From Comparative Risk To Decision Analysis: Ranking Solutions To Multiple-Value Environmental Problems, John Kadvany

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

While recognizing that the making of environmental policy is sufficiently complex that no one method can serve all conditions, Dr. Kadvany urges that more attention be given to multiattribute utility and decision analysis. He suggests this can help, e.g., to illuminate stakeholder values and generate alternative approaches.

Women's Perception Of Heart Disease As A Health Risk Associated With Identified Risk Factors, Kathy Mckay Aug 1995

Women's Perception Of Heart Disease As A Health Risk Associated With Identified Risk Factors, Kathy Mckay

MSN Research Projects

Heart disease has been identified as the leading cause of death in women in the United States, affecting an estimated 21,000 women under the age of 65. While these figures are alarming, population survey data have shown women do not perceive heart disease as a priority health problem- The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate women's perception of heart disease as a health risk. The Health Belief Model served as the theoretical framework for this study. Two research questions guided this study: Is there a significant correlation between selected demographic variables and perception of heart disease as a …

Calming Aids Phobia: Legal Implications Of The Low Risk Of Transmitting Hiv In The Health Care Setting, American Bar Association Aids Coordinating Committee Jun 1995

Calming Aids Phobia: Legal Implications Of The Low Risk Of Transmitting Hiv In The Health Care Setting, American Bar Association Aids Coordinating Committee

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Scientists are concluding that the risk of becoming infected with the virus that causes AIDS based on transmission from an infected health care worker is infinitesimal: in fact, only one health care worker has ever been documented as the source of HN transmission to a patient. This Article sets forth the medical evidence concerning this low risk and argues that legal decision making should incorporate these facts into its analysis of legal problems involving HN-infected health care workers. The Article analyzes three areas of such legal decision making: (1) employment and related credentialing of HN-infected health care workers; (2) liability …

The Role Of The Unconscious In The Perception Of Risks, Andrew F. Fritzsche

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Dr. Fritzsche argues that our world is too "rational" and that the psychology of the unconscious, as developed by Jung, can be key to understanding responses to hazards and to resolving conflicts that arise in the political management of risks.

Present Risk, Future Risk Or No Risk - Measuring And Predicting Perceptions Of Health Risks Of A Hazardous Waste Landfill, William K. Hallman, Abraham H. Wandersman Jun 1995

Present Risk, Future Risk Or No Risk - Measuring And Predicting Perceptions Of Health Risks Of A Hazardous Waste Landfill, William K. Hallman, Abraham H. Wandersman

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Given that perceived risk is multidimensional, the authors seek better understanding by focusing on health risks and, more particularly, on their temporality. In this way, they attempt to measure more meaningfully psychological influences on risk perceptions.

Evaluation Of Key Factors In Transportation Risk Analysis, Krishnapriya Madhavapeddi Jan 1995

Evaluation Of Key Factors In Transportation Risk Analysis, Krishnapriya Madhavapeddi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Pursuant to the enactment of federal legislation, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is presently evaluating Yucca Mountain as a candidate site for a repository to store spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level radioactive waste (HLRW). Risk analyses could be used to support transportation decisions (such as route and mode selection) pertaining to the repository program; The purpose of this study is to develop a procedure to facilitate comparative transportation risk assessment. A case study of Lincoln County, Nevada is used to discuss the significance of key input data required to support such risk analysis. A methodology was developed to …

A Framework For Modeling Risk And Emergency Response In Hazardous Materials Transportation, Emelinda Maano Parentela Jan 1995

A Framework For Modeling Risk And Emergency Response In Hazardous Materials Transportation, Emelinda Maano Parentela

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hazardous materials transport is a significant economic activity. Routing is one of the key issues in hazardous materials transport. Cost and risk are primary factors influencing routing. Emergency preparedness is an issue that is common to all of these. Traditionally, risks and emergency preparedness have been addressed as two interdependent issues, but the interactions between them have not been addressed explicitly. This often results in risk estimates that ignore the effect of emergency preparedness; This research presents a framework for quantifying effects of emergency preparedness on risk of hazardous materials transportation. Risk estimates are typically based on the probability of …

Actuarial Conservatism: Not In Public Sector Defined Benefit Pension Plans, Brian A. Jones

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993-2006)

Most actuaries tend to be conservative, and most, including this writer, probably would be happy to be so categorized. But actuarial conservatism may not be the best rule in defined benefit public sector pension plans. This paper argues that it is not appropriate for actuaries to employ conservatism assumptions in such public sector plans.
