Where Was The Government? In Inquiry Into The Events Of September 11, 2001, Elizabeth A. Bradshaw

Masters Theses

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 have forever changed the geopolitical landscape. Yet despite the significance of such an event, those working in the field of state crime have been reluctant to investigate the role of the United States government in failing to prevent the attacks. Utilizing the five criteria of state crime put forth by Kauzlarich, Mullins and Matthews (2003), the actions and inactions of the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the Federal Aviation Administration are examined. State Dominance And Political Corruption: Testing The Efficacy Of An Alternate Configuration Of Institutional-Anomie Theory Cross-Nationally, Carol L. S. Trent

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Extant assessments of Messner and Rosenfeld's institutional-anomie theory (1994) have generally supported the thesis that, in social collectives where the economy dominates, non-economic institutions (i.e. the family, education, polity) are rendered feeble, unable to exert their normative controls. The cultural values of these societies place primacy on "making it" (monetary success), while at the same time placing a much weaker emphasis on the licit means of achieving these goals. I will explain how the definition of culture ties in with the economic society of both regions. In writing about culture, I will attempt to explain if there really is a difference between …

From Soviet Woman To Global Sex Slave, Natalja Silver

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The turbulence of transition from a centralized economy to a market economy together with new migration dynamics and the worsening status of women in the former Soviet Union contributed to the growth and spread of the trafficking of women and girls. Difficult economic and social conditions have led many women to accept risks associated with seeking economic opportunities abroad. This in turn placed a number of them in situations where they were vulnerable to exploitation by human traffickers. These same economic conditions have tempted other individuals to engage in trafficking. This paper explores how economic changes, migration dynamics, and gender …

Asian Massage Parlors In Clark County, Angela Meiwen Lok

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The U.S. Department of Justice has identified Las Vegas, Nevada as a hotspot for trafficking for sexual exploitation (Farley, 2007). The objective of this research is to determine whether Asian massage parlors are openly operating as unlicensed businesses in Las Vegas and consider the licensing issues faced in Las Vegas. Recent focus on the issues of human trafficking and high profile stings against Asian massage parlors has created a public debate about the licensing and enforcement against Asian massage parlors in Clark County. This research will consider a number of facets surrounding Asian massage parlors, from stereotypes associated with Asian …
