This portfolio explores the journey of learning English language and composition from reading to understand, to writing to be understood. A major research essay, “Truth and Lying in Dystopian Literature”, compares and contrasts the theories presented in Plato’s Republic and Friedrich Nietzsche’s “Truth and Lying in a Non-Moral Sense” with the main themes of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and George Orwell’s 1984. This essay is used to show students the importance of reading to understand the author’s intent. Ineffective discharge education plays a role in increased readmission rates, adverse drug events, and worsened patient outcomes post-hospitalization. When combined, the resulting financial burden on America’s healthcare system is exorbitant, as is the physical and mental toll on unsuspecting patients. To close the current gaps in discharge teaching, this project is incorporating the teach-back method and utilizing updated medication handouts.
Starting on the sepsis unit of a large, local medical center – the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) interns employed assessment tools to identify areas for improvement. The data revealed rushed, incomprehensive discharge medication education and reflected in low HCAHPS scores …

The issue of sexual assault on college campuses is addressed in part by a mandate that all college students complete some form of sexual assault education. While current education programs have proven successful in teaching bystander education and dispelling rape myths, they have not proven to increase reporting rates while also decreasing the number of sexual assaults. This dissertation makes a pedagogical argument for a new approach to sexual assault and prevention education at the college level that would use literary rape narratives to dispel sexual assault myths, teach trauma theory principles, and address intersectional aspects of rape culture with …

This explanatory mixed-method action research describes how a social constructivist professional development program impacts self-reflection of foreign language teachers at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). The problem is that traditional professional development for foreign language teachers does not improve self-reflection. Despite their individual differences and qualifications, most teachers receive traditional in-service professional development (Darling-Hammond, Hyler, Gardner, & Espinoza, 2017) on a specific topic and have no time to reflect on their existing practices, newly presented concepts, or students' responses to instruction. Critical thinking and reasoning are fundamental skills for a diagnostic medical sonographer. This quantitative quasi-experimental study examined whether teaching diagnostic medical sonography students the scientific method made a significant difference in the student's critical thinking and reasoning skills. Using the Health Science Reasoning Test (HSRT), two groups of students were selected to participate in the study, with a control and experimental group. The HSRT was used to determine if a significant difference in critical thinking and reasoning was discernable from pre-to-post testing between the control and experimental group of students. Within the field of health professional education, one finds that anatomy often presents students with a great deal of difficulty. The literature in this area is piecemeal and there is limited work available examining the whole of this topic. A scoping review was conducted to determine how students are taught anatomy across multiple disciplines (medicine, dentistry, rehabilitation sciences, and undergraduate education) and to assess for any notable differences between these populations. The results found that scholarship on anatomy instruction varies based on educational context, and medical students are the most frequently targeted student population. It also found that the use …

The failure of Lean efforts can largely be attributed to the failure of organizations to prepare their employees for Lean implementation. Employees are provided with formal training that uses educational videos and classroom lectures. These videos and lectures are individual-oriented and do not engage employees by way of active participation. In first-year composition courses, there are three aspects of teaching that are researched well so far: disclosure of trauma in student writing, instructor feedback, and emotional labor. The disclosure of trauma is almost completely unavoidable in first-year composition. We encounter an issue with instructor feedback; how do we provide feedback to student writing, like grammar and mechanics, when the student has disclosed trauma in the writing? Additionally, we can build off this with emotional labor, which already occurs consistently in teaching but is heightened in this instance. The participants of the Capstone Project included 28 fourth-grade students in a public elementary school located on California’s Central Coast. This Capstone Project introduced a project-based learning lesson into a low-income classroom. The students were asked to create a project to demonstrate their knowledge on the given topic in place of a traditional-classroom worksheet. To teach within the correctional setting, an educator must get used to teaching with tension. Part of teaching a learner includes the emotions of the teachers and learners, as emotional experiences arise throughout teaching | learning that can be better addressed and coped with. The Sheffer stroke (|) is used to emphasize that teaching and learning are both simultaneous and dependent on the social interaction of learning as both the roles, teacher and learner, are interchangeable. For instructional purposes, teachers often use an informal reading inventory, among other assessments, to sort students into like-ability groups. While undoubtedly beneficial in terms of planning and small group work, it appears in some classrooms that informal reading inventory (IRI) data sometimes becomes the driving force in literacy-related curricular decisions – including using IRI data to limit the books students have access to. This study examined how and why faculty adopt podcasting as an instructional technology tool in their teaching. Podcasting is an instructional technology tool being used for teaching and learning in higher education. Faculty may record lectures with audio, video, and/or PowerPoint slides to instruct students on class material. Students may access podcasts at their convenience through various devices, including mobile devices and computers. Research has shown that students who use podcasts to study for tests tend to perform more successfully on tests. There is a nursing faculty shortage at a Mid-Atlantic associate degree nursing program. In response, program administrators have hired adjunct faculty with bachelor of science in nursing degrees (BSNs), hired full-time faculty with master of science in nursing degrees in areas other than education who also are not certified nurse educators, and reduced its minimum requirement for nursing faculty clinical experience. The purpose of this ethnography was to examine the elements of my personal goals and aspirations of being an elementary school teacher with the real experience of teaching students within my classroom. Through the lens of an ethnography, and grounded in the research components of culturally inclusive education and, this thesis provides a critical and needed pedagogical approach to how teachers can make a difference in the lives of their students, and in the process learn that they are really the ones being taught.

With the introduction of a national curriculum, content standards, and federally mandated assessment; involuntarily teachers have adopted test-based teaching approaches in the classroom. Concurrently, researchers are celebrating brain-based learning because of breakthroughs in neuroscience and cognitive psychology and are promoting it as a watershed teaching opportunity. This has created a gap between research and practice, meaning that teachers’ ability to implement brain-based learning has been affected negatively.
