Subthreshold Depression In The National Epidemiologic Survey On Alcohol And Related Conditions Iii (Nesarc-Iii): A Quantitative Analysis Of Prevalence, Characteristics, And Burden In A Nationally Representative Sample, Scott T. Young
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
While subthreshold depression (subD) is relatively young for a diagnostic concept at a mere half century old, it has burdened individuals and societies for far longer. Research has established that it is a highly prevalent, clinically important entity with clear links to personal distress and impairment (including increased suicidal ideation and behavior), societal burden (e.g., increased reliance on public assistance programs), and economic costs (both personal and public). Research has also demonstrated that it represents a significant risk factor for incident major depression (MD) and that it likely represents both a prodromal and residual state in the normal course of …
The Circulation Of Bronze Mirrors In Late Prehistoric Xinjiang (2000–200 B.C.), Yanlong Guo
The Circulation Of Bronze Mirrors In Late Prehistoric Xinjiang (2000–200 B.C.), Yanlong Guo
Art: Faculty Publications
Decades of archaeological excavations have yielded a large number of bronze mirrors from late prehistoric sites in Xinjiang. Scholarly attention has been invested in fitting these specular discs into a singular origin story of the Chinese mirror. Repositioning them within the context of the eastern Eurasian steppe, this article instead takes Xingjiang mirrors as artifacts indexing both diverse local developments and transregional patterns of circulation. A typological framework is proposed based on shape and structure: knob mirror with a flat rim, knob mirror with a flanged rim, grip mirror with a long handle, tanged mirror with a short protrusion, and …
Full Circle: Juvenal’S Egyptians And The Return Of The “Angry White Man” In Satire 15, Nancy Shumate
Full Circle: Juvenal’S Egyptians And The Return Of The “Angry White Man” In Satire 15, Nancy Shumate
Classical Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications
Some critics have seen a softening of Juvenal’s signature anger in the later satires, while others argue, on the contrary, that the indignatio animating the earlier poems resurfaces toward the end of the corpus. This paper supports the second position by comparing the characterization of speakers in the first six satires and in the fifteenth. In spite of its different setting and quasi-philosophical trappings, the (virtually) last poem’s speaker emerges as a variation of the same reactionary character type so fully drawn in the first two books. The Satires are thus framed by prototypes of the grievance-driven “angry white man” …
The Spiritual Nature Of The Italian Renaissance, Kaitlyn Kenney
The Spiritual Nature Of The Italian Renaissance, Kaitlyn Kenney
Senior Honors Theses
This study seeks to investigate the influence of faith in the emergence and development of the Italian Renaissance, in both the artwork and writing of the major artists and thinkers of the day, and the impact that new expressions of faith had on the viewing public. While the Renaissance is often labeled as a secular movement by modern scholars, this interpretation is largely due to the political motives of the Medici family who dominated Florence as the center of this artistic rebirth, on and off again throughout the period. On close examination, the philosophical and creative undercurrents of the movement …

Globalization And African Catholicism: Towards A New Era Of Evangelization, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Globalization And African Catholicism: Towards A New Era Of Evangelization, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This paper argues that evangelization takes place within the context of globalization, the phenomenon that integrates the economic, cultural, social, political and religious dimensions of human existence towards improved standard of living for humanity. While acknowledging the potential dangers of globalization, especially the expanding income disparity, marginalization, secularization, consumerism, the tendency towards monoculturalism and imperialism, the author advocates daily personal encounter with the person of Jesus as the springboard of Christian spirituality. This paper concentrates on the impact of globalization on African Catholicism’s appropriation of Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium for a new evangelization and recommends important changes in …
Old Gods In New Clothes: The French Revolutionary Cults And The "Rebirth Of The Golden Age", Jennifer Boyet
Old Gods In New Clothes: The French Revolutionary Cults And The "Rebirth Of The Golden Age", Jennifer Boyet
Masters Theses
The French Revolution's state cults were possible because of French intellectuals' preference for pre-Christian Greco-Roman civilization, as well as France's history of heterodoxy. The philosophes endorsed ancient Greco-Roman civilization as embodying mankind's ideal and more "natural" state; French revolutionary leaders avidly read these ideas of the Enlightenment philosophers. This Enlightenment Classicalism influenced the designers of the French state religions to mirror Greco-Roman paganism in the new regime's festivals and iconography. The French people's fascination with the Occult further created the cultural and intellectual climate for the creation and acceptance of these new religions of the dechristianized republic. Under this worldview, …
Organizing The World: Power Dynamics And “Civilization” In The British Museum, Katherine E. Steir
Organizing The World: Power Dynamics And “Civilization” In The British Museum, Katherine E. Steir
History Honors Projects
The British Museum has a long and complex relationship with the British Colonial project. Applying museum theory to case studies found in the museum, this paper explores the ways in which empire is reconstructed within the British Museum, and also investigates how public gallery spaces can engage with controversial history. In the 21st century the museum struggles to reinvent itself as a universal institution presenting collections from around the world with sensitivity. However, the museum still expresses nostalgia for the imperial past, and presents a specific and homogenous image of the ideal British citizen.

Imports Or Made-In-China: Comparison Of Two Constitutional Cases In China And The United States, Xiao Li
Imports Or Made-In-China: Comparison Of Two Constitutional Cases In China And The United States, Xiao Li
LLM Theses and Essays
When its economic increase attracts the global attention, China is also looking for a break-through in its judicial reform. The Qi v. Chen case (2001) was considered to be the Chinese version of Marbury v. Madison and gave rise to a heated discussion of the judicial review power in China. This article will analyze the doubts on the Qi case and the prospects of judicial review it indicates through comparison with Marbury v. Madison. Although Qi v. Chen opened the door for constitutional litigation, its dramatic facts and strained application of the Constitution threw it into question. Nevertheless, its effect …
Soyinka, Tutu, And The Globalization Of African Humanism, Aaron Eastley
Soyinka, Tutu, And The Globalization Of African Humanism, Aaron Eastley
Faculty Publications
In an article dated 13 March 2006, the British weekly New Statesman reported on the latest social intervention of the “most popular priest on the planet” (Campbell), former Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa. Nobel Peace Prize recipient Tutu, famous for his chairmanship of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, was negotiating a series of televised meetings between former Protestant paramilitaries from Northern Ireland and the surviving family members of people they had murdered. A reality TV spin-off with a suspiciously voyeuristic strain, the three-part BBC2miniseries “Facing the Truth”—an obvious reference to the South African TRC—was deemed “daring” …

The Effects Of Romano-Persian Interaction On The Cultures Of The Cities On The Syrian Limes Of The Roman Empire, Matthew Selmer
The Effects Of Romano-Persian Interaction On The Cultures Of The Cities On The Syrian Limes Of The Roman Empire, Matthew Selmer
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
Despite the almost continuous state of war that existed between the Roman and Persian Empires from the first century BCE until the destruction of the Sassanid Persian Empire, cultural exchange between East and West occurred frequently in the cities on the borders of these two empires. Despite their more apparent influences of Rome and Persia, local culture often had far reaching effects, not only in their respective cities and territories, but throughout Antiquity. This paper seeks to explore and explain the nature of this phenomenon and to give a new face to the relationships between the cultures and peoples that …
Engaging In Difficult Dialogues Beyond Color: Where Do You Draw The Line Between Race, Gender And Authority In The Classroom?, Safoura A. Boukari
Engaging In Difficult Dialogues Beyond Color: Where Do You Draw The Line Between Race, Gender And Authority In The Classroom?, Safoura A. Boukari
Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)
Grounding the discussion in Check Anta Diop’s Cradle theory, this paper invites us for a critical thinking and questioning of the very existence, the relevance of the color concept itself alongside the negative and detrimental impacts color has on, especially, Black women in academia. Historical, anthropological, scientific findings and theorists of the “Monogenesis” like, Asa G. Hilliard III (Free Your Mind: Return to the Source) traced the human origin back to a single human being, a woman, more than 10.000 years ago. In reference to the current trend, skin color could be defined as nothing, but the result of an …
The Trusteeship Of Legal Rulemaking, Edward S. Adams, Richard A. Saliterman
The Trusteeship Of Legal Rulemaking, Edward S. Adams, Richard A. Saliterman
Articles
Professor Robert D. Putnam's work is, in many respects, the contemporary companion to Democracy in America.' It comprehensively surveys and tests common presumptions held about our democracy with apparently very reliable quantitative data. Until recently, a work of this depth and breadth has been unavailable. Putnam sets forth a well supported thesis suggesting that even though American financial capital may be at a high, its "social capital" has perhaps reached a record low, or at least a level similar to the social, economic, and legal bottleneck of a century ago.' His use of empirical and combined data, however, probes into …
Children Raised By Homosexual Parents: Sexual Orientation, Mental & Sexual Health, Theresa Gramlich
Children Raised By Homosexual Parents: Sexual Orientation, Mental & Sexual Health, Theresa Gramlich
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Sex and morals have often been factors in custody disputes. Courts have felt that giving custody of children to homosexual parents would create an environment not in the best interest of the child. Many mental health professionals argue that these decisions have been based on prejudice and homophobia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate research on the sexual orientation of children raised by homosexual parents and review data on the mental/psychosexual health of these children. These studies revealed no difference between children raised by gay/lesbian parents versus those raised by heterosexual parents on IQ scores, gender identity, or …

Section II: Medieval, Political and Economic Development: Feudalism and Manorialism
The fall of Rome did not, as many contemporaries had expected, preface the end of the world. Rather, it was the end of a world, of a way of life which had characterized the Mediterranean basin for centuries. Amid the ruins of Greco-Roman Civilization, three new civilizations arose in the old imperial territories and their borderlands. One of these new civilizations -- the Western - is our major interest and its first phase -- the medieval -- will here demand our closer attention. The other two -- the Byzantine and the Islamic -- were Eastern and influenced rather than fathered …
