The Effects Of Developing A Master Planned Community In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Daniel S. Martinez
The Effects Of Developing A Master Planned Community In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Daniel S. Martinez
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Master-planned communities have become a valuable tool in the reshaping of suburban landscapes. The effects of implementing a well-determined master plan are evidenced by successful ventures in the United States and abroad. This study determines what effect the development of a master-planned community will have on urban planning and housing demand in Greater Metropolitan Buenos Aires, Argentina. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are used to arrive at specific conclusions. The subject property area (SPA), the competitive market area (CMA), and the Greater Metropolitan Buenos Aires (GMBA) region, are analyzed to provide the basis of analytical research for this study. …

RAIN began in October 1974 as a publication of ECO-NET, an environmental education network funded by the Hill Foundation and an Environmental Education grant. Its office was based in the Environmental Education Center at Portland State University. With a focus on the Pacific Northwest, particularly Oregon, RAIN originally described itself as a “bulletin board” with an “emphasis on environmental/energy related and communications kinds of information” and interested in “the evolutionary possibilities of inter-disciplinary connections.”

A Comparative Analysis Of Viable Solar Thermal Technologies For Solar Field Development And Commercialization, Sean M. Crawford
A Comparative Analysis Of Viable Solar Thermal Technologies For Solar Field Development And Commercialization, Sean M. Crawford
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Diminishing fossil fuels and concerns about the quality of the environment has lead the recent drive to establish a commercialized solar field in Southern Nevada. The competing solar thermal technologies for the Solar Enterprise Zone (SEZ) are Parabolic Dish-Stirling, Central Receiver Power Towers, and Parabolic Trough Systems. It is important to compare the technologies based on the guidelines set by the Corporation for Solar Technology and Renewable Resources. The variables weighted are solar conversion performances, initial capital investment, operation and maintenance costs, water and land use, and electricity production costs. All technologies have been proven to viable power sources and …
Environmental Mediation: An Assessment And Case Study Of The Logan Canyon Highway Controversy, Jared Glenn Parkinson
Environmental Mediation: An Assessment And Case Study Of The Logan Canyon Highway Controversy, Jared Glenn Parkinson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
For a little more than twenty years, alternative methods of dispute management have been employed to address various environmental conflicts in order to avoid the more traditional method of litigation. Mediation is a voluntary process which involves face-to-face negotiation among parties and the use of a neutral third-party negotiator. Environmental mediation has helped manage disputes related to land use, natural resource management, use of public lands, water resources, energy development, air quality and toxins (Bingham 1986).
Expanding The Boundaries Of Architectural Education: Making A Path To Sustainable Communities, Margot Mcdonald
Expanding The Boundaries Of Architectural Education: Making A Path To Sustainable Communities, Margot Mcdonald
Architecture
Architectural education offers students practice with complex problem-solving, most often separate from the public they will eventually serve. Design education that addresses real clients and real world concerns such as renewable energy and resources, social equity and environmental justice, and economic feasibility demands the skills of coordination, communication, vision, and leadership different from conventional architectural education. This paper outlines an innovative university curriculum that moves in the direction of educating architects as community leaders based on sustainable design and the concept of community in every aspect of the teaching model. Specifically, the teaching model creates an interactive group dynamic in …

Proceedings From The Service Learning Summit - September 9-10, 1995, Dale A. Blythe, Candyce Kroenke
Conference Proceedings
There is great promise and significant challenges to sustaining and expanding service learning--both as a method of teaching and a method of educational reform. While the practitioners that use service learning are convinced of its benefits to youth, it has been difficult to substantiate claimed outcomes, particularly those related to academic achievement. There are problems in the depth of practice, the depth of research, and the expectations for outcomes.
The purpose of the Summit was to get people together to share, from their own perspectives, their expectations of service learning, its impact, and what they think is needed to make …
Suburban Sprawl Or Suburban Villages? Defining Planning Principles For New Land Development In Indonesia, Stephen Day
Suburban Sprawl Or Suburban Villages? Defining Planning Principles For New Land Development In Indonesia, Stephen Day
Washington International Law Journal
Indonesian land use regulations are increasingly designating areas where urban growth is either targeted or excluded, echoing a similar trend in other Pacific Rim nations. Yet as with growth planning in the United States, there is a near total lack of regulatory direction guiding the form or pattern of urban development within the target areas. Sprawling suburban development, essentially patterned after midcentury-style American models, is rapidly consuming the most desirable developable land. Although significant policy goals and legislation are emerging that may provide the basis for suburban land planning principles, neither the central nor provincial governments have consistently articulated such …

A Developmental Perspective On Community Service In Adolescence, Miranda Yates, James Youniss
A Developmental Perspective On Community Service In Adolescence, Miranda Yates, James Youniss
School K-12
A substantial number of U.S. adolescents currently participate in community service and there is increased national interest in service programs. This article assesses the assumption of developmental benefits to service participants by critically reviewing 44 empirical studies. It offers a theoretical framework for understanding the findings by connecting them to identity development and delineating three pertinent concepts: agency, social relatedness, and moral-political awareness. These concepts are applied to studies that investigate: ( 1) the characteristics and motivations of participants, ( 2) the effects of service, and ( 3) the process of service. The findings support the conclusion that service activities …

Community Participation In Health, Family Planning And Development Activities: A Review Of International Experiences, Abbas Bhuiya, Fatima Yasmin, Farida Begum, Ubaidur Rob
Reproductive Health
The family planning (FP)/maternal and child health (MCH) program in Bangladesh has achieved success in the recent past, mostly through a large-scale government service-delivery system with support and cooperation from donors and nongovernmental organizations. There is concern about the financial and social sustainability of the program. Other issues include achievement of replacement-level fertility within a stipulated period and improvement of MCH-FP service quality. It is widely believed that most of the concerns will be taken care of with effective community participation. Before activating community initiatives, it is worth carrying out action research. A literature review was completed from July to …
