Grasslands, Communicating The Benefits, D. Keeney Dec 2021

Grasslands, Communicating The Benefits, D. Keeney

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The multiple benefits of perennial agriculture , including forages and grasslands, for building soil quality, protection of natural resources, enhancement of biodiversity and wildlife, are well known to us, but little understood by the public. This is not a situation where “more education” would necessarily increase recognition. Rather, we must build in the public a desire for the enhancement of green space, clean water and air, and diverse landscapes that multiple purpose agriculture can bring. We seek such environments intuitively and now that much of the world’s people are “trapped” in urban settings of steel and concrete, this desire is …

Back To The Future – Pastoral Land Use In A Forest Land – Sustainability Challenges For The 21St Century, J. Morgan Williams

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

To contribute meaningfully to a session entitled “Deforestation” with a proposed paper title of “Trees in Pastoral Zones; Landuse Standards in the 21st Century” necessitates I carefully define the scope of my contribution. My paper will draw on my experiences as an ecologist working in the pastoral lands of New Zealand in roles that have led me to delve increasingly into what constitutes sustainability (of people, land and economy) for a tiny multicultural nation maturing amidst the remnants of a unique Gondwanaland ecosystem. As New Zealand’s Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE) I now examine a very wide range …

A Brief History Of The Making Of An Astronaut, Sharon J. Kulali

Ideas: Exhibit Catalog for the Honors College Visiting Scholars Series

With more advancement in technology, recreational travel to space is increasingly becoming common. This raises the question of whether all individuals who travel to space are considered astronauts. In this paper, the astronaut requirements that the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has had throughout the years are broken down. Furthermore, renowned former astronaut, Colonel Richard O. Covey, is used as an example to demonstrate these requirements.

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Dayton’s Committee on the Place-Based Two-Generation Approach to Poverty completed a working paper titled “A Call for Community Long-Term Recovery Plan” in January of 2021, arguing for an approach to recovery that is strategic, efficient, equity-focused, and regional. Practitioners and theorists connected to this document will address challenges and opportunities for addressing the rights of children in this area, particularly addressing the ways a regional approach can help to dismantle the legacy of historical injustices as we try to build back better.

Does Human Rights Derogation Limit Covid-19 Infections?, Brian K. Gran, Reema Sen Dec 2021

Does Human Rights Derogation Limit Covid-19 Infections?, Brian K. Gran, Reema Sen

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

The purpose of this project is to model and understand socio-legal responses to the spread of COVID-19—in particular, emergency measures that derogate from states’ human rights commitments. Derogation of human rights in response to COVID-19 is unprecedented, according to some experts (Scheinin 2020). This project investigates whether combinations of conditions, such as moderate human rights derogation in combination with strong health infrastructures, reduce degrees of virus transmission and promote prevention. Its preliminary findings indicate that suspension of some rights appears crucial to limiting COVID-19 infections, but suspension of many rights has limited impacts, raising questions for practices of human rights …

Developing Soft Skills With Interdisciplinary Teams In The First Year: Lessons Learned, Christian Rogers Nov 2021

Developing Soft Skills With Interdisciplinary Teams In The First Year: Lessons Learned, Christian Rogers

Symposium on Education in Entertainment and Engineering

The academic structure of most universities dictates that a student work with those of their own program and in conjunction with a program that is tangential to theirs. Interdisciplinary educational experiences that provide students with the opportunity to develop soft skills (such as communication, empathy and problem solving) are considered rare but are much more common in the working environment. As an example, working environments such as Universal Creative are comprised of multiple disciplines (i.e. civil engineer, mechanical engineering, illustration, user experience design, etc.) A function of working in an interdisciplinary team can also be to work on unknown or …

Community-Driven Repository Infrastructure Programs At Lyrasis—An Overview, Paolo P. Gujilde, Sheila Rabun, Hannah Rosen

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

Academic libraries, and institutional repositories in particular, play a key role in the ongoing quest for ways to gather metrics and connect the dots between researchers and research contributions in order to measure “institutional impact,” while also streamlining workflows to reduce administrative burden. Identifying accurate metrics and measurements for illustrating “impact” is a goal that many academic research institutions share, but these goals can only be met to the extent that all organizations across the research and scholarly communication landscape are using best practices and shared standards in research infrastructure. For example, persistent identifiers (PIDs) such as ORCID iDs (Open …

The Health Sciences Library at New York Medical College has made its annual Faculty Author Celebration and Awards event a tradition 27 years-running. Over the last quarter century, the event has evolved with the digital age, finding an archival home in our institution’s digital repository, Touro Scholar, beginning in 2018. While we have used Touro Scholar to publish our annual awards list, depict the event in photos, and of course collect New York Medical College faculty publications - 2020 was the first year that our repository has been used to host the Faculty Author Celebration and Awards event itself. We …

Evidence Based Im Injection Practice, Sarah Simpson, Amanda Bailey Nov 2021

Evidence Based Im Injection Practice, Sarah Simpson, Amanda Bailey

Scholars Week

Abstract

This evidence-based study of literature investigated best IM injection practice. The review was based on evidence from 3 main sources, all found on the CINAHL database. The three studies were reviewed and assessed, and best practice was found to be recommended. The first article found that several healthcare workers use different methods and techniques when administering IM injections, this leads to incorrect administration or injections not evidence based. The second article found that in order administer IM injections effectively, 5mm penetration into the muscle is needed. Therefore, skin bunching is not recommended for the reasoning that it creates a …

A New Approach To Bedside Nursing: Bedside Reporting, Regan Hancock, Samantha Mcclure Nov 2021

A New Approach To Bedside Nursing: Bedside Reporting, Regan Hancock, Samantha Mcclure

Scholars Week

End of shift reporting in our chosen hospital has shown a level of unorganization and ineffectiveness. Currently, the practice is that the nursing staff are seated in or around the desk allowing for interruptions from phones, families, and other staff members. Interruptions like these allow for misinterpretation and communication errors which could lead to a decrease in a patient’s outcome and safety. Through utilization of three different theoretical frameworks along with evaluation of several meta-analysis and research based articles, we evaluated the effectiveness of bedside handoff reporting. The evidence is in favor of bedside handoff reporting. Therefore, the hospital should …

Abstract:

Utilizing and integrating best evidence-based research to improve nursing care is a core responsibility of a nurse. Implementing best nursing practices leads to better patient outcomes and patient experiences. Through research, specific interventions that can reduce the incidence of delirium in critically ill patients were uncovered. Through utilization of theoretical framework, and multiple evidence-based research articles, a protocol was formed to initiate in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Murray-Calloway County Hospital in Murray, KY. This protocol consists of a multi-component intervention plan to hopefully decrease incidence of ICU delirium.

Organizational Accidents And The Swiss Cheese Model: Learning From Air France Flight 447, Kevin Batz, Scott Masse, William Taylor, Matthew Soja, Trevor Todd-Stone Nov 2021

Organizational Accidents And The Swiss Cheese Model: Learning From Air France Flight 447, Kevin Batz, Scott Masse, William Taylor, Matthew Soja, Trevor Todd-Stone

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

James Reason’s Swiss-Cheese Model contends that complex systems are protected by multiple defensive layers designed to prevent hazards and system failures from evolving into accidents. These overlapping barriers protect complex technological systems, such as the aviation industry, against accidents. This model proposes that all accidents include a combination of both active failures and latent conditions. Active failures are unsafe acts, including errors and violations, that are generally associated with front-line personnel (e.g. pilots) which could result in injuries and/or damage to equipment. Latent conditions are those that exist in the aviation system well before a damaging outcome is experienced and …

Emerging Cultural Place-Keeping Initiatives In Historic Communities Threatened By Gentrification And Displacement, Maren Neldam Nov 2021

Emerging Cultural Place-Keeping Initiatives In Historic Communities Threatened By Gentrification And Displacement, Maren Neldam

Shared Knowledge Conference

Amid unprecedented economic pressures, the distinct cultural landscape of urban neighborhoods is increasingly threatened. Low income communities of color are feeling the impacts of urban redevelopment, rising rents, and incompatible adjacent uses most acutely. Affordable housing, light manufacturing, bodegas, barbershops, and community organizations are rapidly being replaced with luxury condos, co-work offices, urban spas, art galleries, and high-end restaurants. My research situates decades of these types of neighborhood change dynamics within historical trends of urban planning, calls attention to the expressions of neighborhood cultural identity at risk of erasure, and highlights emerging practices of cultural placekeeping within the community development …
