Yale Journal of Music & Religion

The article presents a translation of an important document about organ music, published by the Theology Department at Wittenberg University in 1597. The article presents the first complete English translation of the text and it analyzes the historical context of the document.

A quantitative research method with survey design was employed. The population consisted of 102 students at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah level, and a sample of 80 students was determined using the Krejcie and Morgan formula. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. In Defense Of Moving From A Music Production Curriculum To A Commercial Music Curriculum, Jeff Mccoy, Christopher Andrew Brown Jun 2023

In Defense Of Moving From A Music Production Curriculum To A Commercial Music Curriculum, Jeff Mccoy, Christopher Andrew Brown

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

The music industry has significantly evolved in recent years, largely due to the growth of newer forms of technology, such as distribution platforms and music production tools. With technological changes, academic institutions must understand the need to alter their curricula to better prepare students for the growing field of commercial music. Traditional music education programs emphasized classical music, music theory, and instrumental and vocal skills; however, students wanting to enter the world of commercial music need a broader range of knowledge, including business, marketing, copyright law, self-publishing, and music licensing as well as skills in operating various kinds of hardware …

The Indispensability Of Back Translation: Mediating Faithfulness And Naturalness In The Translation Of The Bible Into An Unfamiliar Tongue, Rhoneil M. Arevalo Jan 2023

The Indispensability Of Back Translation: Mediating Faithfulness And Naturalness In The Translation Of The Bible Into An Unfamiliar Tongue, Rhoneil M. Arevalo

Landas

This paper examines the tension between faithfulness and naturalness in translating the Bible into the mother tongues of diverse peoples. While both are essential, they often conflict in practice. Faithfulness requires accurately conveying the original author’s intent, whereas naturalness demands that the message be expressed clearly and idiomatically in the receptor language. This tension is reflected in the differing roles of translation officers and local translators: officers prioritize fidelity to the source text, while translators ensure linguistic and cultural appropriateness. A key challenge arises when translation officers do not know the receptor language, limiting their ability to assess naturalness. The …

The Occupation Of The Uyghur People By The Chinese Communist Party, Duncan Forrest Sep 2022

The Occupation Of The Uyghur People By The Chinese Communist Party, Duncan Forrest

Ballard Brief

The Uyghurs are a group of ethnic Muslims in China that have recently been invaded by an external government: the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The Uyghurs inhabit a resource-rich part of China that the CCP desires to control because of China's growing population and large-scale international projects. The stark religious differences between the CCP and Uyghurs have also fueled the conflict. Additionally, the CCP has claimed that the Uyghur people are separatists and terrorists, threatening the CCP. The unforthcoming nature of the CCP has made it difficult for outside observers to understand the extent of the human rights violations in …

Transitions In Collegiate Church Music Pedagogy: Developing A Pedagogy For Undergraduate Modern Worship Curriculum, Christopher Andrew Brown Jun 2022

Transitions In Collegiate Church Music Pedagogy: Developing A Pedagogy For Undergraduate Modern Worship Curriculum, Christopher Andrew Brown

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Church music pedagogy has a rich history dating back to the 9th century and is rooted in scripture and ancient traditions. Changes over the centuries have been gradual with incremental transitions; however, since the introduction of pop and rock musical stylings to church settings almost sixty years ago, changes have been swift and dramatic. The advent of modern worship has left Christian higher learning institutions scrambling to find a place where the curriculum would be useful and relevant to the modern 21st century Church. This paper seeks to examine the historical background of Christian church music pedagogy while …

A Reader’S Guide To Worship And Liturgical Studies, David Kneip Apr 2022

A Reader’S Guide To Worship And Liturgical Studies, David Kneip

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

The history of writing about worship in the Christian tradition is almost as old as the tradition itself, and it shows no sign of abating anytime soon. As a result, readers may find it difficult to know where to begin reading, and how to evaluate books that are popular or otherwise available to them. This annotated bibliography aims to assist readers in navigating the huge field of Christian publishing in worship studies, both by offering specific book recommendations and by demonstrating some of the different sub-categories that one might examine in attempting to choose what to read or study. The …

Minor Letnica: (Re)Locating The Tradition Of Shared Worship In North Macedonia, Ksenia Trofimova

Journal of Global Catholicism

This paper addresses trajectories of historical and devotional continuity of the annual pilgrimage to a Marian shrine. It analyzes the ways in which traditional worship of the Catholic Church in Letnica (Kosovo)—a major regional sanctuary of the former Yugoslavia—is relocated and replicated in a small chapel of St. Joseph in Skopje (North Macedonia). Both sites have been for a long period of time institutionally connected and shared by followers of different religious traditions (Catholic and Orthodox devotees, and especially by Muslims). Drawing upon fieldwork carried out in Macedonia and Serbia between 2014-2019, I focus on the processes of social construction …

Something Old, Something New: How New Churches Are Embracing Liturgy, Winfield Bevins Apr 2020

Something Old, Something New: How New Churches Are Embracing Liturgy, Winfield Bevins

Great Commission Research Journal

The movement toward ancient church tradition has been well documented; however, there has also been a steady rise of new churches that are embracing church tradition and liturgy. The first part of this article will examine the history behind this movement and the factors that have contributed to its development. Next, it will look at four case studies of new churches that are embracing liturgy, which I refer to as neo-liturgical churches. It will end with an exploration of the promise that this may hold for reaching young adults.

The Song Of Cuba’S Great Awakening: Music In Baptist Worship And Witness, Michael Sharp, Ed Steele Apr 2020

The Song Of Cuba’S Great Awakening: Music In Baptist Worship And Witness, Michael Sharp, Ed Steele

Great Commission Research Journal

From the 1990s to the present, Cuban Baptists have witnessed a time of unparalleled church growth. During that time frame, musicians have participated in ministries aimed at church growth by organizing largescale public musical events, compiling a Cuban hymnal that included indigenous Cubano worship songs, developing new programs of leadership training for church musicians, and employing music in missionary projects both at home and abroad. This article explores what can be learned from the Cuban Baptists’ experience regarding music as an effective tool in evangelism, the value of musicians reaching musicians as a mission strategy, the importance of ethnodoxology in …

Ecclesia Semper Sanctificanda: Historic Models Of Catechesis And The Cultivation Of Social Holiness, Jonathan A. Powers Jan 2019

Ecclesia Semper Sanctificanda: Historic Models Of Catechesis And The Cultivation Of Social Holiness, Jonathan A. Powers

The Asbury Journal

This study aims to show how the maintenance of holy life and love in the church requires intentional and continual cultivation by the church. If the church is to be continually sanctified then it must intentionally invest in the sanctification of its members. The article examines three historic examples of catechesis in order to exhibit models whereby the church has taken seriously the task of forming disciples who display holiness of heart and life. This article looks at the Didache and On the Apostolic Tradition, as well a John Wesley's use of societies, class meetings, and band meetings to …

Educating In The Spirit: An Examination Of The Person And Role Of The Holy Spirit In Christian School Education (Part Two), Thyra Cameron, James Swezey Jan 2015

Educating In The Spirit: An Examination Of The Person And Role Of The Holy Spirit In Christian School Education (Part Two), Thyra Cameron, James Swezey

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This study is the second of a two-part article that examines the Person and role of the Holy Spirit in Christian school education. Part One (ICCTE Journal, 10(1)) was an extensive literature review of the Person and role of the Holy Spirit from the two perspectives. Part Two is a cross-case study of two principals who led schools representing each perspective. The rationale for this study is that since Christian schools submit to the authority of the Bible, and Scripture recognizes the preeminence of the Holy Spirit, these schools would seek to comply with these biblical prescriptions. The …

Seventeenth Century Published Quaker Verse, Rosemary Moore Oct 2014

Seventeenth Century Published Quaker Verse, Rosemary Moore

Quaker Studies

Early Quakers disapproved of most aspects of popular culture, and before 1661 they published very little verse. During the 1660s some thirty Quaker authors published verse, addressed both to Quakers and to the public. The impetus behind this surge of verse publication was probably the appearance during 1660 and 1661 of a number of papers by John Perrot, a Quaker preacher who had been arrested in Italy and imprisoned by the Inquisition . His writings, which were brought to England, included a considerable amount of poetry. Perrot was released in 1661 and returned to England, feted by many Quakers as …

Respect Differences? Challenging The Common Guidelines In Social Justice Education, Özlem Sensoy, Robin Diangelo Sep 2014

Respect Differences? Challenging The Common Guidelines In Social Justice Education, Özlem Sensoy, Robin Diangelo

Democracy & Education

In social justice education, it is common to establish guidelines for classroom discussions. We examine the limits of these guidelines in achieving the goals of social justice education, arguing that they are not adequately responsive to power relations. Rather than creating a supportive space for dialogue, these guidelines can actually interfere with achieving social justice education goals. We also describe our efforts to engage alternative strategies for responding to power in the social justice classroom.

Behaving Beyond Your Barriers, Melissa Pratt Jul 2013

Behaving Beyond Your Barriers, Melissa Pratt

Great Commission Research Journal

Pastoral leaders must embrace the attitude that God expects His church to grow. Effective pastors must be future-focused rather than problem-focused. They must see and personally live beyond where a church is, beyond where the barriers to growth are, and into the place God wants to take His people. Pastors must identify the behaviors of “next-level” churches to evaluate what kinds of behaviors current church leaders and members should adopt. After casting a “next-level” vision, Pastors should equip their members to behave not as they are, but as they desire to become in order to push through barriers to growth.
