Complexation between sulfonated polystyrene ionomers and bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate
sodium salt (aerosol OT, AOT) surfactant molecules in m-xylene was studied by ultracentrifugation, vapor
pressure osmometry, viscometry, and dynamic light scattering. When the dilute ionomer solution is mixed
with the AOT soluti6n, complexation takes place for both the slightly aggregated state of AOT and reversed
micelles of AOT containing water. In the presence of excess AOT molecules, some of the AOT are free from
the ionomers, and there are well-defined limiting compositions for complexes of the ionomer and AOT and
for those of the ionomer and AOT micelles. The limiting composition depends …

Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering (Saxs) Studies Of Sulfonated Polystyrene Ionomers. 1. Anomalous Saxs, William Macknight, Benjamin Chu, Dan Q. Wu, Robert D. Lundberg

Morphological studies of sulfonated polystyrenes by using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS)
and anomalous SAXS (ASAXS) are presented. ASAXS was used to study a model ionomer system: zinc
salts of sulfonated polystyrene (SPS). The results showed the presence of local clustering, as well as longrange
inhomogeneities of ions. The observed morphology could be attributed only to themetal ionicstructures,
as can be proven by means of ASAXS. However, with the SAXS patterns by SPS being much stronger than
those of polystyrene or SPS in acid form, the excess SAXS patterns of the metal ions can be measured with
greater precision by SAXS …

Fluorescent Molecular Probe Technique For Assessing The Interaction Between Sulfonated Polystyrene And Poly(Ethyl Acrylate-Co-4-Vinylpyridine) Ionomers In Tetrahydrofuran, William Macknight, Kirill N. Bakeev
William MacKnight
The interaction between sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) and poly(ethy1 acrylate-eo-4-vinylpyridine)
(EtAc4VP) ionomers was investigated over a wide range of concentrations in the nonpolar solvent,
tetrahydrofuran (THF), using a fluorescent molecular probe technique. The acid-base interaction between
the sulfonate groups of SPS and the pyridine groups of EtAcVP and the miscibility of these ionomers are
evident for pyridine contents of 7.8 and 4.5 mol 5% in EtAc4VP and are not detectable for EtAc4VP with
1.7 mol % pyridine groups. Concentration-dependent excimer fluorescence from SPS and EtAc4VP mixtures
indicates the occurrence of polar interactions as a result of proton transfer from the styrenesulfonic …

Available Ionomers, William Macknight

A number of commercially available ionomers are discussed. These include Surlyns, Nafions, and Thermoplastic Elastomers based on sulfonated rubbery backbones. In addition, a number of experimental ionomers described in the literature are examined, including those with semi-crystalline, elastomeric, and plastic backbones. Finally, the synthesis and some properties of a new class of end-functionalized ionomers, known as halato-telechelics are described. It is postulated that the properties of all these various classes of ionomers can be understood on the basis of a morphological model in which the salt groups aggregate to form physical crosslinks and microphase separated ionic clusters.

Two perfluorocarboxylate ionomers of different ion-exchange capacities (IEC) of 1.25 and 1.80 mequiv /g were studied to determine their dynamic mechanical behavior, water uptake, and rates of neutralization. These polymers consist of a fluorocarbon backbone containing short side chains on the end of which the carboxylate functionality resides. They are quite similar in many ways to the more familiar perfluorosulfonate ionomers that have been studied extensively. Methyl esters, free acids, and sodium, potassium, cesium, silver, barium, magnesium, and tetrabutylammonium salts were examined. In the case of the 1.25 mequiv / g IEC resin, a two-phase morphology consisting of a fluorocarbon …

Theory of the effect of ion-pair clustering on chain dimensions was compared with mean-square radii of gyration determined on poly(styrenesulfonic acid) ionomers by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Reasonable agreement between theory and experiment was obtained by setting the surface energy of cluster formation (the only arbitrary parameter) equal to 8.9 kcal/mol of ion pairs. Since theory predicted more ion pairs per cluster than could be accommodated in spherical clusters, lamellar cluster formation was assumed. Theory predicted about 15 and 12 ion pairs per cluster for polymer containing 1.9 and 8.5 mol % ionic repeat units, respectively. The data suggest, however, …

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering From Polypentenamer Sulfonate Ionomers, William Macknight, T. R. Earnest Jr., Julia S. Higgins

The physical structure of polypent.enamer suHonat.e ionomers has been investigat.ed by small-angle neutron scatt.ering (SANS) and small-angle X-ray scatt.ering (SAXS). For a 17% cesium salt, a SAXS peak is observed in the dry stat.e at a value of the scatt.ering vector Q = 0.18, but this ionomer peak is undet.ectable by SANS. The addition of several wat.er molecules per salt group affords adequat.e neutron scatt.ering contrast to identify a scatt.ering maximum corresponding to the X-ray peak. SANS maxima are also observed in swollen 5.8% and 12% polypent.enamer ionomers as well as in hydrogenated ionomers. Higher wat.er cont.ents appear to effect …

Poly(Alkylene Oxide) Ionomers Ii: Solution Co- And Terpolymerization Of Trioxane For The Preparation Of Polyoxymethylene Ionomers, William Macknight, L. Demejo, Otto Vogl

Solution polymerization of trioxane (TO) with l,3-dioxolane {DO) gave copolymers of various comonomer compositions. TO was also copolymerized with ethyl glycidate (EG) and terpolymerized with DO and EG to polymers of low EG content. The copolymers were acetate endcapped or base treated to give stable co- and terpolymers. The treatment of EG containing polyoxymethylene (POM) copolymers with sodium hydroxide in methanol at elevated temperatures gave POM ionomers. The polymers were characterized by their infrared and PMR spectra for their general structure and co-and terpolymer composition. POM copolymers with only EG as comonomer showed low base stability but those which contained …

The nature of the distribution of ionic groups in cesium salts of ethylene-methacrylic acid and ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers containing 2.1 to 6.3 mo!% acid was examined using the smallangle and wide-angle x-ray scattering techniques. The low-angle data containing a maximum characteristic of these materials were analyzed according to principles of small-angle scattering theory. The radial distribution functions for a typical salt and unionized copolymer were derived from the combined small- and wide-angle data. The results of these two approaches indicate the presence of ionic clusters of the ori:ler of 10-20 A in size. There is evidence that these clusters are …
