It was assumed that the introduction of large scale industry into a traditional agrarian society would bring about some changes in the values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior of individual members of the social system. Such changes are related to one's place of residence as well as personal characteristics. This study examines the relationship between the infrastructure and the superstructure in the monopoly stage of capitalism. With the rise of monopoly capital a major issue of contention has been the development of a new class structure, the debate has centered around the nature and existence of the "middle class(es)". The three major issues are: a split in the working class due to the rise of an 'affluent worker'; a separation of mental and manual labor; and the development of a managerial class. The degree of people's participation in development programs appears to be the major determinant of development successes or failures. However, the strategy which makes participation efforts successful remains a mystery. This study aims to unravel that mystery by investigating factors significantly associated with farmers' participation in rural development programs. Using a probability random sample of 215 households from the rural community in the municipality of Samarinda, Indonesia, this study explores four major groups of variables (social exchange, individualism, social structure, and socio-political atmosphere) as they encompass factors associated with the degree of farmers' participation.
