From Pietism To Pluralism: Boston Personalism And The Liberal Era In American Methodist Theology, 1876-1953, Amos Yong
Dissertations and Theses
Boston personalism has generally been recognized as a philosophic system based upon a metaphysical idealism. What is less known, however, is that the founder of this school of thought and some of the major contributors to the early development of this tradition were committed members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
The purpose of this study is to examine the contributions made by the early Boston personalists to the cause of theological liberalism in the Methodist Church. It will be shown that personalist philosophers and theologians at Boston University ushered in and consolidated the liberal era in Methodist theology. Further, it …

Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (2), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Seminaries In Louisiana (2), John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
This article continues the study of Vincentian seminaries in Louisiana begun in the previous issue. Saint Vincent’s Theological Seminary, open from 1859 to 1867, and the Saint Louis Diocesan Seminary, open from 1900 to 1907, were in the same building next to Saint Stephen’s Church in New Orleans. The treatment of Saint Vincent’s describes its finances and gives the reasons for its selection as the relocation site for students from the seminary at LaFourche. Various reasons, including the threat of yellow fever, led to a generally small student body, except for two large groups in 1863 and 1867. The cost …

The debate over the scope of the concept of reasonableness - its application and use in testing the legality of normative conduct - is of long standing. Recently, it has been suggested that reasonableness be substituted for both legal and moral rightness. I go further in this Article and suggest reasonableness incorporates the goal of economic efficiency and that it is tested or shaped by a simple cost-benefit model that has its legal etiology in the equitable principle of balancing that, in turn, has its roots in the principle of Sic utere tuo ut alienum non laedas, or So use …
