Intercultural Management Cases For The Business Language Class, Christine Uber Grosse
Global Business Languages
This article explores the use of intercultural management cases as alternative instructional materials in business language courses. These cases use the power of story to teach about successful global leaders who effectively lead across cultures. As the cases engage and inform business language students, they also serve as a valuable resource for teaching language, communication, and culture. Additionally, the cases develop situation analysis and problemsolving skills. Three prominent CEOs serve as examples of intercultural management case subjects for the business language class: Jack Ma of China’s Alibaba, Carlos Ghosn of France and Japan’s Renault-Nissan Alliance, and Ratan Tata of India’s …
Shifting The Curriculum To Language For Specific Purposes, Jennifer L. M. Gerndt
Shifting The Curriculum To Language For Specific Purposes, Jennifer L. M. Gerndt
Global Business Languages
As English emerges as the lingua franca of many international corporations worldwide, academic institutions are erroneously retracting funds from language-learning programs, citing the lack of need or the inability to support nonessentials. With this approach, the true needs of language learners have been neglected. The blame can easily be placed on institutions that misunderstand the additional benefits learners garner while pursuing language studies (i.e., culture). However, it can be argued that the blame is actually that of the language educators who fail to arm themselves with the proper ammunition to argue their side properly. The administrators who decide the fate …

Evans's And Cheevers's Quaker Missionary Travels, Hui-Chu Yu
Evans's And Cheevers's Quaker Missionary Travels, Hui-Chu Yu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Evans's and Cheevers's Quaker Missionary Travels" Hui-chu Yu investigates Katharine Evans's and Sarah Cheevers's account of their experiences as Quaker missionaries in Malta between 1658-1662. For Evans and Cheevers traveling was a mission ordained by god and thus their journey is less a trip for the gratification of exploration than spiritual and physical trials. With a purpose to spread Quaker texts, Evans and Cheevers traveled to different lands such as Ireland and Malta. Although they perceived the hostility toward their belief, they still claimed to be god's handmaids with an aim to preach their religious belief. Their …

In this mixed methods study, hermeneutics was chosen as the qualitative approach to help understand the meanings occupational therapists ascribe to stressful situations at work and how they cope with those situations. Data was collected by conducting focus groups and semi-structured interviews with seven participants. Demands on time, conflict, lack of respect and autonomy emerged as the main …
One Roof Judicial System In Indonesia, Sufiarina Sufiarina, Efa Laela Fakhriah
One Roof Judicial System In Indonesia, Sufiarina Sufiarina, Efa Laela Fakhriah
Indonesia Law Review
Judicial power as an independent and autonomous power must be free from any intervention and power, thus ensuring that judges possess independence and impartiality in handling cases. One of the measures for enhancing the independence and autonomy of the judiciary is by placing it under the one roof judicial arrangement developed by the Supreme Court, both from the judicial as well as the non-judicial technical aspects. Up to the present time, endeavors for bringing the four court jurisdictions under the one roof judicial arrangement developed by the Supreme Court have not been completely materialized, due to the existing dualism in …

Socio-Economic Impacts, Social Inclusion, And Science-Policy Interphase: The Case Of Rice Biotechnology In The Philippines, Antonio P. Contreras
Socio-Economic Impacts, Social Inclusion, And Science-Policy Interphase: The Case Of Rice Biotechnology In The Philippines, Antonio P. Contreras
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The paper argues that the development of biotechnology policies in the Philippines vis-à-vis rice is enabled by structures and processes that are friendly to the furtherance of social inclusion and equity goals. This occurs in the context of attaining rice self-sufficiency amidst a globalized system and is clearly expressed in the relative density of concepts and provisions related to participation, inclusivity, and transparency in all the relevant policy instruments. However, spaces that are opened are vulnerable to a political system that has deep-seated structural flaws and a science community whose financial support from the state is limited and at the …
Leadership Contestations, Succession, And Stability In Malaysia And Indonesia, Yang Razali Kassim
Leadership Contestations, Succession, And Stability In Malaysia And Indonesia, Yang Razali Kassim
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
While Southeast Asia is generally stable, political leadership in two regional states is going through a period of uncertainty. The leaderships in Malaysia and Indonesia are undergoing some stress as they face the challenges of transition. Najib Razak, who was appointed Prime Minister of Malaysia in 2009, is due to call a general election to win his first mandate from the people. Najib’s return to office is likely, though this is not a certainty, as Malaysian politics have become more unpredictable. Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is to step down in 2014 at the end of his second and mandatory …
The Ethnopolitics Of Moro Self-Determination In The Philippines: So Little, Too Late?, Rizal G. Buendia
The Ethnopolitics Of Moro Self-Determination In The Philippines: So Little, Too Late?, Rizal G. Buendia
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The paper re-examines the Moro secessionist movement in the Philippines from the perspective of ethno-politics. Using a hybrid framework, which combines Paul Brass’ and Abner Cohen’s instrumentalist approach to ethnicity on the one hand and Michael Hechter’s and Michael Banton’s rational choice theory on the other hand, the paper argues that the complexity of the current separatist war is not simply due to the weakness of the state but also due to the weakness of the Bangsamoro identity and notion of nationhood. This frailty allows the state to co-opt leaders of the movement and sabotage their legitimate quest for self-governance …
Bangladesh And The Role Of Private Sector: Addressing Digital Divides, Maria Divina Gracia Z. Roldan, Beathe Due
Bangladesh And The Role Of Private Sector: Addressing Digital Divides, Maria Divina Gracia Z. Roldan, Beathe Due
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Access to information and communication technologies (ICT) is seen as a key tool to provide economic growth both in developed and developing countries. Despite public and private ICT initiatives to increase ICT access and usage at a grassroots level, there is still a large digital divide (Norris 2003, Mazzarella 2010). Marginalized sectors in Asia, such as the rural folk, women, and low-income youth, remain unreached by the benefits which ICT is supposed to offer. In this paper, three approaches in Bangladesh to decrease the digital divide are analyzed: Grameenphone’s establishment of Community Information Centers (CICs), Grameenphone’s Village Phone program, and …
