Gully Evolution In The Upper Delaware River Basin Northeastern Kansas, Iona L. Meyer Nov 1992

Gully Evolution In The Upper Delaware River Basin Northeastern Kansas, Iona L. Meyer

Student Work

A small gully network developed across a pasture in the Dissected Till Plain of northeastern Kansas was monitored for one year to assess gully evolution in non-loessial materials. The objectives of this investigation were to identify stable and unstable drainage elements within the gully network; identify zones of net erosion and deposition; estimate the volume of sediment removed or deposited during the monitoring period; determine rates of headcut advancement; determine processes that advance and widen gullies, and to determine the historic development of the gully network.

Portions of the gully network were measured after every rain event exceeding 1.5 cm …

Thermal-Mechanical Response To An Intruding Magma Chamber, Christoph Arz Jan 1992

Thermal-Mechanical Response To An Intruding Magma Chamber, Christoph Arz

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The thermal-mechanical response of rock at shallow to medium depth beneath the earth's surface has been modeled as a magma body ascends toward it. The overall stress field is calculated by considering the country rock as a viscous fluid, a thermal-elastic material, or as an elasto-plastic material that fractures when its strength is overcome.
The stress field within and around a spherical magma body surrounded by a homogeneous, Newtonian fluid has been evaluated and can be used at deeper levels in the earth's crust where the viscosity of the country rock is relatively low. With decreasing depth wall rock material …

Stratigraphic Architecture Of An Extensional Orogen: The Mojave Extensional Belt, Southern California., Christopher John Travis Jan 1992

Stratigraphic Architecture Of An Extensional Orogen: The Mojave Extensional Belt, Southern California., Christopher John Travis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field-based studies and quantitative models provide new insights into the stratigraphic architecture of a developing continental extensional orogen. The early Miocene age Mojave Extensional Belt of southern California (MEB) exhibits a tripartite stratigraphy, consisting of (1) pre- to early synextension volcanic deposits, unconformably overlain by (2) syntectonic basement-derived megabreccia and breccia with local finer-grained units, overlain by (3) a posttectonic fining-upward sequence of gravel, sand, shale, and limestone. On a more local scale, stratigraphy and sediment dispersal within the MEB reflect the evolution of the major tectonic elements of the belt: (1) Breakaway zone. Strata of the western Newberry Mountains …

Geochronology And Geochemistry Of The Basement Orthogneisses Of The Araguaia Belt, Brazil, Candido A Veloso Moura Jan 1992

Geochronology And Geochemistry Of The Basement Orthogneisses Of The Araguaia Belt, Brazil, Candido A Veloso Moura

Doctoral Dissertations

Orthogneisses representing the basement rocks of the Araguaia belt (AB), Brazil, are exposed in the core of dome-like structures. Gneisses of trondhjemitic, tonalitic, and granodioritic (TTG) composition constitute the Colmeia Complex, while augen gneiss, of granitic composition, is termed Cantao Gneiss (CG). An Archean age is suggested for the TTG gneisses, although the available Rb-Sr ages for these rocks range between 1.8 and 2.6 Ga. A Rb-Sr age of 1.77 Ga for the CG is interpreted either as a crystallization age or a resetting age.

Geochronological and geochemical studies of the orthogneisses of five of these dome-like structures of the …
