Mystical Revelation And Knowledge Of God: Reclaiming Spirituality In Theology Through The Mystics, Elizabeth A. Merski
Mystical Revelation And Knowledge Of God: Reclaiming Spirituality In Theology Through The Mystics, Elizabeth A. Merski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the scholastic era, the pursuit of God has occurred preeminently through reason, leading to an imbalanced theology of God that persists to the present day in the form of intellect-centered theology. As a resolution, this work proposes that the mobilization of private, mystical revelation as a source of legitimized theological knowledge of God has the potential to close the existent epistemological gap between reason/belief and theology/spirituality, demonstrating the integral unity between authentic knowledge of God and the receiver’s personal acceptance of God in faith. After examining the required methodological components for the discipline of theology and identifying criteria for …
Theosis And The Morality Of Happiness: Investigating The Implications Of The Deification Doctrine In Aquinas, Emma Newgarden
Theosis And The Morality Of Happiness: Investigating The Implications Of The Deification Doctrine In Aquinas, Emma Newgarden
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This thesis examines the implications of a connection between the doctrine of deification or theosis (often summarized by the patristic axiom that God became man so that man might become God) and a Christian morality of happiness, an understanding of the moral life as that which comprises our true human flourishing—a transformative growth in virtue by which we grow in our capacity to realize our final telos of union with God. Deification, traditionally more strongly associated with Eastern Christian theology, has not typically been discussed in relation to the morality of happiness, arising primarily within the discourse of the contemporary …
The Course Of Empire Causes Us Much Grief: Imperialism, Slavery, And Genocide In The Theological Education Of Berkeley Divinity School, The Episcopal Seminary At Yale, Alden Fossett
Yale Divinity School Theses
The history of Berkeley Divinity School, the Episcopal seminary at Yale, traverses centuries and thousands of miles between Ireland, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Abundant institutional narratives concerning Berkeley Divinity School’s origin and development over time rehearse a mythology connecting the Anglo-Irish philosopher and bishop George Berkeley (1685–1753) and the establishment of Berkeley Divinity School in 1854 by Massachusetts-born professor and bishop John Williams (1817–1899). This thesis intervenes in the historiography of Berkeley Divinity School by situating John Williams’s allusion to George Berkeley’s unfulfilled dream to establish a college training Anglican missionaries on the island of Bermuda within a British imperial …
Primordial Recognition And The Structure Of Human Cognition: Toward A Quranic Epistemology, Jana El-Boustani
Primordial Recognition And The Structure Of Human Cognition: Toward A Quranic Epistemology, Jana El-Boustani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reconstructs a Qur’anic epistemological architecture grounded in narrative rather than abstract system-building. It argues that the Qur’an articulates a unified account of human cognition in which intelligibility is grounded in divine instruction, recognition is affirmed through primordial testimony, and knowledge is exercised within finite yet accountable faculties.
Through close analysis of the story of Adam in Surat al-Baqarah, the primordial covenant in Surat al-Aʿrāf, and the verse of the Amanah in Surat al-Aḥzāb, the study demonstrates that the Qur’an presents human knowing as structured, oriented, and morally conditioned. Revelation functions not as the introduction of wholly new knowledge, …
Paul’S Porneia: A Lexical Study Of Sexual Ethics And Communal Boundaries In The Pauline Corpus, Robert G. Flores
Paul’S Porneia: A Lexical Study Of Sexual Ethics And Communal Boundaries In The Pauline Corpus, Robert G. Flores
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis thoroughly examines the Apostle Paul’s use of the Greek term πορνεία within the Pauline corpus to challenge the normative translation of sexual immorality and the accompanying assumptions connected to this broad phrase. Modern scholarship continually isolates individual occurrences of πορνεία leading to inconsistent and reductionistic interpretations. Rather, through sustained philological analysis of πορνεία and its cognates, this thesis aims to situate Paul’s πορνεία within its contemporary cultural, historical, and lexical milieu with the objective of making Paul’s πορνεία distinct. With this background, it is posited that πορνεία functions as a communal boundary marker used to differentiate between the …
Navigating Mercy: Ethical And Emotional Terrains In Carolingian Society And Politics, Wei-Ting Chen
Navigating Mercy: Ethical And Emotional Terrains In Carolingian Society And Politics, Wei-Ting Chen
Theses and Dissertations--History
This dissertation investigates mercy in the Carolingian period, especially its political dimensions. A sustained, holistic examination of mercy in the early medieval period remains lacking. This study examines mercy not only as a history of an idea but also as a history of emotion, tracing its transformation from the ancient Greek and Roman worlds through patristic literature and into Carolingian political discourse. This study argues that mercy played a central role in the construction of Christian kingship within Carolingian political discourse. Early Church Fathers reinterpreted mercy from a controversial concept in Roman Stoic philosophy into a positive virtue in Christian …
The Meaning Of Christian Suffering In Aquinas, Pedro Cardoso Figueiredo Santiago
The Meaning Of Christian Suffering In Aquinas, Pedro Cardoso Figueiredo Santiago
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This thesis investigates the theological meaning of Christian suffering in the thought of Thomas Aquinas. While much attention has been given to Aquinas’s treatment of the problem of evil, little has been written on the positive and salvific meaning of suffering as it appears in his Christology, sacramental theology, and moral theology. This study aims to demonstrate that for Aquinas, suffering—when united to Christ—acquires a redemptive value that transforms human pain into a means of configuration to the crucified and risen Lord.
The first chapter develops the Christological foundation of Christian suffering. Drawing primarily from Summa Theologiae III, q. 69, …

Submissive Daughters, Empowered Daughters: Conduct Rhetoric And Evangelical Women’S Authority, Carrie Hill
Submissive Daughters, Empowered Daughters: Conduct Rhetoric And Evangelical Women’S Authority, Carrie Hill
All Dissertations
Submissive Daughters, Empowered Daughters: Conduct Rhetoric and Evangelical Women’s Authority explores how evangelical women rhetors navigate and rework patriarchal religious expectations through what I term conduct rhetoric. Building on the tradition of conduct literature, this project broadens the genre to include multimodal platforms—literature, radio/podcasts, television, and social media—used to instruct women in evangelical norms. Rather than passively accepting patriarchal constraints, evangelical women rhetors strategically adopt and reframe these constraints to construct rhetorical authority. Central to this study are two terms: affected piety and performative dissonance. Affected piety describes how women rhetorically present submission as the grounds for their …
A Raced Theology Of The Human Person: An Expanded Theological Anthropology, Cary W. Dabney
A Raced Theology Of The Human Person: An Expanded Theological Anthropology, Cary W. Dabney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on race as a critical, yet largely unaddressed, topic in Catholic theological anthropology. In Catholic colleges and universities that are recognized as members of the Cardinal Newman Society, theological concerns about race are deemed irrelevant for theological education in the faith and are altogether absent from the theology of the human person. As a result, this collection of institutions treats race as a specialty within pastoral theology, one that is significant to groups, but not a part of the fundamental theology of the human person. This ‘un-raced’ theological anthropology results in the institution’s inability to respond effectively …
The Contribution Of Catholic Compromise Principles In Global Health, Scott N. Helstad
The Contribution Of Catholic Compromise Principles In Global Health, Scott N. Helstad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Roman Catholic tradition has developed comprehensive ethical principles to address complex practical scenarios that encounter foundational value compromises. These are referred to as compromise principles and they have both a narrow and a broad focus. Narrowly, these compromise principles are critical for Catholic healthcare organizations in the United States with regard to the guidelines of the US Bishops in their Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. More broadly, these compromise principles are relevant in the secular realm regarding global health. This dissertation examines these varying perspectives, hence its title, “The Contribution of Catholic Compromise Principles …
The Experience Of A Personal Relationship With God: William Barry And The 20th Century Renewal Of Ignatian Spirituality, Chris Williams
The Experience Of A Personal Relationship With God: William Barry And The 20th Century Renewal Of Ignatian Spirituality, Chris Williams
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
William A. Barry made a significant contribution to the renewal of Ignatian Spirituality following Vatican II. A central theme of his life and work was the experience of a personal relationship with God. This thesis will tell the story of how Barry came to view the experience of a personal relationship with God as central to his own spiritual life and to Ignatian spirituality. It first explores Barry’s upbringing and formation in a pre- Vatican II Catholic Church and Society of Jesus, before turning to his experience of the transformations in the Church and the Society following Vatican II. It …

Mindful Of God: Meditation Practices Within Abrahamic Traditions, Jacob Aqua
Mindful Of God: Meditation Practices Within Abrahamic Traditions, Jacob Aqua
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Through the exploration of meditation practices within Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, this paper emphasizes the shared intention among practitioners of these Abrahamic traditions to connect with the Divine Presence of God in daily life. In modern America, where religious diversity and secularism coexist, meditation practices have gained traction in spiritual settings, secular spaces, religious communities, and other environments. This paper reviews three key meditation practices: the dhikr practice in Islam, the “Just Being” Shabbat practice in Judaism, and the “Silence as a Door to God” practice in Christianity. Through this review, significant phenomenological parallels emerge: the practices of cultivating stillness …
From The Personal To The Political: Abortion Salience And Women’S Voting Trends Over Three Decades, Danielle N. Myers
From The Personal To The Political: Abortion Salience And Women’S Voting Trends Over Three Decades, Danielle N. Myers
Political Science Theses - Archive
Abortion has shaped American politics for decades, yet its long-term impact on women’s political behavior remains under-examined. This study explores how abortion salience and media framing influenced women’s voter turnout between 1990 and 2020. Drawing on a content analysis of major newspaper coverage and voter data from the American National Election Studies (ANES), I test four hypotheses about turnout, belief alignment, party defection, and media framing effects. The results suggest that while Pro-Choice women consistently vote at higher rates and prioritize abortion in candidate selection, media salience alone does not significantly boost turnout or cause widespread party realignment. Additionally, increased …
Jeremiah And Falsehood, Ernesto A Guajardo
Jeremiah And Falsehood, Ernesto A Guajardo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis proposes that falsehood within Jeremiah is the culminating socio- theological development of a string of habitual and willful degradations done to Judah’s agency by its collective religious and public parties. Jeremiah’s inherent historical context being imbedded within the ancient Near East, and his intentional cross-comparison of Judah’s prophets with that of Samaria, calls for a reconsideration of Jeremiah’s standard reading to one that includes non-Israelite divination, prophecy, and ideas on the divine presence. Judah’s prophets and priests are specifically mentioned repeatedly throughout the text as being the encouragers of and sustainers of Judah’s idolatry, immoral behavior, false prophecy, …
Reducing Compassion Fatigue On A Cardiac Telemetry Unit, Nicole Rocio Garzon
Reducing Compassion Fatigue On A Cardiac Telemetry Unit, Nicole Rocio Garzon
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Background: Compassion fatigue (CF) among nurses is a significant concern affecting both individual well-being and patient care outcomes. Findings from a 2020 national survey found two-thirds of nurses (62%) struggle with CF and even a high rate for those nurses under the age of 25 years. Through a review of current literature and case studies, the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing stress, enhancing resilience, and improving overall job satisfaction among healthcare professional is examined. Practical implications for implementing these interventions in healthcare organizations are discussed, emphasizing the potential for creating supportive environments that foster emotional and mental well-being …
Religious Liberty: Natural Rights Or The Politics Of Conscience, Madeline Nielsen
Religious Liberty: Natural Rights Or The Politics Of Conscience, Madeline Nielsen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Religion Clause jurisprudence in the United States has long been a subject of debate. Vincent Phillip Muñoz and Steven D. Smith, two prominent scholars in the field, offer distinct perspectives on the interpretation and application of the Religion Clauses. Muñoz advocates for a natural rights construction, grounding religious liberty in the Founders' understanding of inalienable rights. In contrast, Smith analyzes the principle of religious liberty through reflecting upon how the Founders’, particularly James Madison, were influenced by the historical, philosophical, and theological development of the principle. This thesis conducts a comparative analysis of their viewpoints, focusing on their interpretations of …
Reconciling Moral Dissonance: A Framework For Re-Integrating Moral Orientation With Life Agency During Warfighters’ Struggles With Military Moral Injury, Jeffrey L. Zust
Reconciling Moral Dissonance: A Framework For Re-Integrating Moral Orientation With Life Agency During Warfighters’ Struggles With Military Moral Injury, Jeffrey L. Zust
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses case studies to critically examine the Three Mirror Model (TMM) as a framework for understanding the formation and healing of Military Moral Injury (MMI). I adapt the work of Stephen Brookfield and Neal Krause to evaluate using the TMM as a methodology for dealing with the complex issues of MMI within a military deployment cycle (training, warfighting, and healing) (Brookfield 2012, 2017; Krause 2022). Specifically, I use theorists, researchers, healers, and warfighters as key stakeholders to identify and critically examine the intersections of disciplines and the subsets of models where warfighters’ moral orientations and moral agency form …
The Contribution Of Pope Francis’ Integral Ecology To Global Ethics, Salvatore Enzo Del Brocco
The Contribution Of Pope Francis’ Integral Ecology To Global Ethics, Salvatore Enzo Del Brocco
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The defense of the dignity and inviolability of human life has always gained prominence in the doctrine of the Catholic Church. With Pope Francis' concept of integral ecology, Catholic bioethics is expanded to a broader understanding. His vision of integral ecology, global bioethics, and solidarity emphasizes the interconnectedness of all things and the importance of caring for one another and the planet. It calls us to recognize our common humanity and to work together for the common good by facing the numerous emerging problems of our times, which threaten the dignity of human life and the future life of the …
Schism, Synodality, And Communion In The Contemporary American Catholic Church, Nicola Peck
Schism, Synodality, And Communion In The Contemporary American Catholic Church, Nicola Peck
Undergraduate Theses
Divisions in the American Catholic Church have resulted in widespread dissent from Catholic moral teaching. In response to this dissent, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has used the language of communion to bar dissenting Catholics from the Eucharist, which is to push them to the margins of the Church. In contrast, Pope Francis has used the language of communion to welcome dissenting Catholics to the table through the Synod on Synodality. This thesis explores the theological implications of these different approaches to communion. It argues that the people of the Church must embrace an understanding of communion …
Happiness In Thomas Aquinas And Bernard Lonergan's Tripolar Dialectics Of History: Towards Africa's Flourishing, Chrisanttus Nakanda Berneri
Happiness In Thomas Aquinas And Bernard Lonergan's Tripolar Dialectics Of History: Towards Africa's Flourishing, Chrisanttus Nakanda Berneri
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
While exercising ministry in my home country, Cameroon, I have lived the negative effects of the internal confusion that can sometimes bedevil human life and the external chaos that can envelop society because of war. The case in point which I consider throughout this thesis is that of James Fonyuy, who experienced the death of his parents and family members. The savage hostility in my country and many other African countries has clearly revealed to me the troubling dichotomy between faith professed and faith lived. For this reason, this thesis attempts at eliminating this perceived wedge and replacing it instead …

Arming The Naked Public Square: America’S Catholic Bishops Confront The Reagan Administration, 1980-1983, Brooke Tranten
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation examines 1983 pastoral on war and peace, The Challenge of Peace, from the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB). It analyzes in-depth the process of the ad hoc committee of the NCCB that wrote the pastoral alongside the simultaneous debates within the American Catholic community and the Reagan administration surrounding the pastoral. Special attention is given here to the interactions of the Reagan administration with the ad hoc committee, led by Archbishop Joseph Bernardin, and the role of American Catholic lay critics Michael Novak, Philip Lawler, and George Weigel. It also explicates the intrapersonal aspect of drafting process, …
The Beauty Of A Good Appetite In A Social Media Age, Megan Heeder
The Beauty Of A Good Appetite In A Social Media Age, Megan Heeder
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation provides a theological response to eating disorders, disordered eating, and body dissatisfaction, particularly in light of social media’s influence on women and girls. Theologically, eating disorders may be thought of as conditions produced by a debased version of beauty, a self-transcending rather than self-negating conception of kenosis, and a distorted pursuit of goodness or “misguided moralism” that results. Paying particular attention to the feminine thin ideal and its influence on Western beauty standards, this dissertation engages Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theological aesthetics and presentation of kenosis alongside virtue ethics to respond to society’s impoverished vision of beauty and …
On The Principles And Ends Of Education: A Thomistic Approach, Keith Parkinson
On The Principles And Ends Of Education: A Thomistic Approach, Keith Parkinson
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
This dissertation develops an account of the nature of education from a Thomistic point of view. The thesis is that education is best understood as ‘human growth’—growth, because it is the natural development of potentialities inherent within the human person toward full actualization, and human, because it pertains in particular to those faculties of reason that are unique to human beings among all natural creatures, the intellect and will. The first three chapters provide an overview of Thomistic anthropology and virtue theory, from which I conclude that the final goal toward which all genuinely educational activity aims is the speculative …
Intergenerational Factors That Contribute To Millennial Church Engagement, Parker Sanderson
Intergenerational Factors That Contribute To Millennial Church Engagement, Parker Sanderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Millennial church attendance has declined since the beginning of the new millennium. Intergenerational ambivalence has been known to contribute to this phenomenon. Through this action research, the researcher sought to determine what intergenerational factors have led to millennials’ continued or discontinued attendance within churches. A phenomenological qualitative approach centered around interviews for this study was used to determine these intergenerational factors. The sample was taken from a 1,100-member church in a major Texas metropolitan area. The goal was to help church leaders decrease relational distancing and reduce ambivalent factors to increase millennial engagement in this local congregation.
The Relationship Between Marital Life And Celibacy In The Catholic Church, Saint-Gilbert Nortilus
The Relationship Between Marital Life And Celibacy In The Catholic Church, Saint-Gilbert Nortilus
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Despite the inordinate number of debates on celibacy, there is still a widely-held notion that celibacy is a problem in the church which needs reform in relation to the status quo proposed by the twenty first century. This paper seeks to shed light on the topic by juxtaposing its reality with that of marriage in light of church teaching. Analyzing the works of Evert, Skudlarek, Salzmann and Kelly, this paper seeks to shine theological light on the reality of the priestly celibacy with the assertion that it is a reality not clearly outlined to the world and that this reality …
Transition And Transcendence: An Approach To Constructive Transgender Theology With Insights From Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza And Karl Rahner, Maggie Nadalin
Transition And Transcendence: An Approach To Constructive Transgender Theology With Insights From Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza And Karl Rahner, Maggie Nadalin
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Recent attempts at theology impacting transgender individuals from the Catholic bishops in the United States have not only angered and disheartened many but have also failed to address transgender individuals as human persons. Relying on motifs devoid of scientific dialogue, the bishops’ attempts at applying theology to individuals of transgender experience ignores decades of research in both the worlds of the physical and social sciences.
This paper is an attempt to frame the discussion around transgender individuals in a space where theology and science are able to dialogue for their mutual enrichment. Drawing from the experience of the author as …
Pastoral Insight For The Development Of The Spiritual Life Of Children, Annie Mcdonnell
Pastoral Insight For The Development Of The Spiritual Life Of Children, Annie Mcdonnell
Religious & Theological Studies Student Work
There is immense growth during a child’s adolescent years. Children begin to identify likes and dislikes, embrace gifts and talents, and push boundaries to learn more about themselves in the process. The physical, psychological, social and emotional development of children is richly studied and researched. This paper argues that the spiritual side should receive just as much attention. Children have an inherent spirituality which they should be encouraged to engage, deepen, and develop as a natural aspect of their childhood experiences through intentional activities as provided by trusted and caring adults. This paper shares suggestions to support the development of …
Eudaimonist Exemplarism And Saints, Brian C. Clark
Eudaimonist Exemplarism And Saints, Brian C. Clark
Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary moral philosophy tends to treat saints as either maximally moral and thus exemplary only for those who share their ideals or as so morally excellent that they are inimitable and “Other.” Thus, the saint is practically useless as a model for plain persons. Moreover, in the case of Christian saints, modern moral theories tend not to account for their religious and theological dimensions. As a remedy, this dissertation argues for thinking about the exemplarity of saints in eudaimonist and theologically naturalist terms. Christian saints exemplify what Christians consider human flourishing, revising natural accounts of human flourishing but preserving the …
