By the year 2000, Latinos will become the largest minority group in the United States. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is occurring at a disproportionately high rate among Latinos. The Prevalence Of Abuse And Battering Among Homeless Women, And An Assessment Of Current Services Provided For Battered Women: Should Homeless Women Receive Such Services?, Liza Oktay Hicks Jan 1992

The Prevalence Of Abuse And Battering Among Homeless Women, And An Assessment Of Current Services Provided For Battered Women: Should Homeless Women Receive Such Services?, Liza Oktay Hicks

Honors Papers

Homeless women are treated as a distinct population from battered and abused women by the service industry. Over the last two decades, services have been developed aimed at helping abused and battered women. If most homeless women have histories of abuse, these services may be utilized as a model for providing services for homeless women. Before developing these types of services for homeless women, it is important to know 1) to what extent homeless women are abused and 2) whether the services provided for abused and battered women are effective.

This paper will review the relevant literature to this area …

The Evolution Of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics At Oberlin College, Leland J. Brandt Jan 1992

The Evolution Of Women's Intercollegiate Athletics At Oberlin College, Leland J. Brandt

Honors Papers

Over two years ago, I read an article written in 1973 entitled "Sport is Unfair to Women." While researching possible honors topics, I remembered that article. Preliminary research uncovered a wealth of information on women's athletics, Title IX, and the continuing problems faced by female athletes. By sheer coincidence, I learned that Oberlin College was investigated for possible Title IX violations. Further inquiry revealed that little if any research existed concerning the history of Oberlin's young women's athletic program. Before I could say "Jack Scott," the topic entranced me, and I remain under its spell to this day. If ever …

The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum Jan 1992

The Validity Of Perceived Physical Fitness In Adult Men And Women, Patricia Anne Mortati Mccollum

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the perception of personal physical fitness in adult men and women by comparing a Perceived Physical Fitness Index (PPFI) with a composite index of measured fitness. Subjects were 106 volunteer adults 36-55 years of age. They completed the PPFI (a 7-point Likert-type scale) and were then assessed for body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. A composite fitness score was compared with their PPFI score. Perceived fitness was significantly different than actual fitness (F (1,100) = 31.3, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001) and there was a significant gender difference (F (1,100) = 13.56, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.001). However, a significant interaction (F (1,100) = 21.88, {dollar}p <{dollar} 0.0001) indicated that the difference between perceived and actual fitness was not consistent for males and females. Further analysis revealed that females were able to estimate their fitness level more accurately than males. The results indicate that perceived fitness is a valid indicator of actual fitness for women but not for men.

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, anxiety was measured by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Scale and mood was measured by the General Health Questionnaire. The Neuman Systems Model was the conceptual framework for this study. Sixty-two women between the ages of 26-80 years completed the three questionnaires while awaiting the physician during an office visit. …

Factors Influencing A Battered Woman's Perception Of Controllability In Violent Intimate Relationships, Patricia Ann Chin Dnsc, Msn, Rn Jan 1992

Factors Influencing A Battered Woman's Perception Of Controllability In Violent Intimate Relationships, Patricia Ann Chin Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

Despite the fact that domestic violence has been the focus of empirical investigation for more than twenty years, little is known about the phenomenon. While the available body of knowledge provides a sketchy picture of the abused woman and her abuser, and helps to dispel many of the myths surrounding spousal abuse, it provides very little insight into the dynamics of wife abuse. This study, based upon a foundation of the Reformulated Learned Helplessness Theory, was designed to explore the nature of the relationships among concepts that have been identified within the context of battering, and that were thought to …
