Digging Deeper: Quality Of Patient-Provider Communication Across Hispanic Subgroups, Lorraine S. Wallace, Jennifer E. Devoe, Edwin S. Rogers, Joanne Protheroe, Gillian Rowlands, George E. Fryer

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- UT Graduate School of Medicine

Background

Recent research suggests that ethnic subgroup designation plays an important role in health-related disparities among Hispanics. Our objective was to examine the influence of Hispanics' self-reported ethnic subgroup designation on perceptions of their health care providers' communication behaviors.

Methods

Cross-sectional analysis of the 2005 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). Participants included non-institutionalized Hispanics (n = 5197; US population estimate = 27,070,906), aged ≥18 years, reporting visiting a health care provider within the past 12 months. Six (n = 6) items were used to capture respondents' perceptions of their health care providers' communication behaviors.

Results

After controlling for socio-demographic covariates, …

The Peptide Hormone Pqdldhvflrfamide (Crustacean Myosuppressin) Modulates The Homarus Americanus Cardiac Neuromuscular System At Multiple Sites, J. S. Stevens, C. R. Cashman, C. M. Smith, K. M. Beale, D. W. Towle, A. E. Christie, P. S. Dickinson Dec 2009

The Peptide Hormone Pqdldhvflrfamide (Crustacean Myosuppressin) Modulates The Homarus Americanus Cardiac Neuromuscular System At Multiple Sites, J. S. Stevens, C. R. Cashman, C. M. Smith, K. M. Beale, D. W. Towle, A. E. Christie, P. S. Dickinson

Biology Faculty Publications

pQDLDHVFLRFamide is a highly conserved crustacean neuropeptide with a structure that places it within the myosuppressin subfamily of the FMRFamide-like peptides. Despite its apparent ubiquitous conservation in decapod crustaceans, the paracrine and/or endocrine roles played by pQDLDHVFLRFamide remain largely unknown. We have examined the actions of this peptide on the cardiac neuromuscular system of the American lobster Homarus americanus using four preparations: the intact animal, the heart in vitro, the isolated cardiac ganglion (CG), and a stimulated heart muscle preparation. In the intact animal, injection of myosuppressin caused a decrease in heartbeat frequency. Perfusion of the in vitro heart with …

Collagenous Myofibroblastic Tumor Of The Mandible: Case Report Of A Unique Locally Aggressive Neoplasm Journal Head And Neck Pathology, Jason W. Nash, Amy C. Hessel, Nadarajah Vigneswaran, Adel K. El-Naggar Dec 2009

Collagenous Myofibroblastic Tumor Of The Mandible: Case Report Of A Unique Locally Aggressive Neoplasm Journal Head And Neck Pathology, Jason W. Nash, Amy C. Hessel, Nadarajah Vigneswaran, Adel K. El-Naggar

Journal Articles

We report a locally aggressive collagenous myofibroblastic neoplasm of the mandible in an 18-year-old male. Clinically, the lesion presented with rapid growth and irregular mandibular bone destruction. Grossly, the tumor was 10 cm in greatest dimension, light-tan, firm, and involving the posterior one-thirds of the body and inferior half of the left mandibular ramus. Histologically, the lesion was composed of a loose spindle cell proliferation interspersed with periodic dense bands of collagen. The spindle cells reacted positively to smooth muscle actin, calponin, and focally to desmin and were negative for S-100, pan-cytokeratin, CD99, CD34 and caldesmon, supporting myofibroblastic derivation. At …

Statistics Collection Development Policy, David C. Tyler Dec 2009

Statistics Collection Development Policy, David C. Tyler

UNL Libraries: Collection Development Policies

The statistics collection supports the teaching, research, and service activities of the entire university community. Its primary audience is the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Its primary focus is support for the undergraduate and graduate curricula for statistics; its secondary focus is support for research and teaching in biometrics and bioinformatics. Specific and transient research needs of statistics faculty and graduate students should be supplemented through Interlibrary Loan. Materials are not purchased for the general public, though they may benefit from …

"Cansancio" Y Nación: El Combate Precoz De Los Salubristas Costarricenses Contra La Anquilostomiasis, Steven Palmer

History Publications

With The Sweat Of Our Brows: A Qualitative Interview Study On The Meaning Of Work For Illinois And Nebraska Family Farming Couples With Long Careers, Sheri J. Hink Dec 2009

With The Sweat Of Our Brows: A Qualitative Interview Study On The Meaning Of Work For Illinois And Nebraska Family Farming Couples With Long Careers, Sheri J. Hink

Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology

This thesis explores the social identities and the work and business strategies of five farming couples who had long farming careers in the Midwest. Much of the literature presented within this thesis discusses the hardships that family farmers face in today’s economy. However, the research also points to a strong attachment to farming and the farming lifestyle despite its many challenges. Using a qualitative interviewing method, I was interested in studying what meaning these farming couples attached to their work, including any gendered division of labor, and what survival techniques they had employed. I found that the five family farming …

Priming Deficiency In Male Subjects At Risk For Alcoholism: The N4 During A Lexical Decision Task, Lance O. Bauer Dec 2009

Priming Deficiency In Male Subjects At Risk For Alcoholism: The N4 During A Lexical Decision Task, Lance O. Bauer

UCHC Articles - Research

Abstract

Background

While there is extensive literature on the relationship between the P3 component of event-related potentials (ERPs) and risk for alcoholism, there are few published studies regarding other potentially important ERP components. One important candidate is the N4(00) component in the context of semantic processing, as abnormalities in this component have been reported for adult alcoholics.

Method

A semantic priming task was administered to non-alcohol dependent male offspring (18 to 25 years) of alcoholic fathers [high risk (HR) n=23] and non-alcoholic fathers [low risk (LR) n=28], to study whether the two groups differ in terms of the N4 component. …

That Could Be Me: The New Voices Of Poverty In Idaho, Stephanie Witt, Lisa Wennstrom, Carole Nemnich

Research and Reports

In fall of 2009, Boise State University Radio aired a series of stories highlighting the impacts of the changing economy on ordinary Idahoans. The stories were part of a larger project funded in part by the National Center for Media Engagement. The project culminated in a community roundtable held in September of 2009 at which advocates and policy makers discussed the stories, the larger context of poverty here in Idaho, and made policy recommendations. The Public Policy Center at Boise State University was contracted by Boise State Radio to prepare this short white paper. The paper is divided into three …
