World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Undergraduate Honors Theses
Through the examination of the interactions between modern and alternative healthcare practices in five Latin American countries (Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Mexico, and Cuba), this thesis explores the strengths of a variety of indigenous medical practices while laying the foundation for building bridges to the modern medical establishment in the United States as a means to benefit the health of both immigrants and native citizens.
Social Meanings Of Mortality: The Language Of Death And Disease In 19th Century Massachusetts, Jeffrey Keith Beemer
Social Meanings Of Mortality: The Language Of Death And Disease In 19th Century Massachusetts, Jeffrey Keith Beemer
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the emergence and development of cause-of-death registration in nineteenth-century Massachusetts. I examine the historical, demographic, sociopolitical, and theoretical conditions that gave rise to the first state-implemented cause-of-death registration system in the United States, Massachusetts's vital registration system. Developments in almost every arena of social life during the nineteenth century were shaped in some fashion through disease. The disease ecology changed dramatically during this period shifting from acute infectious to chronic degenerative diseases, which marked the beginning of the epidemiological transition. Registration systems were key components in this transitional period, providing the raw data on which nineteenth-century public …
An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Run Clinic For Women At Increased Risk For Breast Cancer On Anxiety, Depression, And Cancer Worry, Lisa Muto
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Many women have risk factors that can increase their risk for developing breast cancer. These women may benefit from recommendations based on their personal and family history. Women at increased risk may experience higher levels of anxiety, depression, or cancer worry than women who are at average or only slightly increased risk. By providing these women with an accurate risk assessment, these factors may be decreased. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effect of a nurse-run clinic for women at increased risk for breast cancer on anxiety, depression, and cancer worry.;A pre-test/post-test longitudinal design was used with …
Communication Baniers Between Providers And Parents Of Adi-Id Adolescent Patients Who Use Complementary And Alternative Medicine, Angela Sietz
Theses and Dissertations
There is increased use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children and adolescents. Some of the most common types of CAM used in ADHD include: modified diet, vitamins/and or minerals, dietary supplements, aromatherapy and chiropractic care. Many parents/patients do not share their use of CAM with their provider. This inadequate communication between parents and health care providers can be dangerous. This paper addresses the prevalence of ADHD, the types of CAM being used and discusses evidence in support of these therapies. Communication between patients and providers regarding the use of CAM …
Fibromyalgia Self-Care Management: Use Of Essential Oils, Regina Ann Sacco Izu Phd
Fibromyalgia Self-Care Management: Use Of Essential Oils, Regina Ann Sacco Izu Phd
Dissertations
Fibromyalgia is a female dominant chronic syndrome of diffuse muscle pain on palpation of at least 11 of 18 syndrome-associated tender points present for 3 months or longer. There is no cure. Self-care management involving multimodal integrative medicine approaches may increase treatment involvement resulting in a sense of control and pain relief. This embedded, single case study explored 'how' and 'why' an informant with fibromyalgia chose to initiate and continue self-care management using essential oils over several years to treat symptoms within context reality. Orem's Self-Care Deficit Model and the Principles of Integrative Medicine from the University of Arizona formed …

Physician Decision Criteria Regarding Omega-3 Dietary Supplements, Warren P. Lesser
Physician Decision Criteria Regarding Omega-3 Dietary Supplements, Warren P. Lesser
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
American Heart Association officials and other expert cardiologists recommend omega-3 (n-3) dietary supplementation for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, a prevalent health problem in the United States. Physicians' lack of understanding of possible n-3 preventive health benefits results in underprescribing n-3 dietary supplements and lower n-3 dietary supplement product sales. N-3 dietary supplement marketers do not understand physician n-3 prescribing decision criteria enough to optimize high-impact communication to physicians to increase n-3 dietary supplement product use. The purpose of this phenomenological research study was to improve n-3 marketers' understanding of how physicians reach decisions to prescribe or recommend products …
A Synthesized Model Of Compliance Based On Physician And Patient Reported Barriers To Hypertension Guidelines, Pamela Ballou-Nelson
A Synthesized Model Of Compliance Based On Physician And Patient Reported Barriers To Hypertension Guidelines, Pamela Ballou-Nelson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hypertension affects as many as 50-70 million Americans; early and consistent compliance to hypertension guidelines is important to prevent heart attack and stroke, both leading causes of death in the United States. Despite the advances in medicine and health-care technology, the effectiveness with which hypertension is managed at the individual and community level is less than optimal. The research questions in this study addressed the lack of physician compliance to hypertension guidelines and why patients fail to follow guidelines. Improving hypertension management depends on bridging the gap between physician awareness of evidence-based guidelines and patient compliance. Grounded theory was used …

Use Of Condensed Tannins Supplementation And Inorganic Copper As Deworming Agents In Naturally Infected Ewes And Lambs, Moara De Santana Martins
LSU Master's Theses
Sheep production is an important socioeconomic activity for the small producers and it can represent their primary income source. Gastrointestinal parasites have become the principal limiting factor for this industry around the world, especially because of the anthelmintic resistance phenomenon that has been increasing worldwide. The negligent use of anthelmintics has been reported as the main factor in the development of resistance. Among the parasites that infect sheep, H. contortus is considered the most harmful and also the parasite responsible for the fastest development of nematode resistance in small ruminants. Due to the economic impact this parasite may bring upon …
The Effects Of Alternative Treatments Such As Yoga And Meditation As Adjunctive Therapy On Adolescent Alcohol Abusers With A History Of Trauma, Ann Marie Hegarty
The Effects Of Alternative Treatments Such As Yoga And Meditation As Adjunctive Therapy On Adolescent Alcohol Abusers With A History Of Trauma, Ann Marie Hegarty
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to determine whether alternative forms of treatment such as yoga and meditation, when used adjunctively with traditional therapies, are effective in the treatment of adolescents with both alcohol use disorder (AUD) and a history of trauma. There have been studies linking relaxation therapy and meditation to improved outcomes in similar adult populations but very few have studied adolescents. Given the early onset of use and abuse of alcohol by many of those who also have a history of trauma, this study sought to explore the opinions of clinicians who utilize these alternative treatments. A total of …
Children With Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: A Guide To Therapeutic And Pharmacological Treatments, Rebecca Mcomie
Children With Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: A Guide To Therapeutic And Pharmacological Treatments, Rebecca Mcomie
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is becoming a more common diagnosis with young children and babies (PAGER, 2010). GERD is often misdiagnosed and there is no single test available to determine its presence (Eisen, 2001). The term reflux can be confusing and used to mean different things to different people. Often reflux is linked to colic in babies or may be considered a "normal" part of being a baby. But when a sequalae of symptoms arise in an infant, gastroesophageal reflux becomes a serious issue that needs to be addressed through a variety of interventions and sources (Sondheimer, 2006 ).
