The Spread And Utility Of Social Network Analysis Across A Group Of Health Behavior Researchers, Megan S. Patterson, Tyler Prochnow Med, Patricia Goodson

Health Behavior Research

Social network analysis (SNA), both as theory and methodology, is a powerful framework for delimiting and studying health behaviors. Using SNA allows scholars to answer new research questions, innovatively investigate the social and systemic contexts of health and behavior, and collaborate on multi- or inter-disciplinary projects. As a result, SNA is growing in popularity within health behavior research and practice. Despite SNA’s contribution and appeal, few health behavior researchers and practitioners have access to formal SNA education; much of the current training efforts occur outside degree-granting curricula. Therefore, the aims of this paper were to: 1) assess the diffusion of …

Strategies For Successful Long-Distance Mentoring, Annie Nguyen, Scott Rhodes

Health Behavior Research

Mentorship offers benefits to both the mentee and mentor in terms of professional development and productivity. It can take many forms and is not limited to mentee-mentor pairs that are employed at the same institution. Mentoring relationships that span institutions offer an avenue for expanding one’s professional network beyond the local environment. We refer to this type of mentorship as “long-distance mentoring.” We offer four critical strategies and reflections for successful long-distance mentoring based on our experience in the AAHB Research Scholars Mentorship Program.

From The Uplands Of Mindanao: Healing A Fragmented Land And Its People Through An Integral Ecological Approach, J. Andres F. Ignacio

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Upland degradation has been a growing concern in the Philippines in the wake of extensive logging and clearing in the 1970s–1980s. As forests vital to the water supplies of burgeoning communities were depleted, the chances of these areas regenerating were set back by the encroachment of intensive agriculture that extended into the uplands. Genetically modified (GM) corn heavily marketed from the early 2000s onward now dominates the marginal uplands of Northern and Central Mindanao through burning in the dry season, adjacent to remaining forest stands and grasslands. Together with the abuse of the soil in pursuit of economic growth, a …

Global Collaborative Advantage: Efforts Toward Decolonization Of Business Ethics And Management Scholarship, Jessica Ludescher Imanaka

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The current trend of prescribing and enforcing ethical business constructs, models, and frameworks developed in and by the Global North has become a new form of paternalistic colonizing of the Global South. Such behavior dangerously mirrors historically oppressive movements through colonization and continues extractive and damaging practices. Indeed, the enforcement of Northern constructs, models, and frameworks facilitates the maintenance of an artificial global hierarchy which continues to harm the South to the North’s benefit. They overlook and prohibit any possible inclusion of ethical and philosophical frameworks derived from the wisdoms and traditions of the South. This article advances the goal …

Toward A Quintuple Bottom Line In Higher Education Institutions: Sustainability Practices In Higher Education, Abraham Mulamoottil

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

As the “trendsetter in education,” the experiments and experiences of Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies Tiruvalla (MACFAST) already show it to be an exceptional model of education, innovation, and sustainability that leverages the triple bottom line (TBL), focusing on how projects disturb the planet, affect people, and address profit. Yet MACFAST added two more areas of concern—the passion for study and the purpose of life, making for a quintuple bottom line. Such a “MACFASTian” praxis for action and reflection is evident in various projects. For example, MACFAST became the first education institution in India to be fully-powered by solar …

Sustainability Practices In Higher Education: Stakeholder Engagement In Promoting Campus Sustainability, Maria Assunta C. Cuyegkeng, Abigal Marie T. Favis

Universities have a role in changing mindsets toward sustainable development through education, research, and extension work. Despite the ongoing trend in favor of sustainability initiatives, however, they themselves struggle to transform organizational practices in their own contexts, especially when trying to get the administration’s buy-in and establish stakeholder engagement. Ateneo de Manila University in particular used its response to the decrees of General Congregation 35 (Society of Jesus, 2008) of the Society of Jesus to serve as the foundation of its campus sustainability programs, especially with respect to its translation into policies that affect the university’s ecological footprint and stakeholder …
