Street Noises: Parisian Pleasure, 1900-1940 by Adrian Rifkin and Shanghai on the Métro: Spies, Espionage, and the French Between the Wars by Michael B. Miller are test cases for issues of historiography related to period and duration in the study of France between 1919 and 1940. Of added relevance to these issues is the fact that Rifkin and Miller both question distinctions between elite literary cultures linked to book publishing and new forms of mass reproduction enhanced by technologies of sound reproduction and illustration. This volume, edited by Rolf Kieser and Kurt R. Spillmann, consists of twentyeight essays written by a group of Swiss scholars and officials. Originally intended as a new edition of the 1978 volume Modern Switzerland (edited by J. Murray Luck, Lukas F. The Roman historian Pliny recounts a story that occurred during Periclean Athens. I will utilize this story, as a trope to undertake an interrogation of perception as it is commonly understood and currently practiced by art educators in schools. In order to deconstruct vision/blindness, or the perception/non-perception binary, I have examined the psychoanalytic paradigm of Jacques Lacan. His current interpreters provided the conceptual tools for such an undertaking. Given that the question of representation has become a key sign-post of postmodernism, art educators must conceptualize a trajectory for itself in the 21st century.
