Islamic Themes In Us Hip-Hop Culture, Anders Ackfeldt
Music & Performance in Muslim Contexts
Explores how Islam is produced in American hip-hop culture by both Muslims and non-Muslims
Islam has been a part of hip-hop culture since it sprang from New York’s street culture in the 1970s. Today hip-hop has evolved into a global artform with a diversity of Muslim Islamic discourses expressed. Using tools from the field of social semiotics, this book examines how Islamic themes feature in US hip-hop culture, maintaining a particular awareness that both Muslims as well as non-Muslims participate in their production.
Anders Ackfeldt analyses a collection of lyrics, sounds and images to show how Islamic themes are featured …

CBMR Collection Guides / Finding Aids
William Thomas Dargan is a published ethnomusicologist and an elder in the United Methodist Church, retired from teaching Music at Fisk University and St. Augustine’s College. Dargan grew up listening to Dr. Isaac Watts' hymn singing as well as rhythm and blues. His collection holds audio musical examples that accompany the written text in his book, Lining Out The Word, and field recordings of spirituals and hymns discussed in his work. The term “lining out” is a form of a cappella hymn-singing where a leader sings or chants each line of a hymn before the congregation sings it together.

Expanding The Bibliographic Palette: Diversifying The Binghamton University Libraries Fine Arts Collection, Ari Hoffman
Research Days Posters 2025
The classical music canon, often emphasizing Western Art Music, remains the primary focus of academic music curricula. As a result, academic library collections may omit materials presenting diverse global musical traditions and cultures. In light of the emphasis on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in 21st century academic libraries, it is crucial to decolonize fine arts collections to allow exposure to underrepresented composers and marginalized musical communities. This research project explores strategies for diversifying the Fine Arts Collection at Bartle Library, aiming to reflect a broader range of cultural, historical, and artistic perspectives. Providing access to materials relating to African …

About:
Traditionally, mariachi was predominantly an oral and aural tradition, but the genre has developed into a much larger ensemble with expanded instrumentation and more complex arrangements, making notation necessary. The transcription and notation of mariachi music present their own set of challenges, particularly in representing its defining complex musical characteristics.
Adolfo Estrada is an Inclusive Excellence Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Music at UNM. His research focuses on historical and contemporary mariachi …

Playing Changes: Music As Mediator Between Japanese And Black Americans, E Taylor Atkins
Playing Changes: Music As Mediator Between Japanese And Black Americans, E Taylor Atkins
Faculty Books & Book Chapters
Since the mid-twentieth century, music has played a central role in encounters and interactions between the people of Japan and those of African descent. It proved far more effective for pro- moting interracial dialogue and understanding than efforts in the early 1900s to foster an alliance against white supremacy and imperialism. This essay unpacks the ways that encounters with Black music transformed Japanese musicking and generated knowledge and empathy for people of African descent among Japanese. Personal interactions between Black and Japanese musicians constituted a process of “grassroots globalization” that circumvented the dominance of American mass media in representing African …

Although the trope of silenced mariachis was common in early COVID-19 news stories about Los Angeles County, many mariachis were actively performing and supporting community wellbeing between 2020 and 2022. This talk discusses pre-existing sociopolitical challenges and reflects on the pandemic's traumatic impact on Mexican Americans in the region.
Dr. Vallejo's research areas focus on mariachi, music education, and Indigenous cultural-linguistic revitalization. She co-produced Smithsonian Folkways’ 2013 release ¡Así Kotama!: The Flutes of Otavalo, Ecuador. Making American Opera After Einstein, Ryan Ebright Dr.
Making American Opera After Einstein, Ryan Ebright Dr.
ICS Fellow Lectures
In the wake of the avant-garde opera Einstein on the Beach in 1976, opera in the United States experienced a renaissance, one which has continued to the present. My book project, Making American Opera after Einstein, centers on contemporary attempts to remake opera in an American image. In it, I detail how American opera—as a genre, a sphere of cultural institutions, an expression of national identity—has transformed significantly over the past four decades. Whereas many composers embrace operatic convention, tailoring their operas to audiences through adaptations of cherished American stories, others attempt to test the genre’s aesthetic boundaries. By exploring …
