Dynamic Image Quality Control In Transparent Displays Based On Surrounding Light, Alexandra Elizabeth Boehm, Björn Nicolaas Servatius Vlaskamp, Hagar Adler, Bing Wu Oct 2026

Dynamic Image Quality Control In Transparent Displays Based On Surrounding Light, Alexandra Elizabeth Boehm, Björn Nicolaas Servatius Vlaskamp, Hagar Adler, Bing Wu

Defensive Publications Series

Transparent displays often use fixed brightness steps that do not account for surrounding light, which can cause visible line patterns and wasted processing power under changing lighting conditions. The disclosed technology provides a dynamic visual adaptation system for transparent screens by using sensors or cameras to measure surrounding light levels in real time. The system combines these measurements with display settings to calculate contrast threshold steps based on total light reaching the eye of an observer. By evaluating visual contrast sensitivity against total light levels, the system can adjust image bit depth, display driver parameters, or maximum screen brightness. This …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the perceptions of the impacts of social skills learning for teachers and parents at a preschool in a central African country. The theory that guided this study was Premack and Woodruff’s theory of mind as it provides a scholarly underpinning for understanding the social and communication deficits experienced by individuals with autism. The central research question that guided the study was: How do teachers and parents perceive the impacts of social skills education among children with autism spectrum disorders? A qualitative methodology using a phenomenological design was used. Purposive sampling was …

Returning To The Third Place: For Mental And Spiritual Well-Being, Angela M. Creason May 2026

Returning To The Third Place: For Mental And Spiritual Well-Being, Angela M. Creason

Masters Theses

This study investigates the impact of Generation Z’s (Gen Z’s) digital immersion and post-COVID lifestyle patterns on their interpersonal relationships. The literature shows that anxiety, continuous online connectivity, and pseudo-relationships developed through social media hinder their ability to form and maintain face-to-face connections. Using case studies, visual analyses, and research-grounded graphic design, the project examines how Gen Z utilizes coffee shops as a hybrid space for work and selective social interaction. The analysis shows that this generation is open to in-person engagement when environments feel convenient, low-pressure, and aligned with their values. These findings inform the development of Percolate, a …

Marketing Plan For Community Service Initiative L.A.C.E.S. (Limitless Accessibility For Children To Experience Sports), Grace Bryant

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

I. Executive Summary

L.A.C.E.S. (Limitless Accessibility for Children to Experience Sports) is a community-based initiative focused on increasing access to youth sports for children in underserved communities. The mission of L.A.C.E.S. is to ensure that every child can experience the joy and benefits of sport by addressing barriers such as cost, transportation, lack of resources, and limited awareness. While youth sports are widely known to support physical health, mental well-being, and social development, access to these opportunities is not equal. Research shows that participation rates are significantly lower among children from low-income households and marginalized communities, largely due to structural …

Digital Material Passports In The Aec Industry: A Scoping Review And Conceptualisation Of Future Research Challenges, Alejandro Veliz Reyes, Duhan Olmez, Jason Grout, Alexandra Carr Oct 2025

Digital Material Passports In The Aec Industry: A Scoping Review And Conceptualisation Of Future Research Challenges, Alejandro Veliz Reyes, Duhan Olmez, Jason Grout, Alexandra Carr

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Material passports (MPs) are datasets designed to track and manage building elements’ lifecycles, including the documentation of provenance, location, or disassembly information. The last few years have seen a growth in MPs development, catalysed by international, national, and regional directives on decarbonisation, data transparency, product labelling, and the need to rethink the reporting of sustainability metrics in the built environment. Recent MP prototypes, however, encompass multiple data architectures and have been implemented across various building typologies, regulatory jurisdictions, and construction processes, resulting in unclear adoption pathways in industry. In response to this challenge, this paper maps this emerging field using …

The News Is History: Building News Literacy Skills With Historic Primary Sources, Jen Hoyer Sep 2024

The News Is History: Building News Literacy Skills With Historic Primary Sources, Jen Hoyer

Publications and Research

The news is inescapable, and simultaneously headline-laden advertising-as-news follows us on scrolling video screens through public transit, at the gym, and on billboards lining the sidewalks. As the news and its lookalikes feel more and more omnipresent, the need for news literacy skills and their implementation feels more and more urgent. At the same time, continually morphing media platforms and news formats make it seem impossible to know: which of these things actually is the news? What’s most important for me to pay attention to?

What if, instead of teaching skills for understanding the next shiny news format, we turn …

Navigating Life: Neuroscience And Inclusive Design In Wayfinding Systems, Stephanie Jost, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

Wayfinding, as conceptualized by Lynch, has transformed from traditional navigation methods reliant on visual cues and landmarks to modern systems that integrate digital technologies and neuroscience. This study addresses the need for accessible and consistent wayfinding systems that accommodate diverse user abilities, particularly in complex environments such as public transit, hospitals, and large institutions. Current systems often lack coordination, clear signage, and comprehensive coverage, leading to navigation challenges. Through a multi-method approach, including literature review and case study analysis, this research evaluates best practices for inclusive wayfinding. Key findings emphasize the importance of consistent visual design, strategic sign placement, and …

Examining The Discovery Behaviors Of Comics Consumers, Tara Mccarron

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

The comics consumer base is big and it’s only getting bigger. And yet, very little research has been done on the consumer behavior of comics reads. In order to broaden the accessibility to comics consumer research, this paper examined the discovery behavior of 56 survey participants. The survey included questions pertaining to demographics, frequency of comics consumed, genres of comics consumed, formats used to consume comics, and methods used to discover comics. Due to limited scope, this paper focused solely on format preferences, discovery preferences, and the most-popular genre preferences. Based on this research, graphic novels remained the preferred format …

The Light Of The Revival: Stained-Glass Designs For Restituted Synagogues In Ukraine, Eugeny Kotylar, Magda Teter

Faculty Publications

The catalogue for the exhibition "The Light of the Revival: Stained-Glass Designs for Restituted Synagogues in Ukraine by Eugeny Kotlyar" held at Fordham University from September 10-December 10, 2023 offers a broad perspective on the revival of Ukrainian synagogues after Ukraine’s independence. It showcases three sets of stained-glass windows, which were designed by Eugeny Kotlyar and partially implemented in Ukrainian synagogues in the period from 1995 to 2005. Two early works shown here were the first samples of stained-glass designs for modern Ukrainian synagogues, which set a new trend. The first of them—the stained-glass windows for the Kharkiv Choral Synagogue …
