We report a study of electron proton collisions at very low Q2, corresponding to virtual photoproduction at centre of mass energies in the range 100-295 GeV. The distribution in transverse energy of the observed hadrons is much harder than can be explained by soft processes. Some of the events show back-to-back two-jet production at the rate and with the characteristics expected from hard two-body scattering. A subset of the two-jet events have energy in the electron direction consistent with that expected from the photon remnant in resolved photon processes. © 1992.

Anaximander And The Architects, Robert Hahn
Anaximander And The Architects, Robert Hahn
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
This essay is divided into several sections. In (B) I set out the problem of making a diagram or model of Anaximander's cosmos, then in (C) I outline the relevant fragments and testimony - for Anaximander's picture of the cosmos and its formation — from which a diagram or model might be constructed. Next, in (D) I invite the reader to reflect on the differences between plan and elevation perspectives: two ways of Imagining. In (D.l), evidence for plan and elevation perspectives in ancient Egyptian architecture is examined, and the contributing influence is considered; in (D.2) evidence for plan and …

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers And The "Curse Of Doug Williams", Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
With the end of the National Football League's regular season, we have come to the end of another season of despair for the Tampa Bay Bucs. New levels of futility were achieved as the Bucs turned in their tenth consecutive season in which they have lost at least ten games. And the Bucs don't just lose, they lose in new and creative ways. This is a team of legendary incompetence, whose poor performance over a sustained period of time is earning them a special place in the history of the NFL.

Thermally Activated Reversible Threshold Shifts In Yba2Cu3O7-Δ/Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia/Si Capacitors, Jianmin Qiao, Eric M. Ajimine, Paresh P. Patel, Geoffrey L. Giese, Cary Y. Yang
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Yba2Cu3O7-δ/yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ)/silicon superconductor–insulator–semiconductor capacitors are characterized with capacitance‐voltage (C‐V) measurements at different gate‐voltage sweep rates and under bias‐temperature cycling. It is shown that ionic conduction in YSZ causes both hysteresis and stretch‐out in room‐temperature C‐V curves. A thermally activated process with an activation energy of about 39 meV in YSZ and/or at YSZ/Si interface is attributed to trapping/detrapping mechanisms in the SiOx interfacial layer between YSZ and Si. The negative mobile ions in YSZ can be moved by an applied electric field at room temperature and then ‘‘frozen’’ with decreasing temperature, giving …
Foundationalism, Coherentism, And Aristotle, Robin A. Smith
Foundationalism, Coherentism, And Aristotle, Robin A. Smith
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
It is the need to respond to various forms of relativism, with their nihilistic consequences for philosophy and science, that was the primary epistemological goal for Plato and Aristotle. Such a goal is a far more credible and a far more urgent one for them than the refutation of Cartesian radical skepticism, a position they do not even seem to take seriously.
Giant Suppression Of Flux-Flow Resistivity In Heavy-Ion Irradiated Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 Films: Influence Of Linear Defects On Vortex Transport, R.C. Budhani, M. Suenaga, Sy_Hwang Liou
Giant Suppression Of Flux-Flow Resistivity In Heavy-Ion Irradiated Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 Films: Influence Of Linear Defects On Vortex Transport, R.C. Budhani, M. Suenaga, Sy_Hwang Liou
Sy-Hwang Liou Publications
A large shift of the onset of flux-flow resistivity and the irreversibility line Hirr (T) to higher temperatures is observed in Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 films containing linear defects created by Ag+21 ion irradiation. The Hirr(T), which has a characteristic ssL shape in highly anisotropic Tl and Bi based cuprates, becomes more like that of YBa2Cu3O7 in the presence of these defects. The Jc at 77 K also shows a large increase as a result of flux localization at the …

The Ten Days Of Christmas: Tv Sports, Richard C. Crepeau
The Ten Days Of Christmas: Tv Sports, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The Twelve Days of Christmas we don't have, but we do have ten days of Christmas from December 25 through January 3 during which television offers a mind-boggling array of football, basketball(professional and college), and hockey. Sports television in the late 20th century may have spawned an entirely new concept of the days of Christmas.
