Differentiation Of Solutions Of Second-Order Bvps With Integral Boundary Conditions, Alfredo Janson, Bibi Juman Dec 2013

Differentiation Of Solutions Of Second-Order Bvps With Integral Boundary Conditions, Alfredo Janson, Bibi Juman

Mathematics Colloquium Series

Janson’s and Juman’s research involves differentiating solutions of boundary value problems with integral conditions, as well as showing that the resulting functions solve an associated boundary value problem—called the variational equation—with new integral boundary values.

Everything In Moderation: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Rowena H. Scott, Bev Ewens, Lesley Andrew Nov 2013

Everything In Moderation: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Rowena H. Scott, Bev Ewens, Lesley Andrew

eCULTURE

This discussion paper describes the review and development of a standardised moderation of assessment process in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. This initiative was the result of collaboration between two nursing course coordinators and a Centre for Learning and Development academic who provided the scholarship of moderation of assessments. A review of the current moderation processes revealed the potential for variation amongst markers especially due to the large number of new and sessional academic staff. A recommendation from the review was the need for a moderation process that provides evidence for reporting and is not difficult for academic staff …

Develop A Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Sids) Education Package In Jordan: Using Participatory Action Research Approach To Create Ripple Of Change, Shereen Hamadneh, Jehan Hamadneh Nov 2013

Develop A Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Sids) Education Package In Jordan: Using Participatory Action Research Approach To Create Ripple Of Change, Shereen Hamadneh, Jehan Hamadneh

eCULTURE

IInfant mortality is high in Jordan, a developing country in the Middle East, at 19 per 1000 live births. Most mortality risk factors are preventable. The SIDS incidence rate has also been extrapolated as 11.22 per 1000 live births [1]. This is much higher than the United State of America (USA), a developed country (0.54 per 1000 live births) [2]. Most of modifiable SIDS risk factors can be reduced by increasing knowledge, change behaviors and practices regarding SIDS risks and prevention measures.

There has not been a major investment in educating Jordanians about SIDS. Heath care providers are identified …

Moocs, Learning Analytics And Learning Advisors, Ron Monson, Diane Bunney, Teresa Lawrence Nov 2013

Moocs, Learning Analytics And Learning Advisors, Ron Monson, Diane Bunney, Teresa Lawrence

eCULTURE

The advent of Massive Open Online Courses has been variously described as heralding the end of the modern university or alternatively, an over-hyped re-badging of existing online content whose advantages have already been realised. Appeals to ideology however, have typically characterised coverage of both polarities rather than hard evidence; in particular, there has been much less analysis on just how learning outcomes are impacted by either “face-to-face” interaction or online/digital environment. Less dichotomously and even more rarely addressed is perhaps a more pertinent question: What blending of the two learning modes works best and in what circumstances? In this paper …

The Microstructure And Rheology Of Carbon Nanotube Suspensions, Anson W.K. Ma Nov 2013

The Microstructure And Rheology Of Carbon Nanotube Suspensions, Anson W.K. Ma

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have a diameter on the nanometer scale and a length on the micrometer or even centimeter scale. The high aspect ratio of CNTs implies only a small CNT loading (typically < 0.1 wt%) is needed to achieve conductive pathways, offering a unique competitive advantage for using CNTs as conductive fillers for polymers. However, the very same feature of CNTs also poses a processing challenge. To this end, understanding the microstructure and rheology of CNTs dispersed within a polymer matrix is critical to processing CNTs into functional materials in a scalable and controllable manner. In the first part of the presentation, I will highlight our experimental observations and modeling of the rheology of two different classes of CNTs: (1) CNTs that aggregate and (2) CNTs that do not aggregate in flow. The shear and extensional flow behavior of these two classes of CNTs will be compared and contrasted. In the second part of the presentation, preliminary findings on the microstructure and rheology of CNTs adsorbed at an air-water interface will be presented. The findings may have implications on the development of more stable emulsions and the production of CNT thin films with controllable packing density and orientational ordering.

W&L Law Fall Scholarship Celebration 2013, Nora V. Demleitner Nov 2013

W&L Law Fall Scholarship Celebration 2013, Nora V. Demleitner

Library Events

On November 14, 2013, the Washington and Lee Law Library hosted a first-of-its-kind Fall Scholarship Celebration. The event took place in the Law Library's main reading room from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

On display were dozens of scholarly articles, books, chapters, and amicus briefs authored by the W&L Law faculty and student body during 2012 and 2013, with hundreds of additional works accessible online through the Scholarly Commons institutional repository.

Faculty, librarians, staff, and administrators mingled with law students over hors d'oeuvres and wine to peruse the formidable scholarly output of the W&L Law community. Spouses, alumni, faculty from …

Personal Genomics: Good, Evil, Or Both?, Emily Schmitt Nov 2013

Personal Genomics: Good, Evil, Or Both?, Emily Schmitt

CAHSS Intellectual Conversations

With the increasing availability of personal genomic testing, there have been warnings that the results may lead to discrimination by insurance companies, employers, or the community. In addition, some individuals fear potential identity theft and loss of personal autonomy, despite the benefits of discovering potential genetic risks and possibilities of more-focused treatments. This lecture will examine whether personal genomics is good, evil, or both.
