Biblical Duty And Government, Katherine Musgrove
Biblical Duty And Government, Katherine Musgrove
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
Christian duty toward government and what it entails has been debated many times. There are arguments that say the church’s main focus should be on influencing and being involved in governmental affairs, and there are arguments that Christians should just stay out of politics. However, from a Biblical perspective, what does the relationship truly look like between a Christian and the government? Is there a Biblical obligation to be involved in government? Looking at the Bible as well as other primary and scholarly sources, most evidence leads to a more balanced opinion that it is wise for people to be …

Relationship Of Media And Information Literacy And The Ability To Spot Political Misinformation Among Learners In Shs In San Nicholas Iii, Bacoor City, Maria Theresa Navo, Elarcie Balsomo
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
The prevalence of political misinformation among learners in the Philippines is seen as a serious threat to democracy. The study was conducted to determine if there is a relationship between media and information literacy and the ability to spot political misinformation among learners in SHS in San Nicholas III, Bacoor City. Correlational-descriptive research design was used in the study. Three hundred fifty-two learners were used as respondents of this study. The socio-demographic profile of the learners in terms of sex, grade level, and strand were gathered. The media and information literacy rate of the learners and their ability to spot …
The Polarization Of Political Parties And The American Republic, Patricia Cazeau
The Polarization Of Political Parties And The American Republic, Patricia Cazeau
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
In the modern age of the 24-hour news cycle and social media, misinformation is rampant, and tensions are high. With a constant barrage of information coming from either direction, political opinions grow in number, and often in opposition to one another. This widens the fissure between the two major political parties in America, the conservative Republican, and liberal Democratic parties. Based on a study of 11 countries, including the United States, political polarization threatens democracies by creating political “tribes” that subscribe to groupthink, a harmful ideology that uplifts one school of thought while condemning others. In addition to having violent …
Political Compromise In America: Why Are Americans So Politically Divided And What Can Be Done To Prevent A Fractured Nation, Zachary Cary
Political Compromise In America: Why Are Americans So Politically Divided And What Can Be Done To Prevent A Fractured Nation, Zachary Cary
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
Ask anyone who is politically active what they believe to be the biggest problem in politics today. More often than not, Americans tend to blame the failing parts of society on the stubbornness of the opposing political party. This generally opens up the floor to asking questions about whether individuals are willing to listen to members of the opposing party discuss their points of view, and unfortunately, many will choose not to listen at all, having already decided that they are wrong and there is no possibility of coming to a middle ground between the two points of view. People …

Political Rhetoric And Civility: A Challenge To “The Legacy Of ‘Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Happiness’”, Timothy P. O'Brien, Melissa O. Stewart
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
“As you stand for your values do so with gentleness and respect—that’s how we move our country forward.”
Mike Pence, 48th Vice President of the United States of America (2017-2021)
Since the founding of the United States of America, political discourse has often taken an unpleasant and nasty tone. Partisan disagreement concerning public policy is normal and policy should be the subject of vigorous debate. Disagreement, bickering, and even fights on the floor of Congress, are not new phenomena. However, today there is a growing sense in the country that civility and intolerance are on the rise. This study …
The Modern Relationship Between Music And Political Preferences, Teresa Martin
The Modern Relationship Between Music And Political Preferences, Teresa Martin
Student Symposium
Music and politics have been interconnected for centuries, and it is difficult to explain a political event without mentioning the contemporary music creation and vice versa; examples include anti-war music during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, a shift to country music with patriotic undertones after 9/11, and so on. Preliminary research suggests that there could be a connection between political ideologies and liking genres of music, but it is relatively outdated (Fox and Williams 1974). There is research surrounding how political polarization contributes to opposing attitudes and preferences (Sears and Valentino 1997, Prinz 2021), and how music has different origins …

From sending election reminders home by a kindergartener, to including local school board meetings on school newsletter and calendars, attendees will take away practical tips and tools to restore faith in the younger generation's ability to improve our democracy.
The Extent To Which Tiktok Has Become A New Platform For Political Expression: An Analysis Of Us Public Opinion, Social Media, Celebrity Endorsements And Youth Voting Behavior, Jill Shaughnessy
Capstone Showcase
Tiktok has a function in society to act as a platform of political identity and expression. This thesis aims to find out if its growth is correlated to youth voting behavior and politics, specifically how does the consumption of mass media and the exposure of social networks like Tiktok influence youth voting behavior and public opinion in modern elections and act as platforms for political expression? Employing the analytic method of process tracing, my research illustrates how young people found a political identity with groupthink structures, were mobilized to vote with initiatives and celebrities and used social media to speak …

Attempting To Resist Ontological Occupation When Designing For Scale In Healthcare, Josina Vink, Felicia Nilsson, Thiago Freitas, Shivani Prakash
Attempting To Resist Ontological Occupation When Designing For Scale In Healthcare, Josina Vink, Felicia Nilsson, Thiago Freitas, Shivani Prakash
Nordes Conference Series
Scholars have recently called out how design is complicit in ontological occupation, where one reality makes other realities non-existent. The perpetuation of ontological occupation is a particular risk when designing for scale in healthcare, as Western healthcare is a recognized carrier of modern universalist practices that threaten local ways of caring. In this research, we draw from science and technology studies and anthropology to inform a research through design study positioned within a collective effort to scaleup decentralized care models in Norway. We analyse five attempts at resisting ontological occupation through design and, by doing so, contribute with lessons for …
The Rise Of The Far-Right In Italy, Justin Lewis
The Rise Of The Far-Right In Italy, Justin Lewis
Capstone Showcase
The rising influence of far-right extremism in mainstream politics has been an issue the world over. From the U.S. to Brazil, this phenomenon is causing a shift in the ways in which governments are run. There may not be a better example than in Italy, where far-right parties have come to power democratically and continue to gain popularity. This thesis aims to explore and explain the underlying reasons behind the surge of the far-right to power in Italy. An emphasis is placed on going beyond superficial reasons such as rising levels of immigration to give a more complete story.
Maintenance Of A Gambling Monopoly In The Eu: Finland’S Gambling Policy As A Case, Jani Selin Ph.D.
Maintenance Of A Gambling Monopoly In The Eu: Finland’S Gambling Policy As A Case, Jani Selin Ph.D.
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
The EU Member States in general have striven to comply with Court of Justice of the European Union rulings while holding on to their national regulatory power as far as possible. The Finnish gambling policy is an example. The analysis is based on case law and policy documents. The results of the analysis point to the interpretation that Finland has successfully contained the EU’s politico-legal influence on its national gambling policy and to a great extent kept regulatory power in its own hands. It is suggested that the development of the Finnish gambling policy in relation to the EU from …
History, Security, And Peace: A Comparison Of Sectarian Conflicts In Northern Ireland And The Middle East, Ahmed I. Hamed, Noah Chamberlain Spicer
History, Security, And Peace: A Comparison Of Sectarian Conflicts In Northern Ireland And The Middle East, Ahmed I. Hamed, Noah Chamberlain Spicer
Student Symposium
“The Troubles,” a violent conflict that began in Northern Ireland in 1968 and lasted until the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, saw high levels of violence and terrorism on both sides--Protestants and Catholics--of the socio-political conflict. While major issues of violence were addressed by the Good Friday Agreement, many key ontological issues remain very much alive and active, resulting in “peace walls” which separate Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods in Northern Ireland. The impediments to peace stem not just from these issues of violence, but also from the minimal attention paid to ontological security in peace negotiations: the security of oneself, …
General Campus Climate From A Conservative Student Perspective, Sarah Mattick
General Campus Climate From A Conservative Student Perspective, Sarah Mattick
Student Symposium
Campus Climate Research studies how students and others in a college community feel about the climate of their institutions, especially how the climate facilitates learning, growth, and expression. Typically, this research has been applied to diversity concerns, especially in the decades after affirmative action became a common practice in higher education admissions. My research adds to this literature, because in the midst of creating a campus community and campus climate that is sensitive and in alliance with the needs of marginalized students, institutions will often find that a struggle occurs between the needs of marginalized students and the perceived neglect …
The Relationship Between The Accessibility Of Political Attitudes And Voting Behavior, Alison I. Young
The Relationship Between The Accessibility Of Political Attitudes And Voting Behavior, Alison I. Young
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Eighty-five Olivet students (57 women) participated for extra credit in a study focused on the relationship between the accessibility of one's attitudes toward political parties (Democrats vs. Republicans) and political decisions (e.g., likelihood to vote for a given candidate). Participants viewed a series of Democrat-related (e.g., left-leaning, liberal) and Republican-related (e.g., right-leaning, conservative) terms piloted for political orientation. For each, they were asked to indicate as quickly and accurately as possible whether they liked or disliked it. The speed of their response served as a measure of attitude accessibility. Participants then completed a series of questions regarding their political orientation, …

New Media In Kosovo – The Subliminal Megaphone Of Deliberate Political Messages, Gjylije Rexha
New Media In Kosovo – The Subliminal Megaphone Of Deliberate Political Messages, Gjylije Rexha
UBT International Conference
The new media are the newest platform serving the creation of a pseudo-environment that is desirable by the political factors in Kosovo. This paper elaborates the impact on the quality of political news of such reporting model that substitutes the principles of impartiality, objectivity, accuracy and so on, with the ready-made news by the political actors. As the content analyses and semi-structured interviews with journalists indicates, the traditional principles of journalism in covering politics have been reduced to transmitting in full the political statements, thus straying from the quest for the truth and from reporting on the political realities. By …
Experiments In The Co-Creation Of "Theatres" For Social Innovation: A Reading Through The Lens Of Hannah Arendt, Elisa Bertolotti, Virginia Tassinari
Experiments In The Co-Creation Of "Theatres" For Social Innovation: A Reading Through The Lens Of Hannah Arendt, Elisa Bertolotti, Virginia Tassinari
Nordes Conference Series
This paper explores how the authors are currently experimenting in bringing philosophical insights into dialogue with their design practices. Specifically, they are analyzing how concepts from Hannah Arendt’s The Human Condition - such as those of “theatres” and “heroes” - have inspired their research within a project called “Welcome to Seraing”. The idea of active citizenship powered by this project has been inspired by the idea of “hero” described by Arendt: i.e. to be an active player in society, discussing together and making decisions about the common sphere, and bringing these decisions into action. By doing so, the actors involved …

Celebration of Learning
This project aimed to study attitudes towards gender inequalities in politics, both in the United States and India. Using original survey research and World Values Survey data, American and Indian attitudes towards women in politics were analyzed and compared. Ultimately, the project found that respondents in both countries still hold distinctly unequal views on women in the political sphere.
A Bloody Affair: Thomas Boleyn’S Political Influence On The English Religious Reformation, Jessica Meadows
A Bloody Affair: Thomas Boleyn’S Political Influence On The English Religious Reformation, Jessica Meadows
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
This research looks at the life of Thomas Boleyn, the father of Anne Boleyn the first publically executed Queen of England. In this research, I will argue that Thomas Boleyn used his political and personal influence to begin the religious reformation in England. He first attempted to sway Henry VIII with his eldest daughter, Mary, and failed. He next attempted to gain the kings attention with his younger daughter, Anne, and there he succeeded. His families political influence triggered the split between England and the Catholic Church and left the Protestant Nation surrounded by Catholic enemies. I will argue that …

DRS Biennial Conference Series
Sustainability and its subsequent transformations are a global challenge. In this paper, the focus lies on demonstrating a way to break down these global issues into its micro-elements which can be dealt with in the individual’s private sphere. Everyday life has always been where practices and its inherent conflicts between ‹rational and irrational› can be rooted. Design can provide the tools to make the familiar visible and the intuitive communicable through questioning the ‹normal› and offering alternative scenarios. We add to this, that a mixture of participatory and qualitative methods can guide an investigation, producing an array of multi-faceted information. …

A former dean at Kansas Law and a renowned historian of colonial and pre-Civil War America, Professor Michael H. Hoeflich is also a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He explored the publication history of More's UTOPIA, and the extent to which editions of the book were available in antebellum America. Professor Hoeflich noted that the novel, as a work of "politics," was well known by the likes of Jefferson, Madison, and John Adams, but its influence thereafter ebbed and …

The second UTOPIA500 presentation was Feb. 11, 2016. Daniel J. Morrissey, Professor of Law and Dean emeritus at Gonzaga University School of Law, received an official "Me and Tommy More" polo shirt from Dr. Malloy at the beginning of the talk. Professor Morrissey then spoke about More's Utopia and Income Inequality. A published scholar of corporate securities law and jurisprudence, Professor Morrissey identified legal, political, and moral issues about social and economic inequality in late medieval England, as reflected in More's Utopia, and discussed the continuing relevance of those issues today. He sparked an animated discussion with the Law and …
