Solid Waste Management And The Need For Effective Public Participation, Catherine A. Solheim, Charles E. Faupel, Conner Bailey

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Recent changes in technical requirements for landfill design, mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, have led to closing the majority of solid waste landfills in the United States. Efforts to site new landfills have elicited widespread opposition. Based on eight case studies in Alabama, we identify three themes behind this opposition: threats to quality of life, potentially harmful economic impacts, and frustration over representational issues in the process involved in selecting the proposed solid waste facility. These concerns mirror much of the literature on public opposition to landfills and other facilities which pose similar threats to the environment and …

The dissertation is a study of how differences in communication due to culture affect maritime safety on board vessels with multicultural crews and of how differences in cultural communication effect the multicultural maritime class. It analyzes some of the difficulties of cross cultural communications at sea and also presents questionnaire results regarding communication differences that affect the multicultural crew. Suggestions for improving cross cultural communication on board were identified. Cross cultural communication problems in the classroom are identified and discussed with approaches to deal successfully with problems identified. This paper proposes a code reuse mechanism called module embedding that enables the building of new modules from existing ones through inheritance, overriding of procedures, and overriding of types; the paper also describes an implementation scheme for this mechanism. Module embedding is beneficial when modules and classes are used in combination and need to be extended together, or when modules are more appropriate medium than classes.

A flotation method and apparatus for separating a selected constituent from an effluent of an industrial process is provided. The apparatus includes a conditioning tank and a flotation cell. The conditioning tank allows mixing a flotation reagent with an effluent and includes a mechanism for also dissolving gas in the effluent within the conditioning tank. The flotation cell includes a dissolved gas flotation chamber having an overflow for recovering the selected constituent and a tailings drain. The purpose of this survey was to determine if graduates believed that the counseling services they received at Belleville Area College contributed to their academic success . A survey was conducted utilizing 181 graduates (111 females and 70 males) from a May 1996 graduate class of 696 students . Academic success is defined as the completion of a degree . Reasons for seeking counseling were broken into two time frames consisting of new students and students who were nearing completion of their degree.
