Art therapy involves the use of art representations in clinical and mental health care. Art mediums such as painting, dance, and movement can be interventions for diagnoses such as gynecological or breast cancer (GBC). GBC incidence is highest among women 45-65, and art therapy has shown potential to improve their quality of life (QoL). Art therapy’s impact on QoL is often assessed by measuring physical and mental health, coping and adjustment capabilities, healthcare relationships, and social life. Our NICU started a journey of interdisciplinary collaboration, employee education standardization, patient care standardization, and peer coaching for the patient families. Throughout our journey we have been able to decrease our length of stay from 37.6 days in 2014 to about 16 days in 2018.

The aim of this panel is to present an emerging if not visionary approach to caring for patients with neurodegenerative disorders. We will present the thesis work of Laurie Smith “A New Approach to Dementia Care Including Visual Cues and Person-Centered Activities” and Paula Reardon-Webster “Cultivating Compassion as a Tool for Everyday Leadership”. Using research and personal experience, the presenters will consider the possibilities of applying mindfulness-based leadership to provide compassionate care in memory care settings. This session will appeal to students of compassionate care, creative therapies, and applications of mindfulness practice.

Poetry, Paintings, And A Short Story: Humanities Foster Success In Developing Clinical Reasoning Skills, Josette Brodhead, Patricia M. Burke

This quasi-experimental, nonrandomized pre-/post-test study examined the impact of humanities-based teaching and learning strategies on the development of critical-thinking and clinical-reasoning skills among BSN students enrolled in a maternal/newborn nursing course. Results indicated that the humanities-based approaches significantly impact the development of clinical reasoning skills (p < .05).
