The Politics Of Fertility: Population And Pronatalism In Ladakh, Jennifer Aengst Jul 2103

The Politics Of Fertility: Population And Pronatalism In Ladakh, Jennifer Aengst

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In India’s northwestern region of Ladakh, the linkage between reproduction, politics, and fertility is both complicated and contested, evident in increasing population discourses and the re-emergence of a Buddhist pronatalist movement. This paper examines the impacts of population discourses and pronatalism on women’s reproductive decision-making, as well as on the delivery of healthcare throughout Ladakh. Population discourses currently circulating produce two reproductive subjects—the “hyper-fertile Muslim woman” and the “vulnerable Buddhist”—both of which have been central in revitalizing Buddhist pronatalism. Data collected through a hospital-based survey and interviews shows that fertility behavior is shaped by religious interpretations, political mobilization, and pressure …

Development Of A Multidimensional Psychometric Scale For Assessing Vulnerability In Human Behavior, Jibran Rasheed Khan, Sumaira Mustufa Qureshi, Farhan Ahmed Siddiqui, Syed Asim Ali

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Human behavior is a persistent and primary cybersecurity vulnerability. However, existing psychometric tools for assessing these factors are often fragmented, focusing on isolated aspects such as knowledge, compliance intentions, or organizational context, and lack a unifying theoretical framework. To address this gap, this study developed and pilot-tested the Cyber-behavioral Index, a novel multidimensional instrument to holistically assess human behavior. The scale operationalizes the CBS framework, comprising five latent dimensions: attitude and habits, perception and belief, social influence, digital influence, and trust in technology. Following a rigorous development process including expert review (n = 3) and cognitive pretesting (n = 10), …

Co-Creation Of Classroom Language: Supporting Learners To Develop Expressions Of Uncertainty And Statistical Concepts, Jioo Nimkar, Nayanatara Ruth Gautham

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This qualitative study explored how Grade 4 students and the researcher co-created language to express statistical concepts in a multilingual Indian classroom during a week-long instructional sequence. The analysis draws on a situated socio-cultural perspective on language in mathematics. Students’ language progressed from simple claims to more refined and sophisticated expressions, enabling them to discuss central tendencies and distributions while acknowledging uncertainty. Co-created phrases such as āsapās reshā (the nearby line) not only supported communication but also deepened reasoning. The article also discusses what role scaffolding played in refining these informal resources.

Teachers’ Knowledge And Use Of Mathematics Register For Teaching And Communication, Pauline Tiong, Sheena Tan Feb 2027

Teachers’ Knowledge And Use Of Mathematics Register For Teaching And Communication, Pauline Tiong, Sheena Tan

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Research has progressively considered a resource-oriented rather than a deficit-based approach towards understanding the role of language in helping students learn mathematical concepts. Notably, there has been a call for greater attention to the notion of mathematics teaching talk, which focuses on teachers’ use of language as a resource to teach mathematics (and the language of mathematics). It is argued that mathematics teaching talk plays an important role in enabling teachers to communicate mathematical ideas or meanings of mathematical concepts and in turn, preparing students to participate better in mathematical discourse practices. Specifically, this paper seeks to exemplify what teachers …

Affectivity As A Form Of Communication During Interactions Between Parent, Child, And Touchcounts, Qiang Lin

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This qualitative study examines communication in family mathematics settings, focusing on how embodied communication is constituted during parent–child interaction with a multitouch technology application, TouchCounts. Moving beyond information–transmission perspectives, the study adopts an embodied and relational approach centered on affectivity—conceptualized as the circulation of attunement, resonance, and intensity of movement and feeling across human and non-human components of the parent–child–TouchCounts assemblage. Drawing on close qualitative analysis of two selected video-recorded excerpts, the study traces how mathematical events unfold moment by moment through bodily action and material engagement, and how affective flow shapes how participants respond to one …

Book Review: Irrationality, Transcendence And The Circle-Squaring Problem: An Annotated Translation Of J. H. Lambert’S Vorläufige Kenntnisse And Mémoire (2nd Ed.), Bharath Sriraman

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This review examines Irrationality, Transcendence and the Circle-Squaring Problem (2nd ed., 2024) by Eduardo Dorrego López and Elías Fuentes Guillén, offering the first complete annotated English translations of Johann Heinrich Lambert’s two foundational texts on the irrationality of π: the semi-popular Vorläufige Kenntnisse (1766/1770) and the rigorous Mémoire (1761/1768). The review situates these translations within Lambert’s remarkable and largely underappreciated life—a self-taught polymath who rose from a tailor’s workshop in Mulhouse to the Berlin Academy of Sciences—and gives careful attention to the proof of irrationality of π via continued fractions, placing it in dialogue with the Niven–Hermite integral approach, the …

Vincentians Versus Jansenists: Violence During A Mission, John E. Rybolt C.M. Oct 2026

Vincentians Versus Jansenists: Violence During A Mission, John E. Rybolt C.M.

Vincentian Studies

This study presents and translates the text of an anonymous Jansenist pamphlet of 1739 which narrates a series of violent events that took place during a mission that French Vincentians preached in the parish of Le Plessis-Rozainvilliers. The pastor and the Vincentian mission team both fueled the outbreak of violence. The incidents described offer harrowing insight into attitudes and strongly held beliefs of the era. The context for this was the period of great conflict within France spurred by the bull of Clement XI, Unigenitus [Dei filius], issued on 8 September 1713 to condemn a Jansenist theologian. Rybolt provides an …

Stem Cell-Based Therapies In Periodontology And Implant Dentistry: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Abdullah Saeed, Marycris Padrigo Oct 2026

Stem Cell-Based Therapies In Periodontology And Implant Dentistry: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Abdullah Saeed, Marycris Padrigo

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Introduction: Periodontal disease and peri-implantitis remain the leading causes of tooth and implant loss, and conventional regenerative procedures consistently fall short of full structural restoration. Stem cell therapies have emerged as a promising alternative, operating through multi-lineage differentiation, immunomodulation via paracrine signaling, and extracellular vesicle communication. Prior systematic reviews, however, lacked methodological rigor — omitting clustering adjustments, REML/HKSJ estimation, prediction intervals, and publication bias modeling.

Aim: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated whether stem cell therapy produces superior clinical and radiographic outcomes compared to cell-free controls in adults with periodontal or peri-implant bone defects.

Methods: Searches across …

Estimation Of Unmeasurable External Disturbances Of A Dynamic Object Based On A Robust Adaptive Kalman Filter, Bunyod Mamurjon Ugli Buronov

Technical science and innovation

This article considers the problem of directly estimating unmeasurable external disturbances acting on a dynamic object under the condition that the state vector of the object is available for measurement. In the considered case, the problem is reduced to the estimation of an unknown input of a dynamic system. It is shown that when the system state is measurable, both a direct inversion scheme based on the object’s dynamic equation and filtering methods that eliminate the need for coarse numerical differentiation can be applied. For slowly varying disturbances, a random walk model with a small process noise covariance is proposed, …
