Pro Se Community Clinic Effect On Eviction Diversion, Meltia Hickman, Crystal Bell, Sydney Fisk, Keenan Carroll
Pro Se Community Clinic Effect On Eviction Diversion, Meltia Hickman, Crystal Bell, Sydney Fisk, Keenan Carroll
Utah Conference on Community Engagement
This poster highlights the Eviction Diversion Initiative (EDI), funded by the National Center for State Courts with services provided through Utah Legal Services, and the role of the Pro Se Community Clinic in helping prevent evictions before they reach the courtroom.
The clinic creates a space where tenants and landlords can connect early with attorneys, mediators, and service providers to work toward practical solutions. So far, more than 20,000 individuals have accessed diversion resources across 24 jurisdictions. Among those who engaged with the program, 89% were able to resolve their cases through settlement or dismissal, avoiding a formal eviction judgment.

Uscis-Grounded Ai: Preventing Hallucinations In Immigration Legal Services, Hephzibah Igwe
Uscis-Grounded Ai: Preventing Hallucinations In Immigration Legal Services, Hephzibah Igwe
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Artificial intelligence chatbots increasingly provide legal information to consumers, but AI "hallucinations" (confidently stated but incorrect responses) pose serious risks in immigration law. Incorrect information about USCIS forms, fees, processing times, or filing procedures can result in visa denials, deportation proceedings, or permanent bars to entry.
This research presents a novel "source-grounded AI" system that eliminates hallucinations in immigration legal information. Rather than relying solely on large language models (LLMs) trained on general internet data, the system uses USCIS.gov as the primary source of truth for all operational data including current forms, fees, processing times, filing addresses, and policy updates. …

Legal Design For Legal Aid: Rethinking Inclusivity And Trust In The Digital Age, Luodan Liang, Liuxi Jiang, Zhang Linghao
IASDR Conference Series
Against the backdrop of rapid digital development, legal aid services are undergoing a profound transformation from a system-oriented approach to a people-centered approach. While emerging digital legal aid platforms have shown initial success in resource matching, service efficiency, and diverse access, over reliance on institutional logic and technological layering has left vulnerable groups facing issues such as a lack of inclusivity and trust in actual use. This paper introduces the concept of Legal Design, emphasizing the critical role of human-centered design thinking in enhancing the in clu siv it yand trustworthiness of legal aid services. Through literature reviews, process analysis, …

Movement Legacies And Lessons - Moderator: Scott Titshaw, Suzanne Goldberg, Shannon Minter, Adelina Nicholls
Mercer Law Review Symposium
Forty years ago, civil rights legend Bayard Rustin described lessons from other civil rights movements that, at the time, seemingly could inform gay rights activists in the 1980s. More recently, Evan Wolfson, an architect of the freedom-to-marry movement, has outlined several lessons of that movement that could be applied by activists in other fields, ranging from Palestinian peacemakers to transgender rights activists. Some activists may embrace these lessons, while others may passionately reject them. This panel seeks to explore how various civil rights movements have learned and borrowed from each other over time, possibly carving out lessons for current and …

This panel will likely discuss the extent future viability of the Obergefell legacy in light of recent Supreme Court decisions, such as Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and Department of State v. Muñoz, which have retreated from both the substantive due process jurisprudence that underpinned Obergefell and the traditionally robust understanding of constitutional marriage rights. This continuing viability may rely on alternative rationales such as stare decisis, equal protection, or even religion clause principles. Panelists might also choose to discuss recent First Amendment jurisprudence as it threatens to narrow the rights of same-sex spouses.

The Family Law Legacy Of The Freedom-To-Marry Movement - Moderator: Bonnie Carlson, Jessica Feinberg, Tanya Monique Washington, Marcia A. Zug
Mercer Law Review Symposium
The freedom-to-marry movement sparked sometimes unintended reactions, including accelerated legal recognition of nonmarital partners and new, alternative legal institutions, such as domestic partnerships, civil unions, and reciprocal beneficiaries. This panel will likely explore this path and the resilience of these legal innovations for same- and different-sex couples. Obergefell and its progeny, Pavan v. Smith, have also raised family law questions that have yet to be definitively resolved, such as the constitutionality of discrimination in parentage presumptions between same- and different-sex spouses. Finally, the panel might also address possible legal recognition for polyamorous relationships, which have been discussed since Obergefell …

SITIE Symposiums
In session six of the SITIE 2025 Symposium, the panelists discuss how legal institutions in the State of Washington are responding to the challenges surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). Being aware that AI is continuing to evolve and will inevitably be integrated more into the legal field, this session discusses the benefits and concerns of AI and what legal institutions like the Board of Judicial Administration, Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) Committee on Professional Ethics, and the Washington State Bar Association Legal Technology Task Force are doing to educate lawyers and what changes, if any, are being done to address AI …

Granting Rights To Nature: Environmental Personhood In The U.S. And Worldwide, Daxton W. Summers
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
This project explores the concept of granting legal personhood to natural environments, with a focus on the Clark Fork River in Missoula, Montana. Granting legal personhood rights to the environment has been used around the world to recognize and protect rivers, mountains, and other environmental entities. However, the U.S. legal systems have been slow to adopt this approach. This research essay examines why the U.S. has been lagging, analyzes foreign legal frameworks that have granted personhood to environmental entities and examines if any could be adapted to grant rights and protections to the Clark Fork River.
The research process involves …

Exploring Sensory Ethnography In Open Inquiry: What Does River Want Me To Know?, Marianne (Ria) Jago
Talking Heads Seminar Series
This presentation features a creative and narrative research approach to research relationality and wisdom-seeking with place. A multi-modal practice-based approach will be outlined as a pathway that can be developed by people of any background. Through transdisciplinary methods in sensory ethnography and creative geography, I notice my sensed relatedness, or entanglement, with the cosmological Being of River. Deeply influenced by Indigenous listening methods I understand sensory engagement with River as ecologically essential research, and describe a practice-based pathway to learn from, and to "think with” water.
This research responds to the invitations of Indigenous Elders, and "wild" places, to listen …

Signs, Gateways, And Landscaping … Oh My!, George Mccue, Dimas Prasetya
Purdue Road School
Cities and towns want to welcome highway travelers with gateway signs or aesthetics. Whether that’s part of a road project or a standalone proposal, a key to proper planning is understanding safety-based limitations on what can be placed on state ROW and where. Even off- ROW, there are laws governing nearby visible signage. We’ll cover INDOT’s Public Art and Landscaping Policy, FHWA’s role, and the federal Highway Beautification Act.
