The Structure Of The G Protein Heterotrimer GIα1Β1Γ2, Mark A. Wall, David E. Coleman, Ethan Lee, Jorge A. Iñiguez-Lluhi, Bruce A. Posner, Alfred G. Gilman, Stephen R. Sprang Dec 1995

The Structure Of The G Protein Heterotrimer GIα1Β1Γ2, Mark A. Wall, David E. Coleman, Ethan Lee, Jorge A. Iñiguez-Lluhi, Bruce A. Posner, Alfred G. Gilman, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The crystallographic structure of the G protein heterotrimer Giα1(GDP)β1γ2 (at 2.3 A) reveals two nonoverlapping regions of contact between α and β, an extended interface between β and nearly all of γ, and limited interaction of α with γ. The major α/β interface covers switch II of α, and GTP-induced rearrangement of switch II causes subunit dissociation during signaling. Alterations in GDP binding in the heterotrimer (compared with α-GDP) explain stabilization of the inactive conformation of α by βγ. Repeated WD motifs in β form a circularized sevenfold β propeller. The conserved cores of these …

Evaluation Of The Surface Changes In Enamel And Dentin Due To Possibility Of Thermal Overheating Induced By Erbium:Yag Laser Radiation, Tat̂Jana Dostálová, Helena Jelíková, Otakar Krejsa, Karel Hamal

Scanning Microscopy

This study investigates the thermal danger of Erbium (Er):YAG laser ablation. Classical preparation techniques have many disadvantages caused by unfavorable changes of temperature, pressure, and by mechanical vibrations. The effect of mechanical vibrations and pressure is eliminated by use of laser ablation technique. The purpose of this study was to analyze the side effects resulting from thermal changes of enamel and dentin in extracted human teeth subjected to pulsed Er:YAG laser radiation using both wet and dry ablation methods.

The micrographs of the sections were checked and measured afterwards. The effect of the investigated laser irradiation on the origin of …

New Or Emerging Infectious Diseases In Cattle, Dale M. Grotelueschen Dec 1995

New Or Emerging Infectious Diseases In Cattle, Dale M. Grotelueschen

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Disease is defined as a definite process having a characteristic progression of symptoms that may affect the whole body or any of its parts. Its cause, specific effects, and outcome may or may not be known. Infectious, metabolic, toxic, deficient, genetic and traumatic causes are examples of categories fitting the definition. Infectious processes frequently receive attention due in part to their ability to spread to other animals through various means.

Infectious processes are given "new or emerging" status for various reasons. New or relatively rare entities may become prevalent. Changes in existing infectious disease characteristics have resulted in new clinical …

Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd Dec 1995

Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compositions for treating tissue damage from ischemia contain PBN, or active derivatives thereof, which are active during ischemia in preventing ATP depletion of the cells which predisposes them to subsequent injury during reperfusion, and which are active during reperfusion as oxygen radical scavengers, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for systemic or local administration, especially to the CNS, spinal column and eyes. Based on animal studies, the dosage for treating damage due to stroke is in the range of 10 to 300 mg/kg. Similar dosages are useful in treating damage resulting from free radical generation during inflammation, either as a product …

Storytelling: A Natural Mnemonic: A Study Of A Storytelling Method To Positively Influence Student Recall Of Instruction, Tommy Oaks Dec 1995

Storytelling: A Natural Mnemonic: A Study Of A Storytelling Method To Positively Influence Student Recall Of Instruction, Tommy Oaks

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to determine what, if any, effect storytelling as a method of teaching has on retention of information. More specifically, this work was designed to determine if storytelling is more effective than a more traditional lecture method in influencing student recall of lesson content. In the Spring Semester of 1994, experiments were conducted to test the following hypothesis: College Students who receive instruction in a storytelling fashion will demonstrate significantly greater recall of instructional content than students who receive the same instruction in a more traditional lecture method.

One hundred fourteen students were randomly selected …

Evaluation Of Disability Simulations As A Teaching Tool For Undergraduate Students Majoring In Recreation And Related Fields, Melanie Collins Dec 1995

Evaluation Of Disability Simulations As A Teaching Tool For Undergraduate Students Majoring In Recreation And Related Fields, Melanie Collins

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to design a set of disability simulation activities and to determine the logical validity of the activities for use as a teaching tool for students preparing for careers in recreation and related fields. The general circumstances of three disabilities, spinal cord injury, visual impairment and hearing impairment, were defined and were then evaluated by a jury of experts. This is referred to in the study as the Definition of Circumstances. The definitions described the physical, environmental and psycho-social circumstances of each of the disabilities. Four disability simulation activities were designed, including parameters, rules and …

Patterns Of Sexual Dimorphism In North American Indian Groups, Cathi Lee Sullivan Dec 1995

Patterns Of Sexual Dimorphism In North American Indian Groups, Cathi Lee Sullivan

Masters Theses

This study examines patterns of sexual dimorphism in 26 North American Indian and Siberian groups. Past research on sexual dimorphism has looked into possible causative factors such as nutritional status, settlement type, marriage systems, sexual division of labor, and climate. No one explanation can be universally applied to all populations. Three measurements of height; standing height, sitting height, and sub-ischial height were examined for variation in sexual dimorphism. Univariate and multivariate statistical tests were performed to determine which component of stature contributes more to the variability in sexual dimorphism.

Results of this study indicate that the groups of the Northwest …
