Nature's Infinite Book: Stories Old And New, Pamela L. Thimmes Dec 1996

Nature's Infinite Book: Stories Old And New, Pamela L. Thimmes

University of Dayton Review

In the next few pages I will discuss the importance of story and myth as well as topics that are connected with humans telling stories—community, worldviews, transformation and spirituality. In that vein, what follows is more than a personal statement; it is a community of voices. My own thoughts on these topics have been influenced by the work of Thomas Berry, David Suzuki, Sallie McFague. Aldo Leopold, Miriam Therese McGillis and Jay McDaniel, so the reflections and associations presented here as "personal positions" are not new or novel, nor do the following pages represent the complexity inherent in any of …

The Place Of Nature In The Thought Of Teilhard De Chardin, Michael H. Barnes Dec 1996

The Place Of Nature In The Thought Of Teilhard De Chardin, Michael H. Barnes

University of Dayton Review

Father Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, of the Society of Jesus, had two loves. He loved God and he loved the world. Traditional Christian spirituality taught him that he should forsake his love of the world for the sake of God. But his Jesuit training also taught him to see God in all things. So Teilhard integrated his two loves by finding God in the world.

Personal Perspectives On The Relations Between Humans And Nature, Ralph R. Frasca Dec 1996

Personal Perspectives On The Relations Between Humans And Nature, Ralph R. Frasca

University of Dayton Review

In academe we are rarely asked for our personal perspectives. Our colleagues prefer academic perspectives. These should reflect our considered judgment given the accepted methodology and current mainstream academic thinking. A "personal" perspective implies a release from constraints that is both liberating and scary. At a younger age I might have taken advantage of this freedom by reflecting on the romantic relationship between humans and nature. At my current age, however, I am like the bird who returns to its gilded cage. My personal perspective is the perspective of my discipline. My view of the relationship between humans and nature …

Review Of The Truth About The Virgin: Sex And Ritual In The Dead Sea Scrolls By Ita Sheres And Anne Kohn Blau, Sidnie White Crawford Dec 1996

Review Of The Truth About The Virgin: Sex And Ritual In The Dead Sea Scrolls By Ita Sheres And Anne Kohn Blau, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

A book about gender in the Dead Sea Scrolls is long overdue. For many years, the scholarly consensus that Qumran (where the scrolls were found) was inhabited by an isolated Jewish sect of celibate “monks” made the subject of gender, peripheral at best. With that consensus increasingly called into question, more writers are discovering material about women in the scrolls (see, for example, the excellent work of Eileen Schuller). A book that brings this material together is therefore very desirable. Unfortunately, this is not the book.
