Drinking Water In Egypt: The Effects Of Water On Egyptian’S Health, Aneesa Akbar-Uqdah, Sam Highsmith, Sara Tonsy
The Undergraduate Research Journal
The Nile River, often thought of as the backbone of Egypt, has been source of great sustenance and mobility throughout the years. Due to the failure of a multilayered system, however, Egypt has had difficulty providing its citizens with clean drinking water. This paper examines the perceptions regarding this matter, as well as causes and solutions as provided by experts.
Environmental Justice, Community Empowerment, And The Role Of Lawyers In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Janell Smith, Rachel Spector
Environmental Justice, Community Empowerment, And The Role Of Lawyers In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Janell Smith, Rachel Spector
City University of New York Law Review
Working together toward a common goal often requires mobilizing the strength and energy of many groups of people, all of whom share the same passion for accomplishing that goal. Hurricane Katrina and its devastating effect on the environment and communities in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast has done exactly that, bringing together numerous coalitions of concerned individuals who share the determination to clean up and improve New Orleans and the Gulf region. This Article addresses how lawyers from around the country can work with local advocates on reconstruction efforts in New Orleans in a way that increases, rather than …

The Effects Of Race, Place, Class, And Gender On Instructional Strategies In Kentucky's Seventh Grade Science Classes: Individual And School Level Analyses, Stephen K. Miller, D. Clayton Smith, Larry S. Ennis
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study explored the relationship of student demographics to teaching method in Kentucky’s seventh grade science classrooms for 1997-98, based on performance assessment data (student level N = 21,499; school level N = 264). Students’ perceptions of seven instructional strategies from the KIRIS student questionnaires were placed into three groups: traditional, inquiry-based, and computer. At the student level, these strategies were regressed on race, gender, free/reduced lunch, urbanity of the district, Appalachian status, and Educational Service Region. At the school level, the three approaches were regressed on aggregate school data for these same variables. Findings indicated that demographic factors do …

From Vulnerability To Resiliency: Assessing Impacts And Responses To Disaster, John J. Green, Duane A. Gill, Anna M. Kleiner
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Hurricane Katrina devastated the social, economic, and physical infrastructure of communities along the Gulf Coast, and many organizations responded in a massive effort to meet their needs. Building from a livelihoods theoretical framework emphasizing the vulnerability-resiliency continuum, this research note focuses on informing services provided during post-disaster relief, recovery, and redevelopment. Based on a case study conducted in East Biloxi, Mississippi, we describe a project that included a needs assessment survey and qualitative interviews. Research findings address the expressed needs of community members following the disaster, types of relief and recovery assistance provided to them, and the kinds of social …

From Microscope To The Marriage Contract Of Castile's Trastamara Dynasts Isabel And Fernando: Evidence Of African Berber And Germanic Cultural Fusion, Marsha Robinson
From Microscope To The Marriage Contract Of Castile's Trastamara Dynasts Isabel And Fernando: Evidence Of African Berber And Germanic Cultural Fusion, Marsha Robinson
African Diaspora Archaeology Newsletter
This paper explores aspects of African diasporas beyond the context of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The author examines genetic evidence that calls for a syncretic history of Spain. Exploring the fusion of cultural practices with respect to gender and power as found in the fifteenth-century marriage contract between Isabel of Castile and Fernando of Aragon, this paper further analyzes the historiography of the Christian expansion on the peninsula, the Berber legal system that arrived in Iberia with the Islamic conquest, and the Visigothic legal system that dominated in Aragon. The author further examines evidence of cultural fusion of African Berber …

Tikettin Yat Familia/Once Upon A Family: Family Origins And Slave Histories In Southern Morocco, Madia Thomson
African Diaspora Archaeology Newsletter
Dr. Thomson received her Ph.D. from the Department of History at Boston University in 2005. Her dissertation, entitled "The Historical Present: Modernization, Slavery, and the Transformation of Social Hierarchy in Southwestern Morocco, 1912-1956," addressed aspects of modernization and social change in twentieth-century Morocco through the lens of slavery. Her dissertation argues that the actions of slaves encouraged changes in the institution of slavery that, when combined with the forces of economic modernization, reshaped earlier social configurations. Patron-client relations in Moroccan society mirrored the power structures of the institution of slavery; changes in the institution therefore reflected changes in the political …

Use Of Debt Covenants In Small Firms, Chenchuramaiah T. Bathala, Oswald D. Bowlin, William P. Dukes
Use Of Debt Covenants In Small Firms, Chenchuramaiah T. Bathala, Oswald D. Bowlin, William P. Dukes
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
This paper examines the structure of debt covenants in small firms, with emphasis on privately owned firms. It is based on a survey of a large sample of firms drawn from the S&P Register of Corporations. The findings show that debt covenants imposed on small firms differ according to the firm type (privately owned or publicly owned), debt level, the borrowing cost, and the source of financing (bank or other sources). The evidence is generally consistent with the arguments relating to stockholder-bondholder agency cost conflicts and the Costly Contracting Hypothesis of Smith and Warner (1979).
