxisome proliferator activated receptors and CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins, allows for a variety of both cell and tissue-specific expression patterns. In some cells, fatty acids increase the expression of the lipid-binding protein genes. Fatty acids, or their metabolites, are activators of the peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor family of …

Future Of International Markets – Beef Cattle, Norman L. Dalsted
Range Beef Cow Symposium
As cattle producers are slowly working their way through the downturn in the current "infamous" cattle cycle what will the next century bring. At the turn of the last century the cattle industry was in its infancy relative to the position it currently holds in the U.S. agricultural sector. Some experts often refer to the cattle business as a mature, well established entity indicating that cattle producers, processors, and packers represent an established, stable component of the agricultural sector. However, the dynamics of this industry are anything but stable to the individual cattle producer. Thus, as we enter the 21st …
